Chapter 22 - Intrigue

Kai took Jean to play goldfish scooping at a street stall.

This was a classic entertainment activity at the Mondstadt celebration.

A large number of goldfish were placed in a transparent glass pool, and one needed to use a flat net, no bigger than a child's palm, to scoop them up.

Each attempt only costs ten Mora.

Although it seemed simple, in fact, whenever the goldfish scooping net entered the water, the goldfish would flee at their fastest speed.

Even if one managed to scoop them into the net, they would often flip back into the water as soon as they left the surface.

Therefore, successfully scooping goldfish still required some skill.

Clearly, Jean's goldfish scooping skills were quite poor.

After sitting at the goldfish stall for a full half an hour, Jean's sleeves were completely soaked, and her face and hair tips were covered in water droplets, making her look a bit disheveled.

But from the empty small fish tank beside her, it was clear that she had not caught a single one so far.

Kai sat beside her, resting his chin on one hand, observing his wife's cautious expression.

As a goldfish that had finally been netted leaped back into the water, Jean's hopeful face was instantly replaced by disappointment.

She was like any ordinary girl on the street, pouting in annoyance, even wanting to overturn the stall.

"Again... just one more time."

She huffily put down the small fish net.

Jean turned around, looking at Kai with a hint of defiance.

She looked very cute.

When she noticed the slight curve of his lips, she immediately grumbled in dissatisfaction, "It's just bad luck, is it that funny?"

"No, I just think my wife is too cute."

Kai could have held back before, but hearing Jean say that, he immediately couldn't resist, and a smile appeared on his face.

He then used his sleeve to wipe the water from her face, before taking out a hundred-Mora coin and handing it to the owner.

"Let's play ten more times."

"I can catch one in a single try, why waste money?"

Seeing that Kai didn't seem to trust her skills much, Jean waved the small fish net in her hand provocatively, unwilling to admit defeat.

"You said the same thing fifteen minutes ago."

Kai just scratched his head and chuckled.

"This time for sure!"

Jean lightly coughed twice, holding the small fish net, and continued to seriously stare at the goldfish in the tank.

Kai continued to tilt his head and observe his wife, feeling a little content.

He, of course, understood the tricks of such stalls.

To put it plainly, it was just leveraging the customers' competitive spirit.

Scooping goldfish for ten Mora a time didn't seem expensive, but in fact, because it was generally difficult to scoop up the goldfish, people often ended up paying a lot of Mora unknowingly.

Overall, the merchants would definitely not lose money.

However, even though he knew the secret, Kai didn't mind spending this small amount.

After all, if he could see his usually very serious wife show such a cute side, no matter how he thought about it, it seemed like a worthwhile trade.

"Hmm?"

Just then, a strange sensation suddenly emerged from behind him.

It was the feeling of being watched.

Although not particularly strong, it still made Kai instinctively glance back.

What appeared before his eyes was only the seemingly bustling street.

As for the gaze that had been on him, it immediately vanished.

"Strange."

Kai frowned in confusion.

However, after a moment's thought, he refocused his gaze on Jean.

He didn't pay too much attention to it.

After all, in Mondstadt, many people knew him and Jean.

Perhaps someone had just happened to see Jean playing a street game like goldfish scooping and was surprised, so they couldn't help but take a second look.

"My wife is still prettier."

Continuing to observe Jean's cautious profile as she scooped goldfish, Kai couldn't help but think this thought.

Goth Grand Hotel... A figure cloaked in black robes took elegant steps, entering the hotel lobby accompanied by two Debt Collectors.

Facing this unseen figure, the hotel staff all showed puzzled looks.

Apparently, everyone was guessing the other's identity.

After all, based on the past few days' interactions, the people at the Goth Grand Hotel had some understanding of Snezhnaya's diplomatic delegation.

Generally speaking, even among the Fatui, Debt Collectors were considered extremely advanced mass-produced combatants.

In this situation, to be escorted by two Debt Collectors, it was clear that the black-robed individual was definitely a highly esteemed figure.

Perhaps... a high-ranking Fatui diplomat?

"Tap, tap~"

Under the puzzled gaze of the hotel staff, the black-robed figure slowly ascended the stairs and entered the area under Fatui control.

After Snezhnaya's diplomatic delegation booked the entire Goth Grand Hotel, except for the lobby which still required hotel staff to maintain, all other areas had entered the Fatui's security perimeter.

It could be said that from this point onwards, it was essentially entering Fatui territory.

"Madam, you seemed very interested in Mondstadt's celebration activities just now?"

Respectfully taking the black robe, a Debt Collector asked with a hint of confusion.

Upon entering Fatui territory, certain topics could be discussed without restraint.

"Celebration activities?"

"No... I'm just a little interested in the man next to the Favonius Acting Grand Master."

Walking elegantly through the hotel corridor, after shedding the black robe, what was revealed was a woman with a perfectly sculpted figure.

Her long, cream-colored hair was styled into a dignified updo, with the other end naturally falling over her shoulder.

Her pale purple eyes, with half her face obscured by a uniquely shaped mask, combined with her proud yet elegant tone, gave her an almost fierce demeanor.

Seeing someone approaching, the guards on duty vigilantly stared down the corridor.

But when they saw the figure appearing before them, their initial vigilance was immediately replaced by intense fear.

They all lowered their heads, not daring to look directly.

"That man?"

The Debt Collector showed a hint of confusion, recalling the scene on the street and having a vague impression.

"Are you referring to... the young man next to the Favonius Acting Grand Master?"

"Forgive me, Madam, but I think he seems to be just an ordinary person, perhaps a Knights of Favonius member, but not worth paying attention to."

"No, he needs to be paid attention to."

Stopping in front of Anastasia's suite, recalling the extremely vigilant look in the man's eyes she had seen on the street, the Madam raised her hand and pushed open the door.

"Investigate him."

"Give me the results by tomorrow morning."

"Yes!"

The two Debt Collectors received their orders.

Although they were somewhat puzzled, as subordinates, their duty was to obey.

Therefore, they responded without any hesitation, turned, and left the hotel.

"Who?"

Just then... Anastasia, still in her room, also noticed someone entering the suite and quickly came out of the room.

However, upon seeing the person, her initially wary expression almost immediately froze.

It was replaced by an indescribable fear, as if she had seen an irresistible presence.

Her face pale, she immediately knelt on the ground.

"Ma... Madam!"

"Anastasia, I heard that during yesterday's private negotiation... you were rendered speechless by an ordinary citizen of Mondstadt?"

The Madam walked over with elegant steps, casually closing the suite door, cutting off all sound from escaping.

"That's not how our Snezhnaya diplomats should behave, you know."

"Madam, please forgive me, next time I will definitely..."

"Ah ah ah!!"
