Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Red Torrent

The world didn't just turn red; it began to scream.

The siren wasn't a sound—it was a data-burst that bypassed Adam's ears and vibrated directly in his teeth. In the Scrapyard Sanctuary, the "Scraps" scrambled in a panic. The flickering welding torches died out, replaced by the ominous, rhythmic pulsing of the red emergency lights.

[EVENT: THE GREAT COLLECTION]

[Threat Level: HIGH]

[Enemy: Exterminator Squad 04 (Level 3-6)]

"They're here," Maya whispered, her brass mask hiss-venting steam as she loaded a jagged piece of rebar into a makeshift pneumatic launcher. "The Engine... it sold us out."

The ceiling of the cavern groaned. Suddenly, four massive steel harpoons crashed through the concrete, trailing thick, electrified cables. From the holes, figures descended. They weren't Drones, and they weren't Hunters. They were Exterminators—sleek, faceless soldiers in white ceramic armor, their movements synchronized like a single mind.

[Target Identified: Exterminator Alpha (Level 6)]

[Weaponry: Thermal Blades / Suppression Field]

Adam stood up from the Tinkerer's table, his legs still shaky. He looked at his arm. The silver line was glowing with a steady, calm light.

"The surgery..." Adam looked at the Tinkerer. "Did it work?"

"Try it, Glitch," the old man wheezed, his floating platform retreating into the shadows. "But remember: the more you shift, the less 'human' you keep."

An Exterminator landed five meters from Adam. Without a word, it ignited a thermal blade—a streak of orange plasma that hissed in the damp air. It moved with terrifying speed, a blur of white and orange.

[Incoming Attack: Thermal Slash]

[Warning: Physical Block Impossible]

Adam didn't try to block. He felt the silver line in his arm pulse.

"Gear-Shift Burst!"

Instead of a shockwave, the world around Adam seemed to skip a frame. For a fraction of a second, the gear in his hand turned in reverse.

Clink-Whirr.

Adam didn't just move; he "shifted" positions. To the Exterminator, it looked like Adam had teleported. The thermal blade slashed through empty air, hitting the metal surgery table and melting it instantly.

Adam appeared behind the soldier. He felt the kinetic energy stored from the "missed" hit—but this time, it was amplified by the surgery's tuning.

"My turn to shift the gears," Adam growled.

He slammed his palm into the Exterminator's back.

[Skill: Gear-Shift Burst - Released!]

[Output: 150% Kinetic Feedback]

BOOM.

The white armor didn't just crack; it imploded. The Exterminator was launched forward, crashing into a stack of server racks with enough force to shut down the lights in that sector.

[Exterminator Neutralized]

[Reward: +500 Credits / +1 Gear Fragment]

"Adam, watch out!" Maya's voice cut through the chaos.

Two more Exterminators were closing in on her, their thermal blades raised. She was firing her rebar launcher, but their shields were absorbing everything.

Adam looked at his hand. The silver line was turning a faint orange.

[Internal Heat: 40%]

[Warning: Overuse of Gear-Shift will cause 'Mechanical Fever']

"Focus, Adam," he whispered to himself. "Focus +1!"

With the hyper-clarity back, he saw the battlefield differently. He didn't see enemies; he saw "vectors." He saw the cables hanging from the ceiling. He saw the leaking steam pipes.

"Maya! Hit the pipe above them on three!"

"What?" she shouted, but she didn't hesitate. "One... two... THREE!"

Maya fired. The rebar pierced a high-pressure steam pipe. A blinding cloud of 300-degree steam erupted. The Exterminators' sensors went haywire, their red visors flickering.

Adam shifted again. Clink-Whirr.

He appeared in the middle of the steam cloud. He grabbed both soldiers by their helmets.

"Shift... DOWN!"

He forced the kinetic energy downward. The floor beneath them collapsed, sending the two Exterminators falling into the dark, churning depths of the Engine's cooling vats below.

Silence fell over the immediate area, broken only by the sound of Maya's heavy breathing.

[Current Status: Victory (Part 1)]

[Warning: Exterminator Alpha (Level 6) is still active]

Adam looked toward the center of the Sanctuary. The Tinkerer was gone. But standing there, bathed in the red light, was the leader of the squad.

The Alpha Exterminator didn't have a visor. It had a single, rotating lens that looked exactly like the one in Elias's office.

"Adam," the Alpha spoke, its voice coming from the station's speakers. "The Tinkerer didn't fix you. He just made you a better battery. Give us the Mystery Key, and we might leave the girl alive."

Adam reached into his pocket. He felt the cold, obsidian surface of the key. It was vibrating so hard it was burning his fingers.

"If you want it," Adam said, his eyes glowing with an unstable silver light. "Come and take it from the Glitch."
