Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Ghost in the Rain

09:59

09:58

The countdown didn't stop because he was grieving. It didn't pause because he had just killed a machine that used to be a neighbor. The System was a cold architect, and Adam was just a brick it was testing for strength.

He grabbed the [Mystery Key]—a heavy, jagged piece of obsidian-like glass—and shoved it into his pocket. He didn't look back at Mrs. Gable's remains. He couldn't. If he did, he'd break, and a broken vessel is a dead one.

He hit the fire escape, his sneakers clattering against the rusted iron. The night air was thick with the scent of rain and ozone.

[Warning: Hunter Signal Detected - Proximity: 500 Meters]

[Direction: North-East]

"Already?" Adam hissed.

He dropped the last three meters into the alleyway, his [+2 Agility] reward finally kicking in. He didn't land heavily; he rolled, his body absorbing the impact with a fluid grace that felt alien to him. He was becoming a predator, or at least, something that didn't want to be prey.

Then, the sky opened up. Cold, stinging rain began to pour, washing the sweat and oil from his face.

Buzz.

[Environmental Effect: Heavy Rain]

[Visibility: -30% / Footstep Sound: -50%]

[Advantage: Stealth / Disadvantage: Tracking Difficulty]

Adam sprinted. He didn't take the main roads. He knew the back alleys like the back of his hand—the shortcuts he used to take when he was too lazy to walk the long way. But now, those shortcuts were his lifeblood.

He reached the industrial district, a graveyard of rusted warehouses and flickering streetlights.

Suddenly, the hair on the back of his neck stood up.

[Skill Passive: Danger Sense (F-Rank) - Alert!]

[Direction: Above]

Adam didn't think. He dove behind a stack of wooden pallets.

THWIP.

A glowing blue bolt of energy hissed through the air exactly where his head had been a second ago. It hit a nearby dumpster, melting the metal like a hot knife through butter.

"Found you, little Glitch," a voice echoed through the rain. It wasn't mechanical like the Drone. It was human. Smooth. Arrogant.

A figure landed softly on top of a shipping container. He was lean, wearing a high-tech tactical coat that seemed to absorb the light around him. In his hand, he held a sleek, crystalline crossbow that pulsed with the same blue light as the bolt.

[Target Identified: Hunter "Vane"]

[Level: 4]

[Primary Weapon: Soul-Bolt Crossbow]

"Level 4?" Adam's heart hammered. "I just barely survived a Level 2 Drone!"

"Elias said you were a 'Special Evaluation'," Vane said, reloading his weapon with a practiced flick of his wrist. "But all I see is a terrified kid in a wet tracksuit. You're worth 500 credits, Adam. Don't make me work for it."

[Mission Update: Survive the Hunter]

[Condition: Reach the 'Dead Zone' in the Subway Station]

[Distance: 400 Meters]

"Only 400 meters," Adam whispered, his eyes darting around. "But there's no cover for the last fifty."

Vane fired again. Adam scrambled, the bolts exploding behind him, sending shards of wood and brick flying. He was fast, but Vane was a professional. The Hunter wasn't just shooting; he was herding Adam toward the open street.

"You're leaking, Adam!" Vane laughed, jumping from the container to a nearby fire escape with supernatural ease. "I can smell your Focus from here. It's like a lighthouse in the dark."

Adam realized the Energy Seal he bought was fading. The explosion in the apartment had cracked it. He was a beacon.

He reached the edge of the industrial lot. The subway entrance was across the street, glowing with a dim, flickering light.

Fifty meters of open ground.

"If I run, I'm a target. If I stay, I'm a corpse."

Adam looked at his [Mystery Key]. It was vibrating in his pocket, growing warmer against his thigh. He looked at his [Counter-Burst] skill.

Wait. The rain.

Adam looked at the puddles forming on the asphalt. A desperate, insane plan formed in his mind.

"System! Can I channel Counter-Burst through water?"

[Processing...]

[Theoretical Probability: 14% / Risk: Severe Electrical Backlash]

"I'll take those odds," Adam growled.

He didn't run for the subway. He ran straight into the middle of the street, into the deepest part of the rain.

Vane landed on the sidewalk, his crossbow leveled at Adam's chest. "Suicide? Bold choice. I'll make it quick."

Vane pulled the trigger. The Bolt—a massive spear of blue energy—roared through the air.

Adam didn't dodge. He stood his ground. He reached out with his smoldering right hand and caught the bolt.

CRACK-BOOM!

The explosion was blinding. The electricity arched through the rainwater, turning the entire street into a shimmering web of blue light.

[Health: 15% - CRITICAL!]

[Counter-Burst (Rank E) - OVERLOADED!]

Adam's body felt like it was being torn apart from the inside. But the kinetic energy wasn't just in his hand anymore. It was everywhere. He was the center of a storm.

"My turn," Adam hissed, his eyes glowing with an unstable, flickering white light.

He slammed his palms into the flooded asphalt.

The energy didn't fly at Vane. It traveled through the water. A massive wave of kinetic force and electricity raced across the street like a tidal wave.

Vane's eyes widened. "What the—"

He tried to jump, but the wet pavement beneath him erupted. The shockwave hit him full force, shattering his tactical coat's shields and throwing him backward through the glass window of a storefront.

[Hunter Stunned: 60 Seconds]

[User Status: Exhausted]

Adam didn't wait to see if he was dead. He dragged his numb, scorched body toward the subway stairs. He collapsed down the steps, disappearing into the darkness of the tunnels just as the timer hit zero.

[Safe Zone Entered: The Under-World]

[The Collection: Night 1 - Survived]

Adam lay on the dirty tiles of the subway floor, the sound of dripping water the only thing he could hear. He had survived. But as he looked at his hand, he saw the skin hadn't just burned.

A small, metallic gear was starting to form under his skin.
