Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 - The Fox in the Dark

The light thinned.

 The air grew heavier.

Foxy pressed flat against Qalish's shoulder, completely still.

 We're close.

 The system confirmed it.

[Dark Element Resonance: Increasing]

[Approaching source location]

Then—

 They arrived.

---

A small clearing.

Surrounded by dark-barked trees, their branches twisted inward as if sheltering something.

The ground beneath was soft. Darker than the rest of the forest floor.

 And at the center—

 A monster.

Qalish activated Monster Analysis before he even took another step.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Species: Dusk Shade Fox

Level: 5

Rank: D

Type: Beast / Spirit

Element: Dark / Minor Fire

[Inverse mutation — mirrored element composition to contracted Monster]

 Skills:

Shadow Veil — concealment aura, drastically reduces detectability

Phantom Step — high-speed illusory movement, leaves false images

Dark Pulse — area burst of concentrated dark energy

Ember Fang — fire-infused bite, minor burn on contact

Weakness: Disrupted concentration breaks Shadow Veil, Dual-element resonance disrupts Phantom Step accuracy, Sustained pressure prevents skill.

Behavior Note: Territorial. Currently observing. Drawn to dual-element resonance.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Qalish exhaled slowly.

 So that's what you are.

 It was a fox.

Larger than Foxy. Leaner. Its fur was deep charcoal — almost black — with faint embers flickering along its tail like dying sparks.

 Its eyes were burning amber.

And they were fixed on Foxy.

Not on Qalish. Not on Aiden or Ailyn.

 Just Foxy.

Foxy had gone completely rigid on his shoulder. Her breathing was shallow. But she hadn't looked away either.

 It's the inverse of her,

She's Fire with Minor Dark. It's Dark with Minor Fire.

Two sides of the same mutation.

That's why it noticed her.

That's why it's been waiting.

He glanced toward the edge of the clearing.

The boundary line sat just behind them — a faint shimmer in the air. The zone marker. Level 1–3 designated area only.

 This creature was Level 5.

It couldn't cross that line without triggering the academy's detection system. The instructors would sense it immediately. And if it stepped over — it would be killed on sight.

Which means it's been staying here deliberately.

Waiting inside its own territory.

Waiting for something to come to it.

Qalish's gaze moved back to Foxy.

 Waiting for her.

"What is it?" Aiden asked quietly.

"Fox type. Level 5. D Rank."

 Silence.

"...D Rank," Aiden repeated slowly. "That's two full ranks above Foxy."

 "Yes."

"And we only just hit Level 3."

 "Yes."

 "And we're still fighting it."

 "Yes."

Aiden stared at the creature. The creature glanced at Aiden briefly. Then looked back at Foxy.

 Aiden slowly turned to Qalish.

 "I really hate this plan."

 "I know."

 "...Let's go."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Ailyn — ranged support only. Do not close in under any circumstance."

Qalish kept his voice low. Controlled.

"Aiden — apply left pressure. Your job is to prevent it from circling. Don't chase, don't overextend."

 He looked at Foxy.

She was already on the ground. She had dropped from his shoulder on her own. Standing at the center of the clearing. Facing the Dusk Shade Fox directly.

 "Foxy and I take point."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Dusk Shade Fox didn't move immediately.

It watched them spread into position. Patient. Unhurried. Like it had done this before.

Then—

 Shadow Veil.

Its outline blurred. The ember sparks along its tail dimmed and vanished.

 It simply... disappeared.

 Ailyn's breath caught sharply.

 "I can't see it—"

"Don't try to look," Qalish said immediately. "Foxy—"

Foxy's eyes had already narrowed to slits.

She could still feel it. The resonance between them — dark touching dark, fire answering fire.

It hadn't gone anywhere. It was just hidden.

 There—

 "Left side—!"

Shadow Bite!

Foxy lunged — and connected.

The Dusk Shade Fox snapped back into visibility, a dark gash torn across its right flank.

It let out a sharp, low sound.

 Not pain.

 Surprise.

It hadn't expected to be tracked through the veil.

 Qalish's eyes sharpened.

Good. Foxy is the counter. She can sense it even concealed.

As long as she's at the front — the Shadow Veil is useless.

 "Push it! Aiden — now!"

 Steel Bite!

Rex charged hard from the left. The Dusk Shade Fox pivoted — faster than Rex could track—

 Phantom Step.

Three afterimages exploded outward in different directions. Rex bit through the nearest one.

 Nothing.

 An illusion.

The real fox was already gone.

 "Where—"

It reappeared behind Aiden.

 Close. Too close.

 "AIDEN—!"

 Dark Pulse.

The burst detonated at point blank range.

Rex reacted on instinct — Iron Body activating — throwing himself between Aiden and the blast.

He absorbed the core of it.

 But the shockwave—

 The shockwave was unavoidable.

It caught Aiden from the side and threw him clean off his feet.

He hit the base of a large tree. The impact was sharp and heavy. The crack of it echoed through the clearing.

 Silence.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 "...Aiden."

Ailyn's voice. Barely above a whisper.

Aiden was on the ground. One arm pressed hard against his ribs. The other braced against the tree trunk, trying to push himself up.

Rex stood over him immediately — low stance, growling — shielding him from any follow-up.

Aiden's face was pale. Tight with pain.

He tried to stand. His legs didn't cooperate.

He exhaled through his teeth instead.

 "...I'm okay."

 He wasn't.

Qalish could see it from across the clearing.

Cracked ribs. Maybe worse. He's out.

The Dusk Shade Fox had already turned away from Aiden.

Its amber eyes swept back to the center of the clearing. Back to Foxy.

It didn't look at Aiden again.

He wasn't a threat anymore. It knew.

Foxy stepped forward. One slow, deliberate step. Placing herself fully between Qalish and the Dusk Shade Fox.

 Her platinum white fur bristled.

The faint dark within her eyes—

 Deepened. Darkened. Burned.

 Qalish stared.

Something was happening. Not a skill. Not an attack. Something from inside her. From the Crystal.

 His system flickered—

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Evolution Aura: 96% → 100%]

[EA threshold reached]

[Evolution conditions partially met]

[Note: Remaining 4% fulfilled via Dark Element proximity resonance]

[High-density dark aura detected — natural absorption triggered]

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Qalish's eyes widened.

 The Dusk Shade Fox's aura...

If the density is high enough...

It might count.

But then—

 A pulse.

Deeper than anything he had felt before.

The Crystal in his Inner Space flared. Something shifted inside it. Expanded.

---

Aiden was still down.

And the fight was not over.

 He reached inward.

 Flame Heal.

The warmth came — familiar, steady—

The warmth didn't stop at Qalish.

 It spread.

A faint ember glow trailed outward — drifting across the clearing like slow-moving sparks. It reached Aiden. Settled around him.

Aiden blinked. Looked down at his arm.

 The pain was still there.

But it was... moving. Receding. Slowly. Not gone — but less.

He looked up at Qalish with an expression caught somewhere between confusion and relief.

 "...What was that?"

 Qalish didn't answer.

His eyes were already back on the Dusk Shade Fox.

It stood motionless at the center of the clearing. Amber eyes burning. Watching Foxy. Waiting.

The calculation panel was still running in the corner of his vision.

The forest had gone completely silent.

 Qalish steadied his breathing.

Aiden is down but stabilizing.

Ailyn is holding position.

And Foxy...

He looked at her.

 She stood completely still.

But the air around her had changed. That faint glow along her fur — the one he had barely noticed before — was visible now. Growing. Like something inside her was finally ready to come out.

 Foxy glanced back at him.

 Just once.

Those blue eyes — with the shadow burning deeper and brighter than he had ever seen.

D Skill...

Not F. Not E.

No wonder Shadow Bite hits harder than anything else at this rank.

Her skill tier is two full ranks above her body rank.

Because she's a mutation.

Dual element from birth — her skills followed.

Fast. Strong. Far beyond what anyone would expect looking at her.

Just like her.

Qalish exhaled.

 Slow. Quiet.

 "Foxy."

She turned back to face the Dusk Shade Fox.

 Her stance lowered.

 Ready.

 "Let's finish this."
