Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: A Name in This World

Morning arrived quietly, but unlike the previous days, Ayan did not wake with confusion or hesitation. His eyes opened slowly, and for a brief moment, he simply stared at the wooden ceiling above him, letting his thoughts settle into place. The events of the past days no longer felt distant or unreal. The pain in his shoulder had dulled slightly, but it remained present enough to remind him that everything he had experienced was real. This world was not something he could treat like a game anymore, and whatever came next would depend entirely on how he chose to move forward.

He sat up slowly, careful with his movements as his body adjusted. The room was quiet, the faint light of morning slipping through the window and illuminating the simple surroundings. Aelira was already awake, standing near the window just as she always did. Her figure was still, her long pale hair falling naturally down her back, catching the soft light in a way that made it seem almost silver. There was something about her presence that felt unchanged no matter what happened around them. Calm, steady, and always aware.

Ayan exhaled quietly and stood up, his gaze drifting toward the small wooden basin near the corner of the room. Clear water rested inside it, undisturbed. He stepped closer without thinking and looked down.

For a moment, he didn't react.

Then his eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Right."

The face reflected in the water was his, but not entirely. The structure was familiar, yet sharper, more defined. His features looked cleaner, more refined, as if someone had taken his original appearance and perfected it. His eyes seemed slightly deeper, more focused than he remembered, and his overall build, even just from what he could see, appeared leaner, more balanced. It wasn't a drastic change, but it was enough to feel different.

"This is… my character's body."

The realization settled naturally now.

It made sense.

This was the world of the game.

So of course—

He wasn't the same as before.

Ayan straightened slowly, his gaze lingering on his reflection for just a moment longer before turning away. There was no point thinking about it too much. This was who he was now, whether he liked it or not.

Behind him, Aelira spoke softly, her voice as calm as ever as she asked if he was thinking about himself again. Ayan glanced at her briefly before responding that he was just getting used to things. She didn't press further, but her eyes lingered on him for a moment longer than necessary, as if she was observing something he couldn't see.

They stepped outside together.

The village was already awake.

People moved along the dirt paths, their routines continuing as usual, but there was a noticeable shift in the atmosphere. Conversations were quieter, more focused, and there was a tension beneath it all that hadn't been there before. Ayan noticed it immediately.

As he walked further in, a few villagers turned toward him.

"Morning, Aion."

The voice came naturally, without hesitation.

Ayan paused for a fraction of a second before nodding back. "…Morning."

The name didn't feel strange.

That was what surprised him the most.

There was no confusion, no need to question it. The moment he heard it, it felt familiar, as if it had always been his name here.

Aion.

That was who he was in this world.

Another villager approached, giving him a brief look before glancing toward Aelira as well. "You two heard about it yet?"

Ayan frowned slightly. "…About what?"

The man crossed his arms, his expression serious. "The monsters. They're acting strange. Not just one or two—more people are reporting it now."

Ayan's gaze sharpened slightly.

"…More?"

The man nodded. "Yeah. Something's off. It's not normal behavior."

Another voice joined in from nearby, saying that they couldn't just ignore it anymore and that if things continued like this, the entire area would become dangerous. The conversation began to grow, more villagers joining in, each adding fragments of information.

Ayan listened carefully.

"…So what are you going to do?" he asked.

One of the older villagers answered, his voice steady despite the tension. "We're sending a group to the city."

Ayan's eyes narrowed slightly.

"The city?"

The man nodded. "This isn't something we can handle alone. We need to report it. If this keeps spreading, it won't just be our village that's affected."

Another villager added that once the report reached the city, the Sanctum Order would likely get involved. At that name, the atmosphere shifted slightly again.

Ayan noticed it.

"…Sanctum Order?"

The older man looked at him, slightly surprised. "You've heard of them, haven't you?"

Ayan hesitated for a brief moment before nodding lightly. "…I've heard the name."

"They deal with things like this," the man explained. "Abnormal monsters, dangerous situations, anything that threatens balance. If something's wrong, they'll investigate it."

Ayan remained silent, processing the information.

So there was a larger structure.

A system beyond just villages.

And if something was truly wrong with this world—

They would be involved.

His thoughts shifted quickly.

If he wanted answers…

If he wanted to understand what was happening—

Then staying here wouldn't be enough.

"…When are you leaving?" he asked.

"Soon," the man replied. "Within a day or two. We need to prepare first."

Ayan nodded slowly.

That was sooner than he expected.

His gaze shifted briefly toward Aelira, who had been standing quietly beside him the entire time. She hadn't spoken, but her eyes remained fixed on him, as if she was already aware of what he was thinking.

"You're going."

Her voice was soft.

Not a question.

A statement.

Ayan didn't deny it.

"…Yeah."

The answer came naturally.

"If there's something going on, I need to know what it is."

Aelira didn't respond immediately.

She simply looked at him.

Then—

"…Then I'll come with you."

The words were quiet.

But certain.

Ayan let out a small breath.

"…I figured you would."

There was no point arguing it.

Not anymore.

He turned his gaze back toward the villagers, who were still discussing preparations, their voices low but determined.

For the first time since arriving in this world, Ayan felt like he had a direction.

Not just survival.

Not just reacting.

But moving forward.

Toward something.

And whatever was waiting in that city—

It would be his next step.
