Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Checkmate

Chapter 15: Checkmate.

The dust in the fourth-floor weapon room was thick, catching the afternoon light filtering through the shattered window. The chaotic noise of battle had been entirely replaced by a breathless, heavy silence.

Mina Ashido broke first. Abandoning her defensive stance, she rushed across the ruined floorboards toward the unconscious form of Eijiro Kirishima.

"Kirishima! Hey, are you okay?!" she cried out, dropping to her knees beside him. She hovered her hands over his chest, terrified of hurting him further. His hardened skin had completely receded, leaving him bruised and covered in gray concrete powder, but his chest rose and fell in a steady, albeit deep, rhythm.

Across the room, Hanta Sero was sweating profusely. His heart hammered against his ribs as his gaze darted frantically between the gaping hole in the floor and the shadowy avian figure standing by the window.

Tokoyami remained perfectly still, his arms crossed, his red eyes observing the panic with calm detachment. Dark Shadow loomed over his shoulder, its yellow eyes narrowing at Sero.

"It's not the end of the game!" Sero yelled, aiming both of his elbows directly at Tokoyami. He prepared to unleash a massive barrage of tape to bind the bird-headed student. "You're not getting past me to touch that weapon!"

Tokoyami simply closed his eyes. "I do not need to."

Before Sero could process the cryptic response, a sharp, metallic clink resonated from the dark crater in the center of the room.

Sero's eyes snapped downward just in time to see a flash of silver.

A heavy, gleaming chain erupted from the shadows of the third floor. It didn't aim for Sero, nor did it target Ashido. Moving with the fluid, guided precision of a living serpent, the chain shot straight up through the jagged hole, arced beautifully over the remaining students' heads, and slammed directly against the metallic surface of the fake nuclear warhead.

The silver links quickly coiled around the massive cylinder, pulling taut with a quiet, undeniable finality.

From the darkness of the floor below, a calm, even voice drifted upward, cutting through the tension like a blade.

"Checkmate."

A loud, piercing buzzer immediately echoed throughout the entire simulated city.

"THE HERO TEAM... WINS!" All Might's voice boomed over the intercom. The Number One Hero sounded distinctly out of breath, as if he too had forgotten to exhale during the final moments of the clash.

The instant the buzzer sounded, the suffocating, heavy pressure that had saturated the building vanished entirely. It was as if a heavy storm cloud had instantly cleared, leaving behind a quiet spring afternoon.

Kirishima slammed his hand against the ground as he tried to get up near Ashido, while a faint look of frustration appeared on Sero's face.

The silver chain wrapped around the warhead dissolved into a shower of faint, glowing sparks before fading into thin air.

A moment later, quiet footsteps echoed in the stairwell. Kurapika walked onto the fourth floor, stepping casually through the doorway Sero had tried to barricade earlier. The terrifying, cold-blooded hunter who had systematically dismantled their defense was gone. In his place stood a polite, mild-mannered boy in a dusty tracksuit.

Kurapika stopped a respectful distance away. He offered a small, deeply apologetic bow to the villain team.

"I'm sorry if I crossed the line," Kurapika said softly, his gray eyes clear and devoid of any hostility. He knelt beside the crater, looking at Kirishima.

He extended his hand with a warm smile to the warrior trying to stand before him and said, "That was a good fight."

Kirishima looked at him for a moment, then smiled, took his hand to stand, and said, "Yeah… you're seriously amazing!"

Sero let his arms drop, letting out a long, exhausted sigh as he slumped against the wall. "Man... you completely played us. We were so busy looking at the stairs and the window, we didn't even think about the floor."

"Separating you from Kirishima was the key to victory," Kurapika replied reasonably, standing back up. He turned his attention to his partner by the window. "Your timing was impeccable, Tokoyami. Your assault drew their focus exactly when I needed to cross the open corridor below."

Tokoyami offered a respectful nod, allowing Dark Shadow to retreat fully into his cloak. "It's nothing compared to you—you did amazing."

Ten minutes later, the class was gathered once again in the monitor room.

Kirishima was rubbing the back of his neck, laughing sheepishly while Kaminari and Mineta bombarded him with questions about what it felt like to fly. Kurapika stood quietly in his usual spot near the back, his posture relaxed, listening to the number one hero.

"An incredibly swift and decisive conclusion!" All Might announced, beaming at the students. "Now, who can give me a thorough breakdown of this match? Who is the MVP, and how did the Hero Team secure their victory?"

Momo Yaoyorozu immediately raised her hand.

"Go ahead, Young Yaoyorozu!"

"The MVP of this match is undoubtedly Kurapika," Yaoyorozu stated clearly, turning slightly to acknowledge the blonde boy. "However, the victory was the result of a perfectly executed, asymmetrical pincer movement."

She gestured toward the frozen image on the main screen, showing the exterior of the building. "The Hero Team recognized they were at a numerical disadvantage. A frontal assault up the stairs would have resulted in a bottleneck against Kirishima's defense and Ashido's acid. So, they divided the Villains' attention. Tokoyami utilized Dark Shadow to scale the exterior of the building, using the deep shadows cast by the adjacent structures to mask his rapid ascent to the fourth-floor window."

"Spot on!" All Might praised, nodding enthusiastically. "And what of the indoor infiltration?"

"Tokoyami acted as the highly visible, high-threat distraction," Yaoyorozu continued, her analytical mind piecing the tactical puzzle together. "By breaching the window, he forced the Villains to panic and commit their ranged fighters—Ashido and Sero—to the perimeter. This prompted Kirishima to leave the objective room to intercept what he believed was a secondary threat on the stairs."

Yaoyorozu paused, her eyes shifting to the crater in the floor.

"Kurapika capitalized on that division. He suppressed his presence entirely, making no sound as he ascended. When confronted by Kirishima, he didn't engage in a drawn-out brawl. He used the exact amount of localized force necessary to neutralize the heaviest obstacle, while simultaneously creating a direct, vertical line of sight to the objective. Once the floor was breached, he bypassed the remaining defenders entirely by materializing his chain through the floorboards to touch the weapon. It was an absolute, strategic checkmate."

The class murmured in agreement, looking at Kurapika with a newfound, deeply ingrained respect. He hadn't just beaten the villains with raw power; he had outsmarted them on every conceivable level.

"Excellent analysis, Young Yaoyorozu!" All Might cheered, giving a massive thumbs-up. "Heroism isn't just about punching the hardest! It's about situational awareness, teamwork, and minimizing unnecessary conflict to secure the safety of the public—or in this case, the payload!"

All Might looked toward the back of the room, his sharp blue eyes meeting Kurapika's calm gray ones.

"You displayed remarkable restraint and tactical brilliance today, Young Kurapika. Welcome to U.A. High."

Kurapika simply lowered his head in a quiet, respectful bow.

But while his head was lowered, none of the students could see his gray eyes—empty for a brief moment, as if they had drifted somewhere else.

In that moment, Kurapika whispered only one thing in his mind. This is not enough…
