Chapter 18 - Ch. 18 First Dungeon III.

‎The faint murmuring from deeper within the cavern did not fade this time. Instead, it multiplied. Low guttural sounds bounced off the stone walls, overlapping into an unsettling chorus of rough breathing and throat-clicking noises. Kaito's grip tightened around the spear as he slowly shifted his footing, angling his body toward the tunnel ahead. The earlier silence had been deceptive. He could feel it now—the dungeon wasn't empty. The first goblin had not been alone.

‎A wet sound followed the murmuring.

‎Squelch… squelch…

‎Then another.

‎Tap… scrape… skrrt…

‎Two different sounds.

‎Two different creatures.

‎His jaw tightened slightly.

‎From the darkness ahead, movement appeared. One shape slid forward first, wobbling unevenly into the faint glow of the crystals. The familiar semi-transparent body of a slime emerged, its gelatinous mass pulsing slowly as its dark inner core flickered like a dim heartbeat. Sticky residue trailed behind it as it dragged itself closer.

‎But it wasn't alone.

‎A second figure stepped out behind it.

‎Another goblin.

‎Then a third.

‎Their yellow eyes gleamed in the dim light, reflecting faintly like those of wild animals. One carried a crude wooden club—nothing more than a jagged branch, but heavy enough to break bone if swung properly. The other bared its claws, lips curled back into a feral grin as saliva dripped from its uneven teeth.

‎A low, throaty howl echoed from one of them.

‎"Grrrraaaakh…"

‎Kaito exhaled slowly through his nose, forcing his mind to steady. One slime had been manageable. One goblin had been dangerous but controllable. But multiple enemies at once—that changed everything.

‎The slime lunged first.

‎Its body compressed inward before springing forward, stretching like elastic as it hurled itself toward his chest. At the same time, the goblin with the club rushed from the side, attempting to flank him rather than attack head-on.

‎They were coordinating.

‎That realization sent a sharp pulse of tension through his chest.

‎Kaito reacted instantly, stepping backward while twisting his body to the side. The slime slammed into the ground just inches from his leg, splattering outward before reforming into its original shape. A faint sizzling sound followed, and he caught sight of the stone darkening again where the slime had landed.

‎Acid.

‎Still dangerous.

‎Before he could reposition fully, the goblin with the club swung.

‎The attack came fast—far faster than he expected. The crude weapon cut through the air with a heavy whistling sound aimed directly at his shoulder.

‎Kaito barely raised the spear in time.

‎CRACK!

‎The wooden club smashed against the metal shaft, sending a violent vibration through his arms. Pain shot through his wrists from the force, nearly knocking the weapon loose from his grip. He staggered sideways, boots scraping loudly against the stone as he struggled to maintain balance.

‎The second goblin seized the opening.

‎It lunged forward with a shriek, claws reaching for his torso.

‎Kaito reacted on instinct. He twisted his body sharply, letting the claws graze across his side instead of striking cleanly. Even with the armor set absorbing most of the damage, he still felt the sting as the impact pushed him backward.

‎A sharp breath escaped his mouth.

‎That had been close.

‎Too close.

‎He didn't have time to recover.

‎The slime lunged again from the ground, stretching upward toward his leg.

‎Kaito forced himself to move despite the strain in his arms. He planted his foot and thrust the spear downward, aiming for the slime's core before it could make contact.

‎Thrust!

‎The metal tip pierced through the gelatinous mass, striking the dark center with a wet popping sound. The slime convulsed violently before collapsing into a lifeless puddle that spread across the floor.

‎But he couldn't celebrate.

‎The goblins were already closing in.

‎One of them swung the club again, this time aiming for his head.

‎Kaito ducked low, feeling the rush of air pass just above his hair as the weapon missed by inches. The force of the swing caused the goblin to stumble forward slightly, creating a narrow opening.

‎He took it.

‎With a sharp pivot of his hips, Kaito drove the spear upward into the goblin's abdomen.

‎The tip pierced deep.

‎"GRAAAAK!!"

‎The creature shrieked in pain, dropping the club as dark blood spilled across the stone floor. Its claws flailed wildly, striking at the shaft in a desperate attempt to free itself.

‎Kaito yanked the spear back violently, ripping the blade free and sending the goblin collapsing onto its knees.

‎Before he could finish it—

‎Pain exploded along his shoulder.

‎The second goblin had reached him.

‎Its claws tore across the side of his armor, the impact strong enough to spin his body slightly off balance. Even with the reinforced fabric, the force rattled his bones and knocked the air from his lungs.

‎He stumbled.

‎For the first time since entering the dungeon—

‎He nearly fell.

‎The goblin seized the moment, launching itself forward with a savage howl, aiming directly for his throat.

‎Kaito's heart pounded violently as adrenaline surged through his veins. His vision sharpened, focusing entirely on the creature's incoming attack. Instead of retreating, he stepped forward at the last second, twisting his body sideways while driving the spear forward with everything he had left.

‎The metal tip struck cleanly into the goblin's chest.

‎The impact halted its charge instantly.

‎Its claws stopped just inches from his neck.

‎For a brief moment, the two remained locked in place, the goblin trembling violently as blood bubbled from its mouth. Its yellow eyes widened in shock, rage slowly fading into emptiness.

‎Then its strength gave out.

‎The body collapsed forward before sliding off the spear and crashing onto the stone floor beside the first goblin.

‎Silence returned to the cavern once more.

‎But this time—

‎Kaito didn't feel victorious.

‎His breathing was heavy now, chest rising and falling rapidly as pain pulsed through his shoulder and side. His arms trembled slightly from the repeated impacts, and the lingering sting where the claws had struck reminded him just how close he had come to losing control of the fight.

‎That had not been easy.

‎Not even close.

‎He tightened his grip around the spear again, forcing his body to steady despite the pain. The dungeon was already proving something important—strength alone wasn't enough. One mistake, one slow reaction, and he would have been torn apart.

‎Then—

‎From deeper within the cavern—

‎A longer howl echoed.

‎Not from one goblin.

‎From many.

‎"GRAAAAK… GRAAAAK… GRRRRAAAAH…"

‎Kaito's eyes narrowed sharply as he turned toward the darkness ahead.

‎That sound wasn't random.

‎It was a call.

‎And somewhere beyond the shadows—

‎More were coming.

‎The echo of multiple howls rolled through the cavern, bouncing violently off the stone walls until it became impossible to tell how many creatures were coming. Kaito stood still for a moment, chest rising and falling heavily as the pain in his shoulder throbbed with every breath. The sting from the goblin's claws hadn't faded, and the constant tension in his arms made it harder to keep the spear steady.

‎More footsteps approached.

‎That realization settled heavily in his mind.

‎If he faced them like this—injured, tired, and already strained—he wouldn't last long.

‎His eyes flickered briefly toward the system storage.

‎Healing Herbs.

‎He still had them.

‎Without wasting another second, Kaito reached into his storage and pulled out a small bundle of rough green leaves. The herbs smelled sharp and bitter, carrying a strong medicinal scent that cut through the damp smell of the cave.

‎"Use Healing Herbs," he muttered quietly.

‎The moment he crushed the leaves against his palm and pressed them against the claw wound on his shoulder, a faint warmth spread through his skin. The sharp pain dulled first, then faded gradually, replaced by a soothing sensation that flowed through his muscles like warm water.

‎The torn sensation in his side eased.

‎The burning sting faded.

‎His breathing steadied.

‎Within seconds, the ache that had slowed his movements disappeared almost completely, leaving behind only faint soreness. His muscles relaxed, and strength returned to his arms as if his body had been reset.

‎Kaito rolled his shoulder once.

‎Then again.

‎No sharp pain.

‎No weakness.

‎Fully functional.

‎A slow breath left his mouth as his focus sharpened once more.

‎Good.

‎Now he could fight properly.

‎The sound of approaching enemies grew louder.

‎Tap… scrape… squelch… grrrrk…

‎From the dark tunnel ahead, movement began to form again. One goblin stepped into the crystal-lit area, followed immediately by another, then another behind it. Their yellow eyes glowed faintly as they spread out, forming a loose semicircle around him.

‎Four goblins.

‎And behind them—

‎Two slimes wobbled forward, their gelatinous bodies pulsing slowly, leaving wet trails across the ground.

‎Kaito exhaled slowly, lowering his center of gravity as he raised the spear once more. This time, his posture felt steadier, sharper. The earlier fear hadn't vanished—but it had changed into focus.

‎They weren't coming one at a time anymore.

‎They were hunting him.

‎One goblin let out a loud, rasping howl.

‎"GRAAAAK!"

‎That was the signal.

‎All of them rushed at once.

‎The first goblin lunged forward with claws raised, while another circled to his right, trying to flank him. At the same time, one of the slimes launched itself from behind, stretching through the air like a thrown mass of liquid.

‎Everything happened at once.

‎Kaito reacted instantly.

‎Instead of retreating, he stepped forward aggressively, thrusting his spear straight into the chest of the leading goblin before it could close the gap.

‎THRUST!

‎The tip pierced deep, driving through flesh with brutal force. The goblin shrieked as blood burst outward, but Kaito didn't stop there. He twisted the spear violently before ripping it free, sending the creature collapsing onto the ground.

‎Before the body even hit the floor, the second goblin attacked from the side.

‎Its claws slashed toward his ribs.

‎Kaito twisted sharply, barely avoiding the strike as the claws grazed his armor. Using the motion, he spun his body halfway and drove the butt end of the spear backward into the goblin's jaw.

‎CRACK!

‎The impact snapped its head sideways, staggering it long enough for him to reverse the spear and drive the blade forward again.

‎The metal tip punched straight through its throat.

‎Dark blood sprayed across the stone.

‎Two down.

‎But the slimes were already airborne.

‎One slammed into the ground beside him, splattering acid across the floor. A few droplets struck his boots, producing faint sizzling sounds that made him recoil instantly.

‎Too slow—

‎The second slime lunged directly toward his leg.

‎Kaito jumped backward just in time, narrowly avoiding contact as the creature splattered against the ground. He reacted immediately, driving the spear downward into its core before it could reform fully.

‎Pop!

‎The slime collapsed into a lifeless puddle.

‎But there was no time to breathe.

‎The remaining goblins attacked together.

‎One rushed head-on while another leapt from the side, attempting to tackle him to the ground. Their movements were chaotic, aggressive, relentless.

‎Kaito ducked beneath the incoming claws, feeling the rush of air pass just above his head. Using the lowered stance, he thrust forward with explosive force, driving the spear into the charging goblin's stomach.

‎The impact pushed the creature backward violently.

‎Before he could finish it, the last goblin slammed into him from the side.

‎The collision knocked him off balance.

‎For a split second—

‎His footing slipped.

‎He nearly fell.

‎That moment of instability sent a spike of panic through his chest as the wounded goblin tried to grab onto him, claws reaching desperately toward his neck.

‎Kaito reacted purely on instinct.

‎He released one hand from the spear and drove his elbow straight into the goblin's face.

‎CRACK!

‎The impact shattered its nose, forcing it backward long enough for him to regain balance. With both hands gripping the spear again, he stepped forward and drove the blade cleanly through the creature's chest.

‎The body went limp instantly.

‎Only one enemy remained.

‎The last slime wobbled weakly across the ground, its core still pulsing faintly.

‎Kaito exhaled heavily, sweat forming along his forehead as he steadied himself. His muscles trembled slightly from the strain, but his grip never loosened.

‎He stepped forward slowly.

‎Carefully.

‎Then drove the spear downward one final time.

‎Pop.

‎The last slime collapsed into a lifeless puddle.

‎Silence returned to the cavern once again.

‎This time—

‎There were no footsteps.

‎No growls.

‎No howls.

‎Just the sound of his own breathing filling the empty space.

‎Kaito remained standing in the middle of the fallen monsters, chest rising and falling as adrenaline slowly drained from his system. His arms felt heavy now, muscles aching from repeated strikes, but the fight was over.

‎He had survived.

‎Not by luck.

‎Not by chance.

‎But by fighting through every mistake, every close call, every moment where he nearly lost control.

‎And in the end—

‎He had won.
