Chapter 9: The Truth That Wasn't There

Tanoy made his choice.

He stood in front of the hospital again.

The cheque still in his pocket.

But this time—

His steps were steady.

"No," he whispered to himself.

"I won't do it."

He entered the building.

Took the elevator.

Pressed—

11

The doors opened.

The corridor looked the same.

Silent.

Cold.

Tanoy walked forward.

Counting the rooms.

Searching.

He stopped.

Frowned.

Looked again.

There was no 1101.

His heartbeat quickened.

He checked again.

Room numbers—

101… 102… 103…

Up to 130.

No 1101.

A cold wave ran through his body.

He rushed to the reception.

"Excuse me," he said, trying to stay calm. "Room 1101?"

The receptionist looked confused.

"We don't have a room like that."

Tanoy's throat went dry.

"What about a patient… a little girl?"

"Name?"

"Rupkotha."

The receptionist typed quickly.

Paused.

Then shook her head.

"No patient by that name."

Tanoy felt the ground shift beneath him.

"That's not possible," he whispered.

"She's here. I saw her yesterday."

The receptionist frowned.

"Sir, are you sure you have the right hospital?"

Tanoy stepped back.

His breathing became uneven.

This didn't make sense.

None of it did.

He rushed through the corridor again.

Checked every room.

Every corner.

Nothing.

No girl.

No machines.

No doctor.

Nothing.

Tanoy stood in the middle of the hallway.

Frozen.

Then slowly—

He reached into his pocket.

The cheque.

It was still there.

Real.

Which meant—

This wasn't a dream.

Then what was it?

Who was that man?

And why did it feel like—

This was far from over?
