Chapter 167 - Chapter 167: Totodile Evolves

In a forest clearing, the morning sunlight filtered through the gaps between the leaves, casting a golden glow over the training ground.

Ash carefully examined Totodile's condition, satisfaction filling his eyes.

"You've improved a lot under Wartortle's guidance," he murmured to himself.

Ever since learning Swords Dance and Water Pulse, the energetic little crocodile had clearly become much more confident.

After giving it some thought, Ash decided to send Snorlax back to Professor Oak's Laboratory and bring back the rapidly improving Totodile instead.

The little glutton had learned several new moves while training at the lab. It was time to see the results of all that hard work.

"Quilava, I choose you!"

A flash of light burst from the Poké Ball, and the agile Quilava appeared at the opposite end of the clearing.

The flames on its back burned steadily, a clear sign that it was in excellent condition.

"Today's battle is up to the two of you," Ash said as he stepped aside. His expression turned serious. "This will test your ability to make decisions during battle without my commands."

Totodile excitedly slapped its tail against the ground, while Quilava calmly nodded.

As the battle began, two completely different forces collided in midair.

Scorching flames met rushing water, and thick clouds of steam instantly spread across the battlefield.

Following its instincts, Totodile charged straight into the mist, its sharp claws slicing through the air as it lunged at its opponent.

However, Quilava lightly leaped backward, effortlessly avoiding the Slash attack.

"What incredible reflexes!" Brock couldn't help exclaiming as he watched.

Undeterred, Totodile swung its powerful tail, sending a wave of water crashing toward its opponent.

Even after evolving, Quilava had retained its remarkable agility. It sidestepped the attack with ease, while the flames on its back flared slightly, as if silently warning Totodile not to underestimate it.

Missing attack after attack gradually made Totodile impatient.

It bared its sharp fangs and lunged in with Bite, hoping to pin Quilava down, but it missed once again.

Seizing the opportunity, Quilava slammed into Totodile with a clean, decisive Tackle, sending the little crocodile flying.

"Calm down!" Ash called out. "Getting impatient only creates openings for your opponent!"

While still airborne, Totodile adjusted its posture as icy energy gathered around its fangs.

Just as Ice Fang was about to connect, Quilava suddenly curled into a ball, and blazing flames instantly enveloped its entire body.

Ice and fire collided with a loud hiss, sending clouds of steam billowing across the battlefield as Totodile was knocked back once more.

The overwhelming force of Flame Wheel left Totodile sprawled on the ground.

Yet the little Pokémon slowly climbed back to its feet.

Those round eyes burned with fierce determination.

"Is that all you've got?" Ash's voice cut through the tense atmosphere. "Are you really willing to be completely suppressed by an opponent that should be at a type disadvantage?"

Those words seemed to flip a switch inside Totodile.

Totodile threw its head back and let out a mighty roar as its entire body began to radiate the brilliant light of evolution.

Within the dazzling white glow, its body gradually grew taller. Cream colored stripes appeared across its belly, while the fins on its back and tail sharpened into blade-like edges.

When the light finally faded, a newly evolved Croconaw stood proudly before them.

Although it was breathing a little heavily from the exhausting battle, the fighting spirit burning in its eyes was fiercer than ever before.

"That's enough," Ash said, ending the battle at the perfect moment. "Your body needs time to adjust after evolving. We'll stop here for today."

Misty walked over with a smile.

"Congratulations, Ash. Looks like Totodile was really determined to become stronger."

That afternoon, training continued by a nearby river.

The crystal clear water provided the perfect environment for Water type Pokémon to train.

"Croconaw, your bite force has increased dramatically after evolving," Ash instructed his newly evolved partner. "Now is the perfect time for you to learn Ice type moves."

He first demonstrated how to circulate the energy required for Ice Beam, then carefully explained the technique behind unleashing Blizzard.

Croconaw listened intently, occasionally attempting to gather Ice type energy.

Its first few attempts produced nothing more than wisps of icy mist in the air, but it showed no sign of discouragement.

On the opposite bank of the river, Misty was playing with her Water type partners.

Her newly evolved Starmie sparkled brilliantly beneath the afternoon sun, while the jewel at its center reflected dazzling rainbow colored light.

"Thanks for giving me that Water Stone," Misty said as Ash walked over. "Starmie's strength has improved a lot."

Just then, the peaceful scene was suddenly interrupted.

A Poliwhirl that had been happily swimming suddenly paddled frantically toward the shore. Close behind it was a large, muscular Poliwrath.

Without hesitation, Poliwrath slammed its hand down like a chopping strike onto the water's surface, sending a massive splash crashing over Poliwhirl and knocking it head over heels.

"Stop!" Misty hurried in front of Poliwhirl protectively, glaring angrily at the aggressive Poliwrath.

Ash quickly rushed over, with Croconaw and Pikachu following close behind.

He immediately noticed the numerous battle scars covering Poliwrath's body. Yet despite its intimidating appearance, there was no hostility in its eyes. Instead, they carried a hint of anticipation.

"Poliwrath's Fighting type instincts make it look rather fierce," Ash analyzed. "But it seems to be after something else."

As everyone stood there in confusion, a trainer carrying a fishing rod over his shoulder emerged from the forest.

Seeing the standoff, he casually asked, "Is there something wrong with my Poliwrath?"

Misty glared at him angrily.

"Hey! Don't you think you're being completely unreasonable?"

"I don't think so," the trainer replied matter of factly. "My Poliwrath only gave your Poliwhirl one hit, and it immediately ran behind you to hide. It's far too timid. That's exactly why your Poliwhirl still hasn't evolved. It simply doesn't have enough battle experience."
