Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Agniya – Warrior of the Fire Tribe

The land of fire never slept.

Even in silence, it burned.

Jagged mountains of blackened stone stretched toward the sky, their peaks glowing faintly with molten veins running beneath the surface like the pulse of a living beast. The air itself felt heavy, thick with heat and ash. Smoke drifted across the horizon in slow, curling waves, staining the sky in deep shades of crimson and orange.

This was the homeland of the Fire Tribe.

A place where weakness did not survive.

A place where strength was not a choice, but a necessity.

And at the very heart of it stood Agniya.

She moved across the training grounds like a living flame. Every step was light, precise, almost silent despite the scorched earth beneath her feet. Fire coiled around her arms, flickering and twisting as if it were alive, responding to her thoughts and her breathing.

She spun sharply, her body cutting through the air with perfect control. A blade of fire extended from her motion, slicing forward with deadly accuracy.

The target ahead shattered instantly upon impact, bursting apart in a violent explosion of heat and force.

Agniya exhaled slowly, her chest rising and falling in controlled rhythm.

"…Not enough."

Her voice remained calm, but her eyes burned with something deeper than fire. Determination.

Around her, other warriors trained with relentless intensity. The clash of fists, the roar of flames, and the sound of weapons striking echoed across the grounds. Yet none of them matched her focus.

Because Agniya was not training just to become stronger.

She was training to surpass her limits.

A voice echoed in her mind, as clear as if it had been spoken beside her.

"Again."

Firm. Unyielding.

Her mentor.

The one who had shaped her, pushed her, and forced her to confront her own weaknesses again and again.

"Fire is not just destruction, Agniya."

"You must control it."

"Or it will control you."

Her hand tightened into a fist, flames flaring slightly in response.

"…I know."

But knowing something and mastering it were not the same.

A sudden shift in the air broke her focus.

It was subtle at first. Almost unnoticeable.

Then she felt it clearly.

Cold.

Agniya froze.

Her flames flickered, unstable for a brief moment.

"…That's strange…"

Fire did not behave like that without reason.

Something was wrong.

Then she heard it.

A distant scream.

Her eyes sharpened instantly.

"…Village edge."

Without hesitation, she turned and ran.

By the time she arrived, chaos had already taken over.

Fire spread across the ground, but it was not hers.

These flames were wrong. Dark. Twisted. They moved unnaturally, crawling across surfaces like living shadows rather than true fire.

Villagers ran in panic, their voices filled with fear.

"Help us!"

Agniya stepped forward, her presence immediately commanding attention.

"…Get behind me."

Her aura ignited, flames rising around her as she prepared to fight.

Then she saw them.

The creatures.

They were not fully solid, yet not entirely shadow either. Their forms shifted constantly, as if they could not decide what they truly were. Darkness clung to them, moving like liquid across their bodies.

"…So it's true…" she murmured.

"…Something is spreading."

The creatures attacked without warning. Fast. Relentless.

Agniya reacted instantly. Her arm moved forward, and flames erupted in a powerful wave.

"Burn."

Fire exploded outward, engulfing several of the creatures at once. They screamed as the flames consumed them.

But they did not vanish.

Agniya's eyes narrowed.

"…What?"

The creatures reformed, their bodies pulling back together as if the damage meant nothing.

Stronger than before.

"…So normal attacks won't work…"

She stepped forward again, faster this time. More precise. Flames extended from her hands, shaping into whips that struck multiple enemies at once.

She moved like a storm, every motion controlled, every attack deadly.

Yet they kept coming.

Then something changed.

The shadows behind the creatures shifted differently.

Agniya paused for the briefest moment.

"…Someone's there."

And then he stepped out.

Nish.

Calm. Silent. His expression unreadable.

Agniya's flames flared immediately.

"…You."

She did not fully remember him, but something about him felt familiar.

"…You're connected to this."

Nish gave no response.

Instead, he moved.

In an instant, he passed through the creatures. Dark energy sliced through them with unnatural precision.

For a moment, everything stopped.

Then the creatures collapsed, unable to reform this time.

Agniya watched carefully.

"…So you're not with them…"

She stepped closer, her flames still active.

"…Or maybe you are."

Her gaze sharpened.

"…Explain."

Silence.

Her flames intensified.

"…Then I'll make you."

She attacked first. A blazing strike aimed directly at him.

Nish vanished.

Her attack struck empty space.

She turned instantly, blocking a shadow strike from behind.

"You think you're fast?" she said.

Fire and shadow collided, sending waves of energy through the air.

But something felt off.

He was holding back.

"…Why are you holding back?"

No answer.

Before she could press further, the creatures attacked again.

Agniya clicked her tongue in irritation.

"…Fine."

She turned back toward the enemies.

"…We deal with this first."

Nish did not argue.

And just like that, they fought together.

Agniya unleashed powerful waves of fire, forcing the creatures back. Nish moved through the shadows, striking with precision and finishing what her flames began.

Their styles were completely different. Opposites.

Yet they worked together perfectly.

Where her power overwhelmed, his precision ended the fight.

Where his attacks created openings, her flames destroyed everything.

No words were exchanged.

None were needed.

The creatures began to merge, forming a single massive entity. Its presence alone distorted the air around it.

"…Now this is more like it," Agniya said with a faint smirk.

Flames rose higher around her, stronger than before.

"…Don't slow me down."

Nish stood beside her, silent but ready.

Together, they attacked.

Fire and shadow collided with the creature from both sides, tearing it apart in a massive explosion that lit up the sky.

Then, silence.

The battlefield grew still.

The darkness faded.

The villagers slowly emerged, safe once more.

Agniya stood there, her breathing steady as the flames around her calmed.

She turned.

Nish was already walking away.

"…Hey."

He stopped, but did not turn around.

"…You saved them."

A pause.

"…Why?"

His answer came simply.

"…Because they needed saving."

Agniya watched him, something unfamiliar stirring within her chest.

"…You're strange," she said quietly.

No response.

She looked away slightly.

"…But… thanks."

Nish disappeared into the shadows without another word.

The village slowly returned to life, but Agniya remained at the edge, staring into the distance where he had vanished.

"…Nish…"

Her flames flickered softly.

"…Next time…"

A small smile formed on her lips.

"…don't run."

Far away, hidden within darkness, Tamraj watched.

"…The fire awakens…"

A faint smile crossed his face.

"…Good."
