Chapter 18: Jyoti – Daughter of the Temple

The temple bells rang at dawn.

Soft.

Gentle.

Pure.

Their sound echoed across the valley, flowing through the mountains like a quiet prayer offered to the world. It carried warmth, peace, and something deeper—something that reached beyond sound and touched the soul itself.

Where darkness hid in silence—

Light revealed itself in harmony.

High above the distant villages, surrounded by ancient stone pillars and sacred trees that had stood for centuries, stood the Temple of Radiance. It was untouched by fear, untouched by corruption, a place where faith was not just believed—but lived.

It was a sanctuary.

A place where light was not just seen—

But felt.

And at its heart—

Lived a girl named Jyoti.

The Child of Light

Jyoti stood barefoot on the cool stone floor of the inner sanctum. Her hands were gently pressed together in prayer, her breathing calm and steady. Golden sunlight streamed through the temple windows, illuminating her figure in a soft, radiant glow.

Her long hair shimmered faintly under the light, moving slightly with the morning breeze that drifted through the halls.

Her expression was peaceful.

Untroubled.

"Focus your mind," a gentle voice said from behind her.

Jyoti slowly opened her eyes.

Before her stood the High Priestess—the one who had raised her, guided her, and shaped her understanding of the world since childhood. She was not just a mentor. She was family.

"I am trying," Jyoti replied softly.

The priestess smiled, her gaze warm yet knowing.

"You are not trying," she said. "You are already there. You simply need to realize it."

Jyoti tilted her head slightly, confusion flickering in her eyes.

"…Realize what?"

The priestess stepped closer and placed a gentle hand over Jyoti's heart.

"That the light you seek…" she said quietly,

"…has always been within you."

Jyoti felt it then.

A warmth spreading through her chest.

Soft.

Comforting.

But also unfamiliar in a way she could not explain.

A Life of Peace

Unlike Nish, Jyoti had never known loneliness.

She had grown up surrounded by care, by kindness, by people who believed in her long before she understood why.

The temple was her home.

The people within it were her family.

Her days were filled with learning ancient teachings, studying the nature of light, and assisting in rituals that maintained balance in the world. She helped the injured, soothed the suffering, and brought comfort wherever she could.

Where others trained to fight—

She trained to heal.

"Pain does not always need to be defeated," the priestess once told her.

"Sometimes, it needs to be understood."

Jyoti believed those words.

She wanted to believe them completely.

But deep within her—

There was a question.

A quiet one she had never voiced aloud.

"If light exists to protect…" she whispered to herself one afternoon, watching the sun stretch across the valley,

"…then what does it protect us from?"

The Night She Could Not Explain

The answer came sooner than she expected.

It was a night unlike any other.

The temple bells rang—

But not in peace.

In warning.

Jyoti ran through the temple halls, her heart pounding as the once-calm atmosphere turned tense. The air felt unstable, as if something unseen had begun to tear at the fabric of reality itself.

"What's happening?" she called out.

No one answered immediately.

Because no one understood.

She stepped outside—

And froze.

The sky above the temple was breaking.

A glowing fracture stretched across the heavens, spreading slowly like a crack in glass. The light flickered unnaturally, and the air trembled with an energy that did not belong to this world.

"This isn't natural…" the priestess whispered.

Jyoti stared upward, unable to look away.

And then—

Everything changed.

The Vision

For a brief moment, reality shattered.

Jyoti found herself standing in a place that did not exist.

Darkness stretched endlessly around her.

But it was not empty.

It was alive.

In the distance, figures began to appear.

Children.

Each one surrounded by something different.

One stood within flames.

One moved with flowing water.

One was grounded in earth.

One was carried by the wind.

And one—

Surrounded by shadows.

Jyoti's breath caught.

Her gaze fixed on him.

He stood apart from the others. Silent. Still. The darkness around him moved like it was alive, responding to him, protecting him, isolating him.

But his eyes—

They were not filled with cruelty.

They were filled with something far more painful.

Loneliness.

Jyoti took a step forward.

"Wait…"

She raised her hand instinctively. Light gathered within her palm, glowing softly, responding to her will without effort.

"You're not alone—"

But before she could reach him—

The space shattered.

Everything disappeared.

Back to Reality

Jyoti collapsed to her knees.

The temple returned.

The sky returned.

The world returned.

But she had changed.

"That wasn't a dream…" she whispered.

The priestess rushed toward her.

"Jyoti—what did you see?"

Jyoti hesitated, trying to understand it herself.

"…Other children…" she said slowly.

"…And one… surrounded by darkness…"

The priestess froze.

For the first time, her calm expression broke.

"So it has begun…" she murmured.

"What has?" Jyoti asked.

But the priestess did not answer.

The Truth of Light

After that night, everything changed.

Training became more intense.

More focused.

More urgent.

"You must understand something," the priestess said one evening.

"Light does not exist because the world is peaceful."

Jyoti listened carefully.

"It exists because darkness does."

Silence filled the room.

"And one day," the priestess continued,

"…you will have to face it."

The First Doubt

For the first time in her life—

Jyoti felt fear.

Not for herself.

But for what she did not understand.

"That boy…" she whispered one night, standing beneath the quiet sky,

"…was he the darkness?"

She did not want to believe that.

Because in his eyes—

She had not seen evil.

She had seen pain.

The Attack

It happened at dawn.

Without warning.

A scream echoed through the temple.

Jyoti rushed outside—

And froze.

Creatures moved across the temple walls.

Twisted.

Unstable.

Corrupted.

Their forms seemed broken, like something that should not exist. Their presence filled the air with suffocating pressure.

"What are those…?"

"Darkness given form," the priestess said.

"They shouldn't exist…"

But they did.

And they were attacking.

The Temple Falls

The guardians fought back with everything they had.

But it was not enough.

The creatures were relentless.

Jyoti tried to move forward, to help, but her hands trembled.

"I can't…"

"Jyoti!"

The priestess stood before her.

"Listen to me," she said firmly.

"This is your moment."

"The light within you…"

"…awaken it."

Awakening of Light

The creatures closed in.

Fear tightened around her chest.

Doubt clouded her mind.

"I'm not ready…"

"Yes, you are."

Jyoti closed her eyes.

She remembered the warmth.

The peace.

The voice.

"The light you seek… has always been within you."

Something ignited.

Soft at first.

Then—

Blinding.

Golden light erupted from within her, expanding outward in a powerful wave. The darkness recoiled instantly, unable to withstand its purity.

Her eyes opened.

Glowing.

Calm.

The light moved with her.

Flowed through her.

She stepped forward.

And for the first time—

She was not afraid.

The Saint Awakens

The creatures lunged.

But the light struck first.

Pure.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

They dissolved instantly, unable to exist in its presence.

Jyoti moved with unnatural grace, as if her body already knew what to do. Every step was precise. Every movement perfect.

The temple fell silent.

The darkness vanished.

Only light remained.

The Cost

Jyoti turned, relief beginning to form.

"We did it…"

But the priestess—

Was on her knees.

Her body was fading.

"No…"

Jyoti rushed to her side, her voice breaking.

"Don't leave me…"

The priestess smiled gently.

"You don't need me anymore…"

"You have become…"

Her voice softened.

"The Saint of Light."

Her hand fell still.

Gone.

Final Scene

Jyoti stood alone in the temple.

But she was no longer the same.

The light around her pulsed softly, responding to her presence like a living force.

"I understand now…" she said quietly.

"Light exists to protect…"

She paused, her gaze lowering slightly.

"…even from the darkness within."

Then she looked toward the horizon.

Toward a world she had never truly seen before.

"…And I will find that boy…"

Her voice steadied.

"…and save him."

The wind moved gently through the temple ruins.

And in that moment—

The Saint of Light stepped into her destiny.
