A CHANCE ENCOUNTER
Vera held her small bag close to her chest as she climbed the hospital steps. One step after the other. Her legs felt weak again… that same strange weakness that had been coming and going for days now. Not long after her 15th birthday she had been feeling constant dizziness and body weakness, which she couldn't ascertain and it was getting out of hand but she hid it from her aunt till she was able to save up some money to visit the nearest hospital for tests. She leaned lightly against the railing, breathing slowly, trying not to draw attention to herself."I'm fine," she whispered under her breath. "It's just a check-up… nothing serious." But even as she said it, she didn't believe it. Something wasn't right.Inside, the hospital smelled clean and cold. It reminded her of a place she had tried very hard to forget. She walked to the reception desk and placed the money she had saved carefully on the counter."I… I'd like to run some tests," she said softly. The nurse glanced at her, then gave a small nod. "Alright, dear. Have a seat. The doctor will call you." "Thank you," Vera murmured. She turned and found a seat in the waiting area, lowering herself gently like her body might break if she moved too fast. The waiting room was busy. People talking softly, coughing, Footsteps moving in and out.Vera sat very still, looking around. She noticed an older woman likely in her late fifties, Elegant and calm. The type of person people noticed without trying. She was standing because the room was occupied and there was no vacant space. Vera stood up and gestured to the woman ."Excuse me, ma'am, you can have my seat." The woman blinked slightly, then smiled. "No, no. You were here first." "It's okay," Vera said quickly, shaking her head. "Please… you can take it."The woman studied her for a moment… then slowly sat down."Thank you," she said. Vera nodded and stepped back, standing quietly beside the chair."You're very polite," the woman added. Vera gave a small, unsure smile. "It's nothing." "How old are you?" the woman asked gently. "Fifteen." The woman's expression changed slightly. Fifteen… "Why aren't you in school?" she asked. Vera's fingers tightened around her bag. She looked down. "I… don't go anymore," she said quietly. "My aunt… she couldn't pay." It wasn't the full truth but it was the truth. "I see," the woman said softly. She didn't press further. And for that, Vera was grateful."Vera Williams?" The nurse's voice cut through the room. Vera looked up quickly. "That's me." She stepped forward, then paused and turned slightly. "You can go first," she said to the woman. The woman shook her head. "No. You go." Vera hesitated… then nodded and followed the nurse. The doctor's office felt too quiet. Vera sat on the chair, her hands folded tightly in her lap as the doctor looked at her and began a consultation. "You're here for some tests if I'm correct? What are the symptoms you're feeling"? Vera explained how she's been feeling these past few days, with dizziness, body weakness, shortness of breath after a while and joint pain. He asked her about any past medical conditions, to which she spoke about her cancer when she was a child."We definitely have to run some blood tests" He said standing up, he spoke with the nurses after which Vera was taken to run the tests. An hour later, her results were out. The Doctor didn't speak immediately. That scared her more than anything."Vera…" he finally said. Her heart skipped. "Yes… Sir?" He looked at her gently, "It looks like your cancer has come back." The words didn't make sense at first. They just… hung there. "What?" she whispered. "It's still early," he said quickly. "It's a mild relapse. We caught it early." Vera stared at him. "I thought… I was okay," she said, her voice breaking. "I thought it was over…" The doctor leaned forward slightly. "I know. But this doesn't mean you can't fight it again. You've done it before." Her eyes filled with tears. She didn't wipe them this time."I'm tired," she whispered. The words slipped out before she could stop them. The doctor's expression softened. "I understand. But you're not alone in this."Vera didn't respond. Because deep down…she felt like she was really exhausted. " For now, we'll place you on some medications, you have to be diligent with them and ensure you come around during your appointments for proper monitoring. When she stepped out of the office, everything felt heavier. She held the file close to her chest like it might fall if she loosened her grip. Her steps were slow and unsteady."Hey… are you okay?"The voice made her stop. She looked up. It was the same woman, she had come to the hospital for a check-up and had seen a doctor, but decided to wait for Vera."You waited?" Vera asked softly. The woman nodded. "I wanted to see you." Vera didn't know why… but that made something inside her chest ache. "I'm fine," she said automatically. The woman didn't believe her. "Are you sure you're alright, you must have heard some unpleasant news in there". Vera showed her test results and the woman sympathized with her. "It's gonna be alright darling. Cancers are treatable these days and people recover from them, especially if treated early ,you don't have to be disturbed okay. Just endeavor to follow the doctor's prescription. You'll be alright dear".Vera nodded wiping her tears, her heart felt lighter. Come," she said gently. "Let me take you home." Vera blinked. "No… I—I can manage." "I insist."There was something calm but firm in her voice. Vera hesitated… then slowly nodded. "Okay…"The car was… different. It was clean, quiet, and of the latest model. She sat with her in the backseat as the driver drove off. Vera sat carefully, like she didn't belong there."Thank you," she said quietly. The woman smiled. "You're welcome. I'm Mrs. Elizabeth." "I'm Vera…" she replied. Then after a pause, "Vera Williams." Mrs. Elizabeth glanced at her and nodded with a smile. "You're a kind girl," Mrs. Elizabeth said after a while. Vera shook her head. "I just… did what I was supposed to." "Not everyone does." Silence filled the car for a moment. "You should be in school," Mrs. Elizabeth said. Vera looked down at her hands. "I want to be." "But?" "My aunt… she won't pay." Mrs. Elizabeth nodded slowly. Then she reached into her bag and pulled out a flyer. "Take this."Vera accepted it carefully. Her eyes scanned the words. Sterling Heights Academy. Her breath caught. "I… I know this school," she whispered. "It's for… rich people." Mrs. Elizabeth smiled slightly. "Not just for them." Vera looked up. "I'm giving you a full scholarship."Everything went still. "Me?" she asked, barely audible."Yes." "Everything… is covered?" "Yes." Vera's grip on the paper tightened. Her vision blurred. "I…" she couldn't even finish. "This is your chance," Mrs. Elizabeth said gently. "Take it." A tear slipped down Vera's cheek. "Thank you," she whispered. "Thank you so much…"When the car stopped, Vera stepped out slowly. Then she turned. "Thank you!" she called again. Mrs. Elizabeth gave a small nod. "Make it count."Vera didn't walk, she ran. Her legs didn't hurt anymore. Her chest didn't feel heavy. For the first time in so long… she felt light. She burst into the café. "Lina!" She screamed in excitement.Lina looked up. "Hey, what happened?" Vera held up the paper, shaking. "I got in," she said, breathless. "Sterling Heights… I got a scholarship!"Lina froze. Then her eyes widened. "Wait—what?! That school, you mean the Almighty Sterling Heights. Every young person's dream school?!" "Yes!" Vera laughed, tears slipping down her face. "I'm going back to school!" Lina grabbed her hands. "Vera… that's amazing!" Vera nodded, smiling through everything she had been holding in for years. For once…something good had found her.She had even forgotten about her test results and didn't inform Lina about them. She was filled with excitement about the news of her going back to school. "And maybe…" she said softly, almost to herself. Lina tilted her head. "Maybe what?" Vera looked down at the paper… then smiled faintly. "…maybe I'll see him again.""Who?" Vera didn't answer. But in her heart, one name echoed quietly. Dylan. And for the first time in a long time…Hope didn't feel impossible.
