Chapter 2 - The Boy who knew too much

Chapter 2: The Boy Who Knew Too Much

Kayla didn't stop running until she reached her house. Her chest burned, her legs ached, but the fear still clung to her like a shadow that refused to let go. She slammed the door behind her and leaned against it, breathing hard, her fingers trembling as she tried to steady herself. The house was quiet. Too quiet. Her foster mother wasn't home yet. For once, Kayla was grateful. She didn't think she could explain what had just happened even if she tried

She pushed herself away from the door and stumbled toward the small mirror hanging on the wall. For a second, she hesitated. Then she looked. Her reflection stared back at her—same face, same eyes… but something was different. There was a faint glow still lingering deep within her pupils, like gold hidden beneath brown. She stepped closer. "No…" she whispered, shaking her head. "This isn't real." But as she lifted her hand, the air around her fingers shimmered slightly, like heat rising from fire. Kayla quickly pulled back, her heart racing again. "What is wrong with me?"

A knock came suddenly at the door.

Kayla froze.

Slow. Deliberate. Not frantic. Not normal.

Her breath caught as fear crept back in. "Who is it?" she called out, her voice barely steady.

"Open the door, Kayla."

Her stomach dropped.

Jamie.

She rushed forward and pulled the door open. He stood there, calm as ever, like nothing in the world could shake him. But his eyes—his eyes were searching her face, intense and knowing. "You felt it, didn't you?" he asked quietly.

Kayla stared at him, anger quickly replacing fear. "Felt it? Jamie, something attacked me!" she snapped, stepping back to let him in. "And then I—" She stopped, her voice catching. "I did something. I don't even know what it was."

Jamie closed the door behind him and turned to face her. "You used your power."

She laughed bitterly. "Power? You sound insane."

"I'm not," he said calmly. "And neither are you."

Kayla shook her head, pacing the room. "No, this doesn't make sense. I'm just… me. I go to school, I come home, I try to survive this stupid life. That's it. No powers. No shadows chasing me. No—" "—No kingdom?" Jamie cut in softly.

She stopped moving.

Slowly, she turned to look at him. "Stop saying that."

"You know it's true," he said.

"No, I don't!" she snapped. "I don't know anything anymore!"

Silence filled the room.

Jamie took a step closer, his voice gentler now. "Kayla… what happened tonight wasn't random. That thing that attacked you—it wasn't human. And it won't be the last."

Her breath hitched. "What do you mean… won't be the last?"

"It means they've found you."

Fear tightened in her chest again. "Who is 'they'?"

Jamie hesitated for a brief second before answering. "The people who took your throne."

The words hung heavily in the air.

Kayla let out a small, disbelieving laugh, but it sounded weak. "This is crazy."

"I wish it was," he replied.

She ran a hand through her hair, frustration building. "Okay, let's say—just say—you're not lying. Why me? Why would any of this have anything to do with me?"

Jamie looked straight into her eyes. "Because you're not just Kayla."

Her heart pounded.

"You were born into a royal bloodline," he continued. "A powerful one. Your kingdom was destroyed years ago. Your parents…" He paused slightly. "They were killed."

Kayla's chest tightened painfully. "Stop."

"You were hidden away to protect you," he said, his voice steady but softer now. "Given a new life. A new name. Everything you are now… it's not the full truth."

"Stop it!" she shouted, her eyes filling with tears. "I don't remember any of that! I don't feel like some lost queen! I'm just—" Her voice broke. "I'm just me."

Jamie stepped closer, his expression firm. "That's because your memories were sealed. Your power too. Until now."

Kayla shook her head, backing away from him. "No… no, I don't want this. I don't want any of this!"

"You don't get to choose," he said quietly.

That hit her harder than anything else.

Silence fell again, heavier this time.

After a moment, Kayla spoke, her voice small. "Why do you know all this?"

Jamie didn't answer immediately. His gaze shifted slightly, like he was weighing something.

Then he said, "Because I made a promise."

She frowned. "To who?"

"To you."

Her confusion deepened. "That doesn't make any sense."

"It will," he said. "Just not yet."

Kayla stared at him, searching his face for answers, but all she saw was certainty. And something else… something that looked a lot like loyalty.

Or maybe even devotion.

Her heart skipped slightly, but she ignored it.

"What happens now?" she asked quietly.

Jamie's expression hardened. "Now… you learn the truth. And you prepare."

"For what?"

His eyes darkened slightly.

"For war."

A chill ran down Kayla's spine.

Outside, the wind began to rise again, brushing against the windows like a warning.

Somewhere in the distance, unseen eyes were already watching.

Waiting.

And this time… they wouldn't miss.
