Chapter 105 - The Guiding Light

Chapter 105: The Guiding Light

The adrenaline from last night's harrowing skirmish with Myotismon had long since faded, leaving behind the heavy, obvious exhaustion of youth. Tai and the others were, at their core, still just children. Once the oppressive shadows receded and they confirmed the vampire lord had truly been driven away, the DigiDestined succumbed to their heavy eyelids, gradually drifting back into a restless sleep.

It wasn't until the first pale streaks of dawn pierced the canopy on their second day in this new land that they began to stir. The morning air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of dew and damp earth.

"Big Brother Tai, good morning."

Tai rubbed the sleep from his eyes, blinking against the morning light. He offered a warm, if slightly groggy, smile. "Is that Takeru? Good morning. And good morning to you too, Patamon."

His cheerful greeting quickly gave way to a look of deep concern as his gaze settled on the small, winged Digimon resting atop Takeru's head. "Patamon, are you feeling any better today?"

The memory of last night's brutal clash was still fresh. Patamon had fought valiantly, using his holy type advantage and sheer willpower to inflict considerable damage on the terrifying Myotismon. But that bravery had come at a steep cost. He had absorbed devastating blows from the undead lord, the sheer force of the dark magic beating him back into a devolved state at the height of the chaos.

Yet, looking at him now, the stark pallor and trembling weakness from yesterday had vanished. Patamon's condition was undoubtedly vastly improved.

"Thank you for checking on me, Big Brother Tai! I'm completely fine now!" Patamon chirped, mimicking Takeru's respectful address. To prove his point, the little mammal flapped his bat-like ears, hovering up and down in the air with a renewed, buoyant energy. "It's all thanks to Kari and Mimi taking such good care of me!"

Seeing the lively spark return to Patamon's eyes, Tai let out a long breath, his shoulders dropping in relief. "I'm really glad you're alright."

He then turned, his gaze sweeping over the rest of the camp where his companions were stretching and packing up their meager supplies. "Alright, everyone! Since we've all managed to get some rest, we need to pack up and set off as soon as possible."

He stepped toward the center of the clearing, his voice taking on a serious, commanding edge. "Right now, besides my own, we haven't found a single one of your Crests. Myotismon is incredibly dangerous. Even though he's currently at the Ultimate level, absolutely no one can guarantee he won't suddenly break through and Digivolve to the Mega level, just like Devimon did. If we want to survive and ensure everyone's safety, we have to make sure every single one of our partners achieves Ultimate level combat power."

A murmur of agreement rippled through the group. Tai's logic was sound, and the lingering dread of Myotismon's dark presence left no room for argument. Throughout their grueling journey across the Digital World, the DigiDestined had naturally fallen into an unspoken hierarchy. Whenever a critical decision had to be made, they instinctively looked to either Mizuki or Tai to lead the way.

However, while the group agreed with the plan, Izzy remained rooted to his spot, his brow furrowed in deep concern. He clutched his laptop tightly against his chest. "Are you sure it is wise to be in such a hurry?"

Izzy adjusted his posture, his analytical mind calculating the physical toll. "Tai, if my memory serves me correctly, you barely rested at all yesterday. Why don't you take a little more time to sleep?"

Izzy's assessment was entirely accurate. Tai had taken the first watch, standing guard for the entire first half of the night. Then came the sudden, explosive battle with Myotismon. Even after the vampire retreated, Tai had insisted on taking another shift in the latter half of the night, refusing to close his eyes until he was absolutely certain his friends were safe. Tallying it all up, the actual time Tai had spent sleeping was likely less than three hours.

In response, Tai simply shook his head, a dismissive but warm chuckle escaping his lips. "I'm fine, really."

He flexed his arms, rolling his shoulders to show off his boundless energy. "Even setting aside the fact that I got plenty of rest on the ship before we landed... ever since I awakened the Digi-Soul—or the Light of the Heart, I guess—my physical constitution has improved drastically. I don't feel tired at all."

Izzy studied Tai's face for a long moment, searching for any hidden signs of fatigue. Finding only bright, determined eyes, he finally sighed. "...Alright." Since Tai was so adamant, Izzy decided to drop the matter.

Just then, a soft tug on Tai's sleeve drew his attention. Kari, who had been standing quietly by his side, looked up with wide, focused eyes. "Brother... I feel something."

Tai blinked, his posture instantly straightening. "You feel something? Is it a Crest?"

A surge of pure joy washed over his face. He vividly remembered the distinct, magnetic pull he had experienced when he found his own Crest of Courage. Now that everyone's Light of the Heart had been significantly activated through their recent trials, they possessed a latent, radar-like ability to vaguely sense the locations of their respective Crests, even across vast distances.

However, under Tai's eager, expectant gaze, Kari slowly shook her head. Her expression remained serious, her small hands clutching the hem of her shirt. "No. It's not a Crest."

"Not a Crest? Then what—"

"I don't know exactly," Kari interrupted softly, her gaze drifting toward the dense, misty tree line. "But even though it's not a Crest, I think... I think it's something incredibly important."

Seeing his little sister lost in such deep, solemn thought, Tai frowned, a protective instinct flaring in his chest.

Nearby, Izzy tapped his chin, his eyes lighting up as a logical deduction formed in his mind. He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Tai, considering the unique nature of her connection... do you think Kari might be sensing the whereabouts of her true Digimon partner?"

"Kari's partner?!" Tai repeated, completely stunned.

For a split second, his mind flashed to the three Phantomon that had been following them. But he quickly dismissed the thought. Those three ghost-type Digimon were only lingering by Kari's side out of sheer gratitude, willingly acting as her guardians to repay her for the gentle care and compassion she had shown them. They were loyal, yes, but they weren't her fated companion. Kari's true partner—the one destined to share her Light of the Heart—was still out there somewhere.

A sudden, fierce sense of urgency gripped Tai's chest. Kari was his little sister, the most important person in his world. If she could find her true partner, she would finally have the dedicated protection she needed in this brutal, unforgiving world. Her safety would be exponentially guaranteed.

He knelt down to meet her eye level, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Kari, focus for a second. Can you sense which direction this feeling is coming from?"

"I'm not entirely sure," Kari whispered, her brow furrowing slightly. "But I can try..."

She closed her eyes, taking a slow, deep breath. Silently, she reached inward, grasping the warm, radiant energy of her Light of the Heart and projecting it outward like a beacon. As the pure energy flowed through her, the vague, pulling sensation of that 'important presence' sharpened, transforming into a distinct directional tug.

Yet, as the connection solidified, the expression on her delicate face twisted into one of deep trouble and hesitation.

Tai watched the subtle shift in her features and immediately understood the unspoken complication. The location was likely far, or perhaps situated in dangerous territory. He stood up and snapped his fingers. "Izzy, bring out the map of the Server Continent."

Izzy quickly unrolled the detailed parchment. It was a vital piece of intel they had obtained from Tyrannomon—one of the Digimon under Mizuki's command—back when they had liberated the Koromon Village.

Spreading the map flat across a large, mossy boulder, Tai gathered the group. Under the expectant gazes of his friends, he looked at them one by one, his expression dead serious.

"Alright, everyone. I need you all to focus. Tell me, exactly, the directions you sensed for your respective Crests."

The group exchanged uncertain glances, sensing the heavy weight behind Tai's request. Sora, ever perceptive, quickly read the room and understood the logistical nightmare they were facing. She stepped forward, her hands resting on her hips.

"Tai, if the locations are too scattered and it really doesn't work out as a single route... we can always split up to search." She offered a reassuring smile. "In fact, covering different sectors simultaneously might even be faster."

"I have no objections to that," Matt chimed in immediately, crossing his arms over his chest.

He had been itching for action, desperate to obtain the power needed to advance Gabumon to the next stage. While Mizuki's rather unorthodox physical therapy had successfully hammered some much-needed perspective into his stubborn head, Matt's inherent, burning competitiveness remained entirely intact. He wanted his Crest, and he wanted it now.

However, Tai firmly shook his head, instantly shutting down the suggestion.

"No. Absolutely not," Tai said, his voice leaving no room for debate. "Everyone, I know you all want to find your Crests as fast as possible. I want that too. But we cannot underestimate this place. The sheer danger of the Server Continent is far, far beyond anything we ever faced on File Island."

He slammed a finger down onto the map, his eyes locking onto Matt's. "Think about it. We've only been on the Server Continent for two days, and we have already been ambushed by two different Ultimate level Digimon."

The grim reality of his words hung heavily in the morning air. They had arrived on the shores of this new continent on their first day. By the morning of the second day, they were fighting for their lives against the chaotic onslaught of Etemon. Then, just as the sun set on that very same day, they were plunged into a desperate, bloody skirmish with the terrifying Myotismon.

Now, the sun was rising on their third day.

"In an environment this perilous, splitting our combat strength is practically suicide," Tai continued, his tone softening just a fraction. "I refuse to let anyone take unnecessary risks just for the sake of efficiency. We stay together."

The stark logic of his argument connected with the group. Most of his companions nodded in silent agreement, the terrifying memories of Myotismon's dark magic still sending cold chills down their spines.

Matt, however, bristled at the absolute refusal. His pride flared, and he took a step forward, his jaw set tight. "Tai, are you looking down on me?" he demanded, his voice edged with frustration. "Just because Gabumon can't Digivolve to the Ultimate level yet doesn't mean we're dead weight! His strength won't lose to your Greymon, and you know it!"

Tai didn't rise to the bait. Instead, he met Matt's fiery glare with calm, unwavering sincerity. "Matt, I have never looked down on you. Not once."

Tai stepped closer, his voice steady and earnest. "On the contrary, if I truly thought you were weak, I wouldn't have had to physically stop you from charging headfirst into Etemon's forces yesterday. You're strong, and Gabumon is strong. But what I care about—what I have cared about from the very beginning—is making sure every single one of us makes it back home alive. It's about safety, not pride."

Matt held Tai's gaze, searching for any hint of condescension. Finding nothing but genuine, brotherly concern in Tai's clear brown eyes, the tension slowly drained from Matt's shoulders. He clicked his tongue, looking away as he crossed his arms again. "...Fine," he muttered, reluctantly yielding to Tai's arrangement. "We do it your way."

Having quelled the rising dissent, Tai turned his attention back to the small girl standing quietly by the boulder. He knelt down once more, offering her a warm, encouraging smile.

"Alright, Kari. Tell me where we need to go," he said softly. "You can definitely trust your big brother."

Kari looked at his reassuring smile, the worry lines on her face smoothing out. "...Mm," she hummed, giving a firm little nod.

Originally, Kari had hesitated, terrified that her vague feelings would drag the group into a dangerous detour and cause unnecessary trouble for Tai. But seeing how fiercely he protected them, how effortlessly he shouldered the burden of leadership, her doubts melted away. She ultimately chose to place her absolute trust in him.

Slowly, she pointed a small finger toward a distant sector on the map, outlining the approximate direction of the mysterious pull. Tai nodded, his eyes darting across the parchment. He carefully cross-referenced Kari's feeling with the vague directional pings the others had sensed for their Crests. Grabbing a charcoal pencil, he began to sketch out a rough, zigzagging action route across the Server Continent.

He charted their path methodically, moving strictly from the nearest objective to the farthest. There was no bias in his planning; he didn't intentionally favor anyone's route over another based on personal relationships or urgency. It was a purely tactical, survival-driven itinerary.

When he finally stepped back to present the finalized route, the group leaned in to inspect it. Seeing the fairness and logic in the path, absolutely no one voiced an objection.

Looking at Tai standing tall over the map, a deep shift occurred within the group. Beyond the foundational recognition and trust they already held for him, a new, unspoken sentiment blossomed in their eyes: You really won't ever disappoint us.

Feeling the unified, confident atmosphere radiating from her friends, the lingering anxiety in Kari's chest finally dissipated, leaving her feeling truly at ease.

Sure enough, she thought, a bright, genuine smile touching her lips. Big Brother is still the same reliable Big Brother he's always been.

Stepping closer, she reached out and silently gripped Tai's hand, her small fingers wrapping tightly around his as they prepared to march into the unknown.
