Chapter 178 - The Unbroken Flag

The wind howled across the castle peak, carrying with it the scent of gunpowder and snow. High above the ruined kingdom, the tattered flag of Dr. Hiluluk snapped defiantly against a steel-gray sky.

Wapol's cannon barrel gleamed in the cold light. "A symbol of faith?" he sneered, his voice dripping with contempt. "Faith in what? A dead quack? Watch as I turn his precious symbol to ash!"

The cannon roared.

But Luffy was already moving—a streak of red against the white stone. He didn't block the cannonball. He took it.

BOOM.

The impact echoed across the mountains. Smoke billowed. For a heartbeat, the world held its breath.

Then Luffy stood, smoke curling from his back, his straw hat tilted low. The flag behind him remained untouched.

"Flags aren't just cloth," Luffy said, his voice uncharacteristically grave. He turned, and his eyes burned with a fire that had nothing to do with the cannon blast. "They're promises. They're someone's life, screaming into the wind that they existed. You don't get to play with that."

Down below, Chopper felt his breath catch. Just like Hiluluk said… pirates are…

Wapol's face twisted with rage. "You sentimental fool! If you want to protect that rag so badly, you can die with it! Men! Reload! Blow them all to pieces!"

"Luffy!" Chopper cried out.

"Chopper!" Luffy yelled back, not taking his eyes off Wapol. "I'm gonna beat this guy into the ground. What are you gonna do?"

Before Chopper could answer, a blur of black and gold shot past him.

"You're not touching that flag, you bloated tyrant!" Sanji snarled, a kick already aimed at Wapol's head.

But a gnarled hand shot out, catching Sanji's ankle with impossible strength.

"Idiot cook!" Dr. Kureha barked, her face stern. "Your lumbar vertebrae are dancing the cha-cha! One more move and you'll be pissing through a tube for the rest of your short life!" With a clinical thump, she knocked him flat into the snow.

Sanji gasped, his body refusing to obey. "Damn it… Kureha!"

Wapol's laughter was a vile, grating sound. "Pathetic! No one can stop me now! Chessmarimo!"

The fused henchman, a grotesque puzzle of two men, lumbered forward. "Yes, Your Majesty!"

Wapol pointed a trembling finger at Chopper, who was shaking, not from cold, but from a rising, volcanic fury. "Crush that little freak first! The so-called 'snow monster' of Drum!"

Chessmarimo's dual heads smirked in unison. "A lonely little creature, aren't you? No family. No friends. Still defending a kingdom that fears you. Why?"

Chopper's small fists clenched. His voice, when it came, was a low, trembling growl. "As long as that flag flies… I fight."

THWIP.

Luffy's arm elongated, snatching the flagpole from the ground. With a mighty heave, he planted it deep into the highest spire of the crumbling castle, where it waved like a challenge to the heavens. "There! Now everyone can see it!"

He then shot down like a rubber bullet, landing between Chopper and the king. "He's not alone. I'm his friend." Luffy grinned, a wild, fearless thing. "You take the ugly two-headed guy. The king's mine."

Something in Chopper's heart, frozen for years, shattered and melted all at once. The confusion cleared. The loneliness evaporated. He wasn't Hiluluk's legacy. He was his proof.

"I'm not confused anymore," Chopper said, his form beginning to shift and swell, fur bristling.

Kureha held a struggling Sanji down, a rare smile touching her lips. "Let him go, lovesick fool. Even I can't stop that reindeer when his heart is set."

Chopper's transformation completed—a hulking, humanoid beast of pure muscle and intent. He locked eyes with Chessmarimo. "My name… is Tony Tony Chopper. It was given to me by the greatest doctor in the world." His voice was a deep rumble, full of grief and wrath. "Hiluluk forgave you for driving him out. He forgave you for letting this country rot."

He took a earth-shaking step forward.

"But I will never forgive you for laughing at his dream."

Chessmarimo scoffed, raising his combined fists. "Forgiveness? Dreams? Sentimental trash! We rule by power alo—"

He never finished.

Chopper moved. It wasn't a blur; it was an absence of movement followed by an impact. His massive fist connected with Chessmarimo's midsection with a sound like a splitting glacier.

CRACK.

The fused abomination's eyes bulged in twin unison. A spiderweb of fractures appeared across their joined torso. They didn't scream. They couldn't. The air had been blasted from four lungs at once.

As Chessmarimo teetered, Chopper leaned in, his whisper carrying the chill of a century-long winter. "You don't get to laugh at him."

A final, thunderous punch sent the monstrous duo flying off the mountain peak, their horrified screams fading into the abyss below.

Silence, save for the wind.

Chopper stood panting, the rage subsiding, leaving only resolve. He turned to see Luffy facing Wapol, who had backed against the castle wall, his bravado replaced by primal fear.

"Y-You… You can't! I am the king!" Wapol shrieked, his body beginning to morph and distort, his jaw unhinging into a cavernous maw. "I'll eat you! I'll eat this whole castle!"

Luffy just cracked his knuckles. "You talk too much."

The final battle was about to begin.

But in the snow, Dr. Kureha's sharp eyes caught a different movement. Sanji, using sheer will, had dragged himself toward the castle wall. His hand closed not around a weapon, but around a small, discarded transponder snail half-buried in the snow—one that had fallen from Wapol's cloak during the chaos.

He pried it open. A tiny, glowing light pulsed within.

A voice, tinny and urgent, crackled from the speaker, a voice none of them recognized: "—apol, report. The World Government vessel is on standby at your coordinates. Confirm the 'Ancient Weapon' blueprint is secure before we extract you. The Marines are not to know."

Sanji's blood ran cold. He looked up, his eyes meeting Kureha's.

Wapol wasn't just a fleeing tyrant.

He was a smuggler. And he had brought something far more dangerous than himself to this mountain.

And the extraction team was already here.
