Chapter 166 - Fever Dreams and Walking Men

The silence in the cabin was a living thing, thick and suffocating. It was broken only by the ragged, shallow breaths rasping from Nami's lips. Her skin, usually sun-kissed and vibrant, was the color of old parchment, slick with a cold sweat that smelled of sickness and fear.

Vivi's hand trembled as she pressed it against Nami's forehead. She jerked it back as if scalded. "Her fever… it's gone."

Usopp, hovering near the door, let out a shaky breath of relief. "Gone? That's good, right?"

"No," Vivi whispered, her voice cracking. "It's not good. It's zero. A zero-degree fever in this climate… it's not a recovery. It's a collapse. Her body is giving up."

The words hung in the air, a death sentence. For a heartbeat, no one moved. Then, chaos erupted.

"WHAT?!" Luffy's roar shook the timbers of the Going Merry. He lunged forward, but Sanji was faster, a blur of black suit and sheer panic, placing himself between the captain and the navigator's bunk.

"Don't crowd her!" Sanji snarled, though his eyes were wide with a terror he couldn't mask.

Usopp began pacing, hands tugging at his hair. "Zero? How can a fever be zero? What do we do? Medicine! We need—we need a miracle!"

"She's dying," Vivi stated, the clinical horror of her royal training crumbling under the weight of the truth. "Right in front of us, she's dying."

It was in this maelstrom of panic that Nami's eyes fluttered open. They were glassy, unfocused, but burning with a stubborn, desperate intelligence. Her hand, thin and pale, clawed at the blanket.

"Vivi…" the name was a dry leaf rustling. "Newspaper… under my chart…"

Confused, Vivi scrambled to the small navigation desk, her fingers finding the folded, sweat-dampened newsprint. She unfolded it, her eyes scanning the headlines from Alabasta. Reports of drought, of riots, of the royal guard's failing hold on the capital… and a grainy picture of a familiar, hook-handed man standing amidst the smoke.

"It's worse," Vivi breathed, the paper crumpling in her grip. "It's all falling apart. My father… the kingdom…"

"Later," Nami croaked, pushing herself up on trembling elbows. A collective gasp filled the room. "The ship… who's navigating?"

Zoro, leaning against the doorframe with forced calm, grunted. "I am. We're following that cloud bank west. Simple."

Nami's laugh was a painful, wheezing sound. "You idiot… you can't navigate by following a cloud." With a surge of will that seemed to drain the last color from her face, she swung her legs over the bunk. "Help me up. Now. Portside. Hard to south-southeast. Now!"

"Nami, you can't—" Sanji started, but she cut him off with a glare that still held its old fire.

"I'm fine. It's just a chill. The ship isn't."

Luffy, uncharacterically quiet, reached out and placed his bare hand flat on her forehead. There was a faint sizzle. He yanked it back, staring at his reddening palm. "You're burning up," he said, his voice low and serious.

"And you're an idiot with no pain receptors," Nami shot back, swaying as she stood. She clutched Vivi's arm. "Listen to me. The fastest way to Alabasta isn't a straight line. It's by keeping this ship in one piece. We need a doctor. A real one. Find an island. Find me a doctor, then we run for Alabasta."

The order, spoken with the absolute authority of their navigator, cut through the panic. Vivi nodded, tears of frustration and gratitude in her eyes. "Alright. Alright, we find a doctor first."

Guided by Nami's weak but precise directions, Zoro and Usopp wrestled the wheel. The Merry groaned, heeling hard to port. As they cleared a seemingly calm stretch of sea, the water behind them erupted.

A monstrous cyclone, a swirling wall of black cloud and furious water, spun into existence exactly where they would have been. It tore at the sea, a devourer of ships that had been lying in wait.

Vivi stared, open-mouthed, at the cataclysm they had just avoided. "She felt that," she murmured. "Through the fever… she felt the weather holding its breath."

*

A day passed. A tense, silent day where the only sounds were the creak of the ship, the rush of the waves, and Nami's ragged breathing from the cabin. Sanji barely left her side, applying cool cloths and muttering useless apologies to the air.

Zoro, on watch, squinted at the horizon. The light was strange, the sea a flat, metallic gray. And there, in the distance… a speck. He blinked.

"Hey," he called, his voice cutting the quiet. "Is it possible to stand on water?"

Usopp, fiddling with a slingshot, snorted. "What kind of stupid question is that? Of course not. It's a fundamental law of—unless you're a water-strider insect, but they have special feet and—"

"Then how," Zoro interrupted, pointing, "do you explain that?"

Luffy scrambled up beside him. Usopp and Vivi followed. There, perhaps a hundred yards off the starboard bow, a man stood. Not in a boat. Not on debris. His feet were planted firmly on the surface of the ocean as if it were solid marble. He wore a long coat that didn't stir in the breeze.

The stranger tilted his head. His voice carried across the water, clear and conversational. "Bit cold today, isn't it?"

The sheer absurdity of the question, asked by a man defying physics, left them speechless. Luffy, ever literal, rubbed his arms. "Yeah. It is cold."

The man smiled. A thin, unpleasant smile. "Good. Cold is… manageable."

He lifted one foot and stamped down.

The sea at his feet didn't splash. It erupted. Not with water, but with timber, with rigging, with the roaring figurehead of a warship. A massive vessel, painted in grim blacks and blues, rose from the depths as if it had been lurking just beneath the skin of the ocean. It slammed into the surface, surrounding the tiny Going Merry with terrifying speed. From its decks, dozens of armed pirates leered down.

The cabin door banged open. Sanji emerged, his face a storm cloud. He paused, methodically tapping a cigarette against his lighter before bringing it to his lips. The flame flared, illuminating the cold anger in his eyes. "What's the racket?" he asked, his voice deceptively calm.

Luffy didn't take his eyes off the three other ships now emerging around them. "We were ambushed."

"I can see that," Sanji said, exhaling a plume of smoke. "Surrounded by pirates. Obvious." His gaze swept over the hostile fleet, counting. "Where's the rest of your crew?" a booming voice called from the largest ship's rail. The captain, a hulking man with a scarred face and a fur-trimmed coat, scanned the Merry's deck. "A ship this size… you should have more than four. Hiding, are they?"

He leaned forward, his grin revealing gold-capped teeth. "Tell me something, little rabbits… have you ever heard of the Blizzard Brigade?"

As he spoke, the temperature around the Going Merry began to plummet. Frost spiderwebbed across the railings. The very air crystallized with a deadly, beautiful chill. And from the captain's outstretched palms, a swirl of freezing wind and razor-sharp ice began to form, aimed directly at the deck where they stood.

Inside the cabin, wracked by a fever that mimicked the killing cold outside, Nami shivered violently. And on the deck, facing a power that could flash-freeze the sea itself, Luffy clenched his fists, the rubber of his arms stiffening in the sudden, unnatural deep freeze.

The captain laughed, the sound echoing across the ice-flecked waves. "Let's make this simple. Hand over your navigator. We know she's sick. We have a… specialist for that. Refuse…" The vortex of blizzard-force wind and ice in his hands pulsed with lethal light. "…and we'll send your entire crew to a nice, deep, permanent chill."

Sanji's cigarette froze, the ash refusing to fall. Luffy's breath fogged in the arctic air. And high above on the enemy ship, the walking man watched, his expression one of bored anticipation.

They were outnumbered, outgunned, and trapped on a freezing sea. And the price for their lives was the one crewmate who couldn't defend herself.
