Chapter 94 - The Price of a Soul**

The air in Nojiko's tangerine grove was thick, not with the scent of citrus, but with the bitter weight of an eight-year betrayal. Nojiko's voice was a low, steady flame, burning through the Straw Hats' assumptions.

"We thought she'd abandoned us," Nojiko said, her knuckles white around her teacup. "She fought Arlong to take me back, then returned the next day… wearing his mark. A tattoo on her arm. She stood in the village square, gold glittering in her hands, and told us all how easy it was to earn money under his flag."

Sanji's cigarette trembled. "That selfish little…"

"We called her a monster," Nojiko cut in, her gaze distant. "We threw her out. I went to our mother's grave that night, to scream at Bellemere's memory for the daughter she left behind. But Nami was already there."

The flashback unfolded, vivid and cruel.

*The moon was a pale coin over the grave. Nami, just a child still, sat hugging her knees, her new tattoo a violent blue against her skin.*

*"Nojiko," she whispered, her voice raw. "Do you remember what Mom's last wish was?"*

*"To see us live free," Nojiko spat, tears of rage in her eyes.*

*Nami nodded, a single, sharp movement. "Arlong is too strong. To rebel is to die. To die is to fail her." She turned, and her eyes held a depth of horror Nojiko had never seen. "So I made a deal. I draw maps for him. The best maps in the East Blue. And for every map, he pays me. When I have one hundred million Berries… I buy our village back. I buy *us* back."*

Back in the present, Usopp gasped. Sanji's lighter snapped shut with a final click. The gentle snore from the corner where Zoro napped against a tree was a jarring counterpoint to the tension.

"One hundred *million*?" Usopp breathed. "She was just a kid!"

"She *is* just a kid!" Sanji exploded, surging to his feet. "Eight years of that fish-faced tyrant's boot on her neck? I'll sauté every last one of those scaled bastards and feed them to the gulls!"

*Thwack!*

Nojiko's fist connected with the back of Sanji's head, not playful, but punishing. "Fool!" she hissed, her composure shattering. "You think your righteous anger helps? Every time you call her your friend, you paint a target on her back! You make Arlong doubt her loyalty! Eight years of swallowing her pride, of smiling at the men who killed our mother, of counting every single cursed Berry… and you risk it all with a loud mouth!"

Sanji stared, stunned into silence. Nojiko's chest heaved. "She was so close," she whispered, the anger draining into despair. "Just seven million more. A few more maps. A few more lies. The finish line was in sight."

Another memory flashed—Nami, just days ago, in the dead of night, her eyes fever-bright with hope as she showed Nojiko the hidden treasure trove. *"Seven million, Nojiko. Just seven million more and we're free."*

The hopeful memory shattered as Nojiko's narrative snapped back to the present horror.

"While we're sitting here," Nojiko said, her voice dropping to a deathly calm, "Genzo has brought the Marine Captain of the 16th Branch, Nezumi, to her door."

*At Nami's house, the air was cold with institutional menace. Captain Nezumi, a man with the sly eyes of a rat, stood flanked by two stone-faced Marines. Genzo looked on, helpless, his face ashen.*

*"So," Nezumi sneered, looking Nami up and down. "You're the criminal I've heard about. The pirate cartographer."*

*Nami leaned against her doorframe, the perfect picture of insolent allegiance. She forced a smirk. "Guess I am. I work for Arlong. I'm one of his crew. So run along, Captain. Nothing for you here."*

*She played the part, her heart hammering against her ribs. Just a little longer. Just a few more maps.*

*Nezumi's laugh was a dry, rustling sound. He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a confidential murmur that carried like a poison dart. "Arlong? I have no idea what you're talking about, my dear."*

*His eyes glinted, not with ignorance, but with malicious knowledge. He reached into his coat.*

*"I'm here about the ninety-three million Berries of stolen pirate treasure you reported… *missing*."*

Nojiko's story ended. Around the grove, the Straw Hats were frozen statues.

Sanji's cigarette fell, smoldering in the grass. Usopp's jaw hung open. Even Zoro's snoring had ceased, his one visible eye now open and sharp.

Nojiko looked at them, her final words a blade of ice.

"He wasn't there for Arlong. He was there for *her* money. The money for our freedom."

She met Luffy's eyes, which had been dark and unreadable throughout her tale.

"And he took it. Every last Berry."

**In the ringing silence, from the direction of Arlong Park, a single, earth-shattering scream of pure, world-ending anguish tore through the afternoon sky.**
