Chapter 76 - The Fearless Heart

The air on the Baratie's deck tasted of salt, blood, and desperation. Don Krieg, the self-proclaimed "Most Powerful Captain in East Blue," stood panting, his golden armor dented but still intact. Across from him, Monkey D. Luffy bounced lightly on the balls of his feet, a grin stretching across his face despite the blood trickling from his temple.

"You're just a reckless boy," Krieg spat, hefting his massive spiked cape. "You don't understand what true power is."

From the sidelines, his leg still bound, the old chef Zeff watched with hawk-like intensity. Sanji stood beside him, a cigarette dangling from his lips, its tip glowing with his agitation.

"Why isn't he backing off?" Sanji muttered, watching Luffy charge again. "He's exhausted. Krieg's armor is still holding."

Zeff's voice was a low, gravelly rumble that cut through the chaos. "That brat has one weapon Krieg lost a long time ago, boy. The one thing that matters when the sea itself wants to swallow you whole."

"What? His rubber body?"

"No," Zeff said, his eyes never leaving Luffy. "He has no fear of death."

On the battlefield, Krieg roared, swinging his cape in a deadly arc meant to bisect the young pirate. "I'll execute you for your insolence!"

Luffy didn't flinch. He dropped flat, the spikes whistling over his head, then sprang up and wrapped his arms around a broken mast. "Your talking is boring!"

"Sanji," Zeff said, his tone brooking no argument. "Listen well. On a battlefield like this, you must have the principle to not be afraid of death. The second fear enters your heart, you've already lost. That principle… it's burning inside that straw-hatted idiot right now."

Krieg snarled, slicing through the mast Luffy clung to. The wood splintered, but Luffy simply rode the falling timber, unharmed. "Your attacks are too slow!" Luffy laughed.

Enraged, Krieg unleashed a volley of fire from his armor. Luffy hurled the broken mast like a javelin. It was incinerated mid-air, but Luffy was already moving, a blur of red and determination.

"Gomu Gomu No… Gatling!"

His fists became a storm, a relentless barrage pounding against Krieg's golden shell. *Clang! Clang! CLANG!* The sound was deafening, but the armor held.

"Useless!" Krieg bellowed, though the force of the blows drove him back a step.

"Pistol!" Luffy shot a single, powerful fist forward, connecting with a resonant *BOOM* that sent Krieg skidding across the deck. Yet the armor, though deeply dented, refused to shatter.

A mad light entered Krieg's eyes. He scrambled up the main mast, pulling a cluster of spherical bombs from his cloak. "Let's see you dodge this, you rubber freak!"

"Oh no you don't!" Luffy yelled, his legs stretching as he launched himself upward.

"Now, Sanji!" Zeff barked. "Do you see it? The fear in Krieg's eyes? He's terrified of losing. Luffy isn't. That's the difference between surviving and winning."

Luffy reached Krieg as the bombs were primed. He didn't grab for the explosives. Instead, he planted his feet on the mast, coiled his arms impossibly far back, and met Krieg's terrified gaze with unshakable resolve.

"Gomu Gomu No… BAZOOKA!"

The twin palms slammed into the center of the golden armor. For a heartbeat, there was silence. Then, a sound like a mountain cracking—a web of fissures erupted across the legendary armor before it exploded into a thousand glittering shards.

The battlefield fell silent.

Krieg stood exposed, his face a mask of utter disbelief. Behind him, his pirate crew watched in horror, their invincible symbol shattered.

"Im… impossible," one whispered.

Krieg's spirit broke. His knees buckled, but hatred, colder and sharper than any blade, took its place. As Luffy descended from the mast, Krieg's last desperate move was already in motion.

"If I go down… YOU DROWN WITH ME!" he screamed, firing a weighted iron net from his wrist.

It snared Luffy in mid-air, tangling his limbs, and the momentum carried them both over the ship's railing, out above the churning, hungry sea.

A collective gasp ripped through the air. Luffy's eyes went wide—not with fear, but with sudden, terrible understanding. The water yawned beneath him.

"He's a Devil Fruit user!" Sanji cried, stepping forward.

Krieg, dangling from the net's edge, smirked with vicious joy. "That's right! You sink, and I climb this net to safety! My final victory!"

But Luffy's face hardened. Even entangled, one rubbery hand and foot shot out, stretching back toward the ship, aiming for Krieg.

"He's still fighting?" Sanji breathed, stunned.

"He's *winning*," Zeff corrected, a fierce pride in his voice.

Anticipating the move, Krieg yelled to his shell-shocked crew, "SHOOT HIM! NOW!"

A dozen pirates snapped to attention, raising crossbows and flintlocks, aiming at the helpless, dangling Luffy.

"Like hell!" Sanji snarled, a lifetime of neutrality burning away in an instant. He became a whirlwind of kicks, disarming the nearest gunners in a blur of motion.

In that moment of distraction, Luffy took his shot. His free limbs retracted like loaded springs.

"GOMU GOMU NO… TSUCHI!"

The hammer-blow of his fist connected squarely with Don Krieg's sneering face. The impact was sickeningly solid. The smirk vanished, replaced by vacant eyes as consciousness fled. Krieg went limp.

But the net tore.

Luffy, his final attack spent, now fell alone, a tangled bundle of rubber and straw hat, plummeting toward the deep blue abyss that was his absolute weakness. He didn't scream. He just looked up at the sky, his mission complete.

Sanji watched, horror-struck, as his savior fell to a death that seemed certain. "He… he won. But he's going to die?"

Zeff placed a heavy hand on his shoulder, his voice thick with an emotion the old pirate rarely showed. "That's why he won, eggplant. He fought a man who wanted to survive, and he fought a man who was willing to *die* to protect his dream. The sea doesn't grant victories to the former."

As Luffy hit the water with a quiet splash and immediately began to sink beneath the waves, Zeff finished, his words hanging in the air like a verdict.

"Remember this, cook. The man who isn't afraid to lose his life… is the most dangerous man on earth."

And below, in the silent, sinking dark, Luffy's outstretched hand finally stopped moving, his hat drifting away from his fading grasp.
