Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: Partially contracted

Arthur's hand touched the husky, and for a second, nothing happened.

Then something pushed back.

Not physically. It was like something pressed against his mind, slow and heavy, not trying to hurt him, just… there. Like it was checking him. Measuring.

He almost pulled away. Instinct more than fear.

The pressure stayed, and after a moment it shifted, like whatever it was had noticed he hadn't backed off.

The system flickered into view, not as clean as before.

[Warning: Contract Interference Detected]

[Bloodline Authority Conflict — Unknown]

Arthur frowned slightly. "Bloodline Authority?"

It didn't feel like a fight. It felt like he was being looked at.

The weight increased a little. Not enough to overwhelm him, just enough that if he hesitated, it would probably end him then and there.

He let out a slow breath. He stood up and held himself steady. He didn't even think about it. Just didn't move.

Something changed after that.

The pressure didn't go away, but it stopped pushing. It started… searching. Moving through his thoughts instead of pressing against them, like it was trying to find something specific.

Arthur didn't resist it. Didn't try to force anything either. He just stayed there.

After a few seconds, he saw something.

Not clearly. Just a shape. Too big to make sense of. Eyes, maybe. Watching from somewhere far away.

It didn't feel hostile.

Just… old.

The system glitched again.

[Fenrir Bloodline — Dormant][Synchronization Failed][Retry?]

Arthur exhaled through his nose, a little annoyed at the wording more than anything else.

"Failed?"

He shook his head slightly.

"…again."

This time he leaned into it instead of just holding on.

The reaction was different. The pressure didn't increase. It adjusted. Like it had switched from testing strength to something else entirely.

Arthur didn't try to understand it. He just stayed steady.

After a while, something gave.

Not suddenly. Just enough.

The weight settled instead of pushing, and for a brief second he saw more of it. A shape, massive, something that made the husky in front of him feel like it didn't matter at all.

Then it was gone.

Everything snapped back.

Arthur stumbled half a step but caught himself. The tree, the ground, the quiet hum of the boundary all came back at once.

The husky was still there, looking at him.

The system stabilized.

Name: Unnamed Variant

Rank: Rookie

Bloodline: Fenrir (Dormant — Bound)

Potential: ???

Taming Status: Partial Contract Established

Arthur stared at the last line.

"partial???"

The husky stood up and walked closer, stopping right in front of him like nothing strange had just happened.

The system flickered again.

[Contract Stability: Incomplete]

[Bond Recognition Pending]

Arthur let out a breath and rubbed the back of his neck.

"So we're not done."

The husky just looked at him.

Up close, it didn't look special at all. No strange features, nothing that hinted at whatever he had just seen. Just a normal dog.

But it didn't feel normal.

Arthur hesitated for a second, then raised his hand again, slower this time.

Not grabbing. Just offering.

The husky didn't move at first.

Then it stepped forward slightly and pressed its head against his hand.

That was it.

No pressure. No resistance.

Just simple contact.

The system updated immediately.

[Synchronization Achieved]

[Contract Established]

Arthur exhaled, shoulders relaxing a little.

"Phew."

It didn't feel dramatic. No sudden rush, no explosion of power. Just something settling quietly in the back of his mind, like a second presence that wasn't trying to take over.

It was a crystalized drop of blood, flashing red instead of the regular crimson hue a beast master would typically find.

The husky stepped back and turned, already walking forward like the whole thing hadn't been a big deal.

Arthur glanced at the system again.

Same rank. Same unknown potential. Nothing changed on the surface.

"You're hiding something," he muttered.

The husky didn't react. He only kept moving forward, atopping to make sure Arthur was tailing him.

Arthur walked for a while after forming the contract, following the same slow pace as before, letting things settle. The husky stayed a few steps ahead, moving like it had already decided where it was going. Arthur didn't question it. There wasn't much point.

At first, everything felt normal. Same ground under his feet, same air, same quiet tension sitting in the back of his mind from being outside the walls. If anything, he expected something more obvious. A surge of strength, maybe. Something he could point to and say, yeah, that's different.

Instead, it took him a few minutes to realize something was off.

It started small. The way his foot landed on uneven ground didn't feel awkward. Normally he would have adjusted halfway through the step, correcting himself after he felt the imbalance. This time it didn't happen. His body just… placed it right the first time.

He slowed down without really thinking about it and paid attention to the next step.

Same thing.

No correction. No hesitation.

Just right.

Arthur frowned slightly and kept walking, this time watching more carefully. A patch of loose soil came up ahead, the kind that usually shifted under your weight. He stepped onto it, expecting that slight slide, the instinctive adjustment that followed.

Nothing.

His balance held without effort, like his body had already accounted for it before he even touched the ground.

"…okay."

He didn't stop, but he didn't ignore it either.

The husky glanced back at him once, then kept moving.

Arthur looked down at his hands, flexed his fingers once, then shook his head and focused forward again. If something had changed, it wasn't obvious on the surface.

The system flickered into view, quiet as always.
