The National Tech Headquarters was a monolith of glass and steel under the moonlight. The "Seven Stars" moved in perfect synchronization—a dance we had practiced since the Annual Days of high school.
"Comm check," Su Lan's voice crackled in my earpiece. "I'm in the van. I've looped the security cameras for the next three minutes. Move now."
Li Yan and I slipped through the side entrance. The air inside was sterile and cold. We reached the elevator.
12... 13... 14.
The doors opened to a hallway of pulsing blue lights. My heart was a drum in my chest.
"Xiao Xing," Li Yan whispered, grabbing my hand as we reached the biometric vault. "If we get caught, I take the fall. I'll say I forced you to help me. You keep your record clean."
"No," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "We're a set, remember? We win together or we crash together."
He looked at me, and for a second, the "Robot" disappeared. He leaned in and kissed my forehead—a soft, lingering promise. "Then let's not crash."
He pressed his eye to the scanner. Access Granted.
We burst into the server room. The hum of the machines was deafening. I found the terminal for the 'Blue-Pulse' project. My fingers flew across the keys.
"Wait," I gasped. "The file... it's been modified. Ying Yue didn't just steal it; she's added a 'Kill Switch.' If I download the original, it deletes the entire Institute database."
"She's framing you for sabotage," Li Yan hissed, leaning over my shoulder. "If you take it, you're a criminal."
Suddenly, the lights in the server room turned blood-red. A siren began to wail.
"Intruder Alert," a mechanical voice boomed.
The heavy steel doors began to slide shut.
"GO!" I screamed, pushing Li Yan toward the gap.
"Not without you!"
I looked at the screen. The download was at 82%. I had to choose: my career, or our freedom.
"Li Yan, the 'Seven Stars' don't leave anyone behind!" Zhang Wei's voice came through the comms. "The back elevator is jammed! Use the ventilation shaft! NOW!"
I grabbed the encrypted drive just as the download hit 100%, and we dove through the closing doors, tumbling into the dark hallway just as the heavy locks clicked shut.
"We got it," I panted, clutching the drive to my chest. "We got the proof."
"But we're trapped," Li Yan said, looking at the security team rounding the corner, batons drawn.
I stood up, falling into my karate stance, the silver medal swinging around my neck. "Then I guess it's time for a live demonstration of my 'aggressive' coding style."
