CHAPTER SIX: THE GIRL WHO SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHED
No one moved.
Not the pack.
Not the enemy.
Not even the wind.
Everything in the clearing bent toward her.
Lyra stood at the center of it all, her silver eyes glowing faintly, her breathing calm—too calm for someone who had just shattered control over an entire battlefield.
Kael felt it.
That shift.
That terrifying, undeniable truth.
She wasn't just powerful.
She was becoming inevitable.
"Lyra," he said carefully, his voice low but firm. "Look at me."
Her gaze slid to him slowly.
And for a moment—
Just a moment—
He saw her again.
The girl.
Not the thing.
But it didn't last.
"You're bleeding," she said softly.
Kael clenched his jaw. "It's nothing."
Her head tilted slightly.
"You always lie about that."
The words hit harder than they should have.
Because again—
It sounded like memory.
Not observation.
"Stay where you are," Kael ordered, taking a step forward. "Don't use your power again."
A pause.
Then—
Lyra smiled.
Not cruel.
Not kind.
Knowing.
"And if I don't?" she asked quietly.
The bond between them tightened.
Sharp.
Unforgiving.
Kael stopped.
"Then I'll stop you."
The clearing held its breath.
Lyra studied him.
Long.
Carefully.
Then she took another step forward.
The ground cracked again beneath her feet.
Darius moved instantly.
He stepped between them.
"Enough," he said sharply. "She's unstable."
Kael's eyes snapped to him.
"Move."
Darius didn't.
For the first time since Kael became Alpha—
Someone defied him.
"She just took down an entire force without shifting," Darius continued, his voice controlled. "That's not power we can contain. That's power we eliminate."
The word echoed.
Eliminate.
Lyra went still.
Not reacting outwardly—
But something inside her shifted.
Darkened.
"You want to kill me," she said softly.
Darius didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
The honesty was brutal.
The air dropped.
Kael stepped forward, his voice turning deadly.
"You don't make that decision."
Darius's gaze flickered—just slightly.
"But you won't," he said.
Silence.
Because that—
Was the truth.
Kael hadn't killed her.
Not before.
Not now.
And Darius knew it.
Suddenly—
One of the gray-eyed wolves twitched.
Then another.
The man Lyra had dropped began to laugh weakly from the ground.
"You think it's over?" he rasped.
Lyra turned slowly.
Her eyes sharpened.
"No," she said quietly. "I think you're still breathing."
She lifted her hand again—
"WAIT!"
The voice cut through everything.
Sharp.
Female.
Powerful.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood at the edge of the clearing.
Dark cloak.
Pale skin.
Eyes that reflected the moonlight like glass.
She didn't belong to the pack.
But she wasn't afraid.
"Touch him again," she said calmly, "and you'll trigger something none of you can stop."
Lyra stilled.
Her gaze locked onto the woman.
And for the first time—
Something like recognition flickered.
"You…" Lyra whispered.
The woman stepped forward slowly.
"Yes," she said softly. "Me."
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"Who are you?"
The woman didn't look at him.
Her attention remained fixed on Lyra.
"Someone who knows what she is becoming."
Darius tensed.
Kael noticed.
Interesting.
"Speak," Kael demanded.
The woman finally turned her gaze to him.
"Selene," she said simply.
The name meant nothing to most.
But not to Darius.
Kael saw it.
That flicker again.
That tension.
"Witch," Darius muttered under his breath.
Selene smiled faintly.
"I prefer keeper of truths, but yes… witch will do."
Lyra stepped forward slowly.
Drawn.
"Why do I know you?" she asked.
Selene's expression softened.
"Because," she said quietly, "I'm the only one who ever tried to save you."
The words landed heavily.
Kael's gaze snapped to Lyra.
"You've met her before?" he asked.
Lyra shook her head slightly.
"No… but…"
Her chest tightened.
Images flickered—
Fire.
Blood.
A woman screaming—
Selene.
Lyra staggered slightly.
"She lied to you," Selene added calmly.
Kael stiffened.
"Who?"
Selene's gaze slid—slowly—to Darius.
Silence.
Heavy.
Deadly.
Darius didn't react.
Didn't move.
Didn't speak.
But the air shifted.
Kael felt it instantly.
"Explain," Kael said, his voice dropping dangerously low.
Selene didn't rush.
Didn't hesitate.
"He knew she was here before you did," she said.
The world seemed to tilt.
Kael turned slowly.
"Darius."
Darius met his gaze.
Calm.
Steady.
"Is that true?"
A pause.
Then—
Darius exhaled slowly.
"Yes."
The word hit harder than any attack.
The pack stirred.
Confused.
Angry.
"You let them in," Kael said.
Not a question.
Darius didn't deny it.
"I opened the border," he admitted.
Growls erupted.
"Why?" Kael demanded.
Darius's expression darkened.
"Because you wouldn't do what needed to be done."
Lyra's breath caught.
"You mean kill me," she whispered.
Darius looked at her.
And for the first time—
There was something almost… regretful in his eyes.
"You don't understand what you are," he said.
Lyra's voice trembled slightly.
"Then explain it to me."
Darius shook his head.
"No," he said quietly. "Because if you truly understood…"
He stepped back.
"You would beg me to finish it."
Silence crashed over the clearing.
Kael's voice turned deadly.
"You betrayed your Alpha."
Darius didn't flinch.
"I protected my pack."
The two men stood facing each other.
Brothers.
Now enemies.
And in between them—
Lyra.
The reason.
The weapon.
The end.
Selene stepped closer to Lyra, her voice softer now.
"You need to come with me," she said.
Kael's head snapped toward her.
"No."
Immediate.
Final.
Selene raised a brow.
"If she stays here," she said calmly, "she will lose control."
Lyra swallowed hard.
"She's right," she whispered.
Kael turned to her sharply.
"You're not leaving."
Their eyes locked.
The bond tightened again.
Painfully.
"You don't trust me," Lyra said.
Kael's jaw clenched.
"I don't trust what's inside you."
The words cut.
Lyra flinched slightly.
Then—
Her expression changed.
Hardened.
"Then maybe," she said quietly, "you should have killed me when you had the chance."
Silence.
That same sentence.
That same echo.
Kael stepped closer.
"I tried," he said.
Lyra's breath hitched.
Because this time—
He didn't deny it.
He confirmed it.
And something inside her—
Broke.
Or awakened.
No one knew which.
