Chapter 6 - Forks High School/Mate Bond

[Wouldn't usually upload this soon, but I was overcome with a want to write this evening, so I made two chapters.

I may have gotten a little out of hand with Niklaus's reaction to Alice, but I put an explanation at the bottom of the chapter for that.

I hope you enjoy the new surprise chapter :)]

-----------------------

"Dad, hurry up! We're going to be late if you take any longer!" Freya called from the top of the stairs.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm coming now."

It had been a week since Niklaus's meeting with Carlisle. They hadn't met any other members of the coven, nor had they run into any of the Quileute tribe.

The delivery of blood was also running smoothly. They would receive a delivery every week and would store it in a large freezer in their kitchen.

Niklaus and Freya have only been out hunting once, and it was mostly for fun rather than for food.

Niklaus arrived at the front door to meet his daughter's stern gaze.

He was wearing black cargo pants, a dark grey V-neck t-shirt, a dark brown bomber jacket, and black Timberland boots. He also wore a necklace with a large tooth attached to the end. It was taken from the first werewolf he killed, and he has kept it for centuries.

Freya wore navy blue jeans, a white t-shirt, a black leather jacket layered over it, and a pair of black-and-white Converse sneakers.

Freya waited by the door, tapping her foot, while waiting for Niklaus to arrive. Once he finally did, he walked past her to the garage, ignoring her stare entirely.

All his dignity as a father would be lost if his daughter started scolding him.

"We still have plenty of time, there's no need to stress about it. If we drive faster, then we won't be late."

As they reached the garage, they stopped for a moment. While Niklaus's choice of the R34 was obvious, Freya took a second to decide whether to ride with her father or drive her own car.

After a moment of contemplation, she decided to go with Niklaus for the day. She couldn't think of a reason why they wouldn't be heading home together, and even if they did split up, she could just run home.

They both got into the car and pulled out of the driveway, heading towards the school while the radio played in the background.

-----------------------

Forks High School

The blue Nissan pulled into the school parking lot. Niklaus parked as far away from the school as possible. He didn't trust a group of teenagers not to hit his car on the way past.

The school looked...depressing. It was entirely made out of plain brick and, with the grey sky as a backdrop, it made him tired just looking at it.

There was barely anyone at the school by this time. The vampire duo had arrived rather early, due to Niklaus's incredibly illegal driving tendencies.

The two ignored any humans that were looking their way and walked straight inside to find the office. They had to get their timetables ready for their first class.

Roughly 15 minutes after they arrived, a grey Volvo and a red Mercedes entered, followed by an old orange truck a few minutes later.

-----------------------

After arriving at the office, Niklaus knocked slightly on the main desk to get the attention of the counsellor.

He spoke after she looked up at him. "Hello. My name is Niklaus, and this is my sister Freya. We're new students here. We were told to come and see you."

She had a slight look of recognition in her eye as she stood up. "Ah! Of course, we heard about the new students all joining today. Just give me a second to get your files."

She walked to a filing cabinet by the wall, rummaging through it for a moment before pulling out two folders.

"Here we are. Niklaus and Freya Shadowborn. That's not a name you hear everyday."

"Yes, we get that a lot. We're European."

"I see, well here are your schedules. You have world history first while your sister has calculus. Here's two maps so neither of you get lost. Do feel free to come here during the day if you need help with anything."

Niklaus took both schedules and maps with a grateful smile. "Thank you, however I believe we'll manage just fine."

After walking out of the office and handing Freya her timetable and map, Niklaus pocketed his own.

"It seems we won't be together until 3rd period. I'll meet you there."

Freya nodded, before a strange feeling came over her and she turned to say, "Try not to kill anyone just because you don't like them."

Niklaus's hand shot up towards his heart with a pained expression that was very clearly fake.

"You wound me, dear. You should try and have a little faith, no?"

Freya just shook her head with a smile and walked off towards her first class. Niklaus looked for the room he needed for a moment before leaving for his history 'class'. For someone who has lived through all of recorded history, this seemed like an ideal time to relax.

-----------------------

Niklaus reached his classroom. As he walked inside, he noticed that most students were already there. Fortunately, the class had not yet started.

The teacher looked up at Niklaus as the sound of him entering spread throughout the room, drawing the gaze of most students.

His eyes twitched slightly with irritation before settling again.

"Hello, I'm a new student, my name is Niklaus. It's a pleasure."

The teacher's eyes widened slightly before he replied, "Ah, of course. Welcome. For now, take the empty seat at the back next to mister Cullen."

Niklaus spotted the seat and walked towards it. As he made his way down the room, he took a look at his new seatmate for the foreseeable future.

The boy was somewhat tall, about the same height as Niklaus himself. He had bronze hair and golden eyes. Niklaus had already identified him as a vampire by his name, but the lack of heartbeat solidified that discovery for him.

The boy sat near the window, gazing out of it. His eyes seemed detached from the room, and gave off a slightly haughty look when he looked towards his classmates.

His whole demeanour made a single word appear in Niklaus's mind.

'Chuunibyou'

He instantly abandoned the thought of talking to this boy. It didn't seem like something he was going to enjoy anyway.

Just like that, Niklaus and Edward spent an entire hour next to each other in complete silence. Edward brooding the whole time, while Niklaus was reminiscing whichever topic the teacher brought up.

-----------------------

When third period finally came around, Niklaus and Freya reunited. Freya seemed completely fine, while Niklaus looked like he was one step away from killing the next person who annoyed him.

First period was spent next to the school's local emo, and in the second period he had the misfortune of sitting next to the generic 'popular' girl, Jessica. That girl needed to learn how to shut up.

They were told to sit at an empty table at the back of the room. They both breathed a slight sigh of relief at being away from people who seemed to have nothing better to do other than try and get involved in others lives.

Finally able to just relax, they both spent the lesson making small talk before lunch hour arrived.

-----------------------

Cafeteria

Cullens POV

The Cullens family had already arrived at sat down at their table, drawing the attention of everyone in the room. Alice had insisted on Edward walking in last, probably to try and show off in front of his mate. Unfortunately, they were too early to see Niklaus and Freya just yet.

Alice was practically vibrating with excitement. Jasper was slightly apprehensive. Edward was just staring at the unfortunate new brunette student.

Emmet spoke up first, breaking the silence. "So, have any of you met your mates yet?" He paused for a moment while glancing at Edward. "Staring them down doesn't count."

Alice and Jasper both shook their heads while Edward finally looked back towards the table.

"I met one of them. Niklaus. We had a history class together."

Alice perked up at that, looking intently at Edward, waiting for him to continue.

Unfortunately for her, it seemed he was done talking and just went back to staring at his mate, not that he would ever call her that.

Fortunately, as Edward stopped talking, the object of her thoughts for the past week walked through the door, along with Jasper's mate at his side.

-----------------------

Niklaus was irritated yet again. They were on their way to the cafeteria when some self-proclaimed school reporter stood in their path. He even had the gall to flirt with Freya, right in front of him no less.

Niklaus eventually managed to get rid of him by staring intently at him until the boy finally couldn't take the awkwardness and left.

He couldn't stand people flirting with his daughter. Even if she met her mate, he would still be hesitant about letting his baby girl go, let alone any random teenage boy.

As they approached the doors, both Niklaus and Freya felt a strange sense of anticipation well up in their chests. Neither of them could figure out why, but it was undoubtably there.

After realising that there was literally nothing they could do about it, they pressed on and entered the room anyway.

-----------------------

The Cullens looked up towards the new arrivals. They were certainly eye-catching. Just their hair colour alone would attract attention, plus those vivid red eyes that they both possessed. Their eyes seemed to actually glow as they entered the room.

Not to mention their looks. Vampires were naturally beautiful, but these two took it to a whole other level. It was like someone had designed them by hand, and taken things a little too far. Even the male of the two. Despite having half of his face covered, still attracted the attention of most of the girls in the room.

Alice and Jasper both felt a sense of irritation build inside of them. These were their mates. Mates they had not even met yet and all these people were already staring at them with barely concealed attraction, while some were openly gawking.

As they were dealing with their irritation, the pair had already taken a seat on an empty table, the atmosphere practically daring people to try and sit with them.

Before Alice and Jasper could do anything, their world narrowed to a single point as the pair of newcomers looked towards them and made eye contact.

-----------------------

The father-daughter pair completely ignored anyone that tried to speak to them. After they found a table to sit at, Niklaus sent out subtle waves of killing intent towards anyone that even moved in their general direction. Not enough to cause any problems for the humans, but enough for them to naturally want to stay away. When he was satisfied with their distance, he began to survey the room, along with Freya. They already knew there were vampires here, so they wanted to get a physical appearance to know what to watch out for.

They found who they were looking for on the other side of the room.

Niklaus first spotted the brooding emo he had sat next to during his first period. The boy was staring intently at the other newest addition to the school. 'A mate? Or maybe just planning his next meal? For a vampire to stare that intently at a human she's gotta be either his mate or his blood singer.'

Next to the emo, he spotted a large, dark haired boy sat next to a blonde woman. The two were obviously a couple. 'I wonder how they explain that when they are supposed to be siblings' Niklaus thought idly.

Still, there was something about the blonde that was bugging him. She was undeniably beautiful, but there was a trace of something else, something almost artificial.

'A gift,' he thought after a moment. 'What a useless power to have.' Niklaus saw no use in extra beauty for a vampire. If a gift had no visible value, it was practically worthless in his eyes. Still, having one is still better than not having one, even if it is slightly pointless.

Next to the woman he saw another man. He should be slightly taller than Niklaus, with wavy, honey blonde hair. He was also looking towards Freya with a strange look in his eye. Strangely, Niklaus didn't feel the same overwhelming protectiveness he does when other boys have looked at his daughter. That would have to be something he looked into.

Finally, his gaze moved towards the last occupant of the table. The moment he saw her, his entire world froze. Had he still been human, his heart would've skipped a beat and his breathing would've been completely forgotten.

'A mate bond?'

He knew exactly what this was the moment he saw her. He had met many vampires who had found their mates, and he knew what that meant, how it should feel.

But this?

Nobody ever warned him it would be this strong. Had he been any younger, with even a tiny bit less self-restraint, he would've completely disregarded the humans in the room and instantly appeared by her side.

It was like finding the final, missing piece to a puzzle you didn't even know was incomplete.

He noticed his daughter have a similar, albeit less intense, reaction to the blonde boy. Ordinarily, he would take a moment to ask her about it, but he just couldn't bring himself to take his eyes off of the beautiful angel across the room.

After a few seconds, which felt like an eternity to Niklaus, she finally turned and locked eyes with him.

When she did, she gave the most radiant, captivating smile he had ever seen. He hadn't even met her properly and was already prepared to offer her the world just to keep seeing that perfect smile.

-----------------------

The moment the four of them locked eyes, Jasper felt a huge wave of emotions hit him at once. It was so strong that he almost lost himself for a moment.

When his mate looked at him, he saw confusion, then recognition, and finally happiness and anticipation. Along with that, he could already feel the bond between them grow immensely.

A mate bond is mostly a suggestion for people. While it matches you with your ideal partner, it still needs the consent of both parties in order to grow. Naturally, most vampires don't reject the mate bond. Who would ever turn down their ideal partner in favour of someone else?

While Jasper was happy that his mate had agreed to the bond so quickly, the wave of emotion he felt from Alice and her mate nearly knocked him off of his chair. If the rest of the room was like a raging river, then just these two alone were like a huge tidal wave.

From Alice, the excitement and pure joy she gave off seemed far too strong to even be possible for him. Niklaus, on the other hand, was a whole different problem for Jasper to deal with.

His emotions had the same impossible intensity, but the variety was also completely taking over Jasper's senses.

Recognition, anticipation, awe, admiration, desire, longing, appreciation, disbelief, acceptance, obsession, possessiveness, and pure, unbridled joy.

Edward, unfortunately for him, caught Jasper's thoughts just as he was trying to deal with his emotions. The boy physically faltered before cutting off the connection again with wide eyes, catching both Rosalie and Emmett off guard.

Alice, on the other hand, smiled even more brightly whilst her happiness shone clearly through her eyes. She had already known that he was her mate, but to feel the bond at this intensity completely surpassed her expectations.

Strength like this only meant that the two were literally perfect for each other, evident by their instant, subconscious acceptance of the bond the moment they saw each other.

She couldn't wait to finally talk to him after 20 years of waiting.

-----------------------

Back with the duo, Freya had only taken a moment to realise what was happening. Her father had explained every aspect of the supernatural world to her, including the mate bond. At the time, he had only told her that she would know when she felt it.

It caught her slightly off guard, but she had quickly accepted it and looked forward to getting to know her mate better.

What truly caught her off guard was her father's reaction. She saw his eyes visibly widen under his hair until his irises were barely even visible. When she followed his eyes, she saw the beautiful woman that was currently locked in eye-contact with him.

She smirked slightly at the realisation. Her father always prided himself on keeping his reactions hidden. Something like this could be held over him for years.

She also felt extremely happy. Her father had been lonely for as long as she had known him. Even when she was there, there was always a sense of something missing from him.

She would have to do everything she could to make sure these two get together, the sooner the better.
