Chapter 26 - Episode 26 — Eyes in the Sky

The first sign was subtle.

Birds stopped crossing the western horizon.

Flocks that once traced lazy arcs above the plains now veered sharply eastward as if avoiding unseen currents. Shepherds reported livestock refusing to graze near open fields. Even the air felt different, heavier in ways that did not match weather.

Ren stood atop the watchtower overlooking the western plains as dusk settled.

Lyra joined him without announcement.

"You feel it again," she said.

"Yes."

"It is closer."

Ren nodded.

Above the horizon, faint distortions shimmered high in the sky. They did not resemble ruptures. They resembled thin cracks in glass, barely visible unless light struck at the right angle.

"They are not tearing through," Lyra whispered.

"They are observing," Ren replied.

As if in answer, one of the distortions brightened briefly.

Within it, a shape formed.

Not fully through.

Not fully beyond.

Watching.

Ren's pulse steadied rather than quickened. Fear would not help.

Lyra's voice lowered. "If they can manifest without rupture—"

"Then the veil is thinning in ways we do not fully understand."

The luminous intelligence stirred faintly at the edge of Ren's perception, distant but present.

Another distortion brightened.

Then another.

Not chaotic.

Organized.

A pattern forming across the sky.

Ren understood the implication immediately.

The darker faction was not attempting brute force entry anymore.

It was studying.

Mapping.

Learning the rhythm of convergence.

Lyra's jaw tightened. "If they learn to bypass rupture entirely—"

"They will not need storms," Ren finished.

Below them, Aeralis continued its evening routines, unaware of the eyes gathering above.

Ren placed his hand against the tower's stone.

"We build the western convergence," he said quietly.

Lyra did not argue.

As the final light of dusk faded, one distortion flared brighter than the rest.

And within it, something moved with unmistakable intent.

This time, it did not retreat.

It leaned closer.
