Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Crimson Altar and the Ancient Oath

The rhythmic tolling of the temple bell shattered the forest's silence, resonating deep within Leonardo's chest. Every strike seemed to agitate the 'Chaos Essence' coursing through his veins. The three blue moons stood directly overhead, their light filtering through the twisted canopy to create strange, geometric patterns upon the forest floor.

Leonardo noticed that the further he ventured, the more distorted the trees became. Their branches were white and curved, resembling bleached human bones. Not a single leaf remained; instead, a faint silvery mist clung to everything.

[Warning: High Mana Concentration detected.] [Entering the Zone: The Altar of Silence.]

Suddenly, the dense woods gave way to a vast, open courtyard. In the center stood a crumbling stone temple. Its architecture was unlike any civilization on Earth; its pillars appeared to be crafted from the massive ribcages of dragons. Standing at the temple's entrance were two stone statues, gripping gargantuan maces in their hands.

As Leonardo set foot on the temple stairs, the transparent screen flickered to life once more.

[Current Objective: Reach the Altar before Dawn.] [Time remaining: 02 hours 15 minutes.]

Upon entering, a heavy scent hit his nostrils—a mixture of ancient blood and ritual incense. Torches along the hall ignited spontaneously, but the flames were not red; they were a deep, haunting violet. At the far end of the hall stood an elevated altar, emitting a soft blue radiance from a jagged stone fragment.

"Halt, Mortal."

A thunderous voice crashed through the hall. Leonardo watched as the two stone statues rumbled to life, blue flames erupting from their empty eye sockets. They slammed their massive maces onto the floor, blocking his path.

[Enemy Identified: Gatekeepers of the Void.] [Level: 40 (Elite)]

Level 40 Elite enemies! Leonardo tightened his grip on his black crystal blade. The 'Chaos Mode' within him surged back to life. He could feel his shadows twitching restlessly across the floor.

"I am no mortal," Leonardo replied, his voice cold and steady. "I am the shadow that you fear."

The two guardians roared in unison, swinging their maces toward him. The stone floor turned to dust under the impact, but Leonardo was no longer there. He used 'Shadow Dash', soaring over their heads toward the altar. But the guardians were not slow; they lunged into the air, reaching out with stony hands to crush him.

Leonardo spun his blade and bellowed, "Shadow Scythe!"

A massive crescent of dark energy erupted from his sword, severing the arm of one guardian. To his surprise, no blood spilled. Instead, even more black smoke billowed from the wound.

[Chaos Essence integration: 15%...]

The battle was brutal. Every blow from the guardians was lethal. Several gashes opened across Leonardo's body, but he watched in amazement as black mist filled the wounds before blood could even flow. He was no longer a mere human; he was a being forged of shadow.

After a grueling struggle, Leonardo made his final move. Gathering all his energy into the tip of his blade, he struck the ground directly beneath the altar. The entire temple shook as shadows spread across the floor like a web, entangling the two guardians and pinning them down.

"End now!" Leonardo plunged his blade into the space between their chests.

The guardians shrieked as they disintegrated into piles of dust. A congratulatory message flashed across the system screen:

[Elite Enemies Defeated: Chaos Essence Absorbed.] [Level: Null (Evolution in progress...)]

Panting heavily, Leonardo stood before the crimson altar. Upon it lay an ancient leather-bound book and a ring carved from bone. As his fingers brushed the ring, thousands of memories flashed through his mind. He saw an ancient war where the three moons were the source of human power. He saw a betrayal—the very reason this System had been created to imprison humanity.

[Hidden Quest Unlocked: The Truth of the Three Moons.] [New Title Obtained: Shadow King Initiate.]

Suddenly, the light of the three moons beamed through the temple roof, striking the altar directly. Leonardo felt an unimaginable transformation. His skin grew more luminous, and his pupils turned a permanent, glowing violet. He realized he was no longer just a player in the System. He was now a stakeholder in this world.

As he slid the ring onto his finger, the temple trembled. The inscriptions on the walls shifted, transforming into a language he could finally understand. It read:

"He who embraces the shadow shall unveil the secrets of the moons. But remember, the brighter the light, the deeper the shadow."

Leonardo looked out from the temple and saw the first rays of dawn beginning to break. But the light no longer burned him. He was now the King of Shadows, one who could rule even the light.

He descended the temple stairs. Before him lay a vast valley, at the end of which stood a shimmering silver city. That was likely his next destination—the place where the System's controllers resided.

"I will destroy the prison you have built," Leonardo swore, looking toward the horizon.
