Chapter 6 - NO WAY TO WALK AWAY

Alina decided she was done thinking about him.

That was her decision.

Simple. Final. Necessary.

Because life had to return to normal.

She had work. Responsibilities. A future that did not include a mysterious man who appeared in the rain and disappeared like a warning.

So she did what she always did when she needed control again—

She got busy.

She accepted invitations she would normally decline.

She stayed longer at work.

She filled every quiet moment with something anything else.

And for a while… it worked.

At least, she convinced herself it did.

Until that evening.

The invitation was harmless enough.

A professional networking event. Elegant venue. Soft music. People dressed in confidence and ambition.

Alina almost didn't go.

Almost.

But something in her refused to stay home again, stuck in thoughts she had sworn she was done entertaining.

So she went.

A black dress. Simple makeup. Composed smile.

The version of herself that felt safest.

Controlled.

Untouchable.

The hall was filled with conversation and clinking glasses. Warm lights reflected off polished floors. Everything felt polished. Intentional.

Alina exhaled slowly, adjusting her dress as she stepped inside.

"This is fine," she told herself quietly.

Just a night.

Just people.

Just distraction.

She took a glass from a passing waiter and turned slightly And that was when everything stopped.

Not the room.

Not the music.

Her.

Because across the hall, partially turned as he spoke to someone beside him

Lucien stood.

And it felt like the air had shifted.

Alina's fingers tightened slightly around the glass.

"No…" she whispered under her breath.

But it was him.

Same presence.

Same calm confidence.

Same quiet dominance over space without even trying.

Except this time he wasn't in shadows or rain.

He was in her world.

And that made it worse.

Lucien turned slightly And his eyes found hers instantly.

No searching.

No hesitation.

Like he had known she would be there.

Alina didn't move.

Couldn't.

For a brief moment, the entire room blurred.

Only him.

Only that look.

Only the memory of everything she had tried so hard to forget.

Then

A faint shift in his expression.

Recognition.

Then something quieter.

Something like… inevitability.

He excused himself from the conversation and began walking toward her.

Slow.

Unhurried.

Like time wasn't something that applied to him.

Alina's breath hitched.

She should leave.

Right now.

Before he got closer.

Before this became real again.

But her feet didn't move.

Not even when he stopped right in front of her.

Close enough that she could feel his presence again like a pull she had no defense against.

"Alina," he said softly.

Her name.

Again.

Like it belonged to him more than her.

Her throat tightened slightly.

"You're not supposed to be here," she said quietly.

A faint, knowing look passed through his eyes.

"And yet," he replied, "so are you."

Silence.

Heavy. Immediate. Familiar.

Alina swallowed.

"I was trying to move on," she said before she could stop herself.

The words slipped out honest, unguarded.

Something flickered in his gaze.

Not amusement.

Not surprise.

Interest.

"Were you?" he asked softly.

A beat.

Then

He stepped just a little closer.

Not enough to touch.

But enough to remind her of everything her body already remembered.

"I was beginning to think you'd pretend I didn't exist," he added.

Her chest tightened.

"I was trying," she admitted.

That earned the faintest shift in his expression.

Something deeper now.

"Trying," he repeated quietly.

Like he was tasting the word.

Alina exhaled slowly, forcing herself to hold his gaze.

"This is not the place for this," she said.

Lucien glanced briefly around the room.

People. Noise. Movement.

Then back to her.

"It never is," he said.

A pause.

Then, softer

"But you still feel it."

Her breath caught.

That was the problem.

She did.

And he knew it.

Alina opened her mouth to respond but stopped.

Because suddenly

A voice called his name from across the room.

Lucien's attention shifted briefly, just for a second.

But it was enough.

Enough for Alina to realize something worse.

He wasn't alone here.

He belonged here.

This wasn't a coincidence.

This was his world too.

And she had just walked right back into it.

When he looked at her again, something had changed.

Not in intensity.

But in certainty.

"You're not walking away from this," he said quietly.

Not harsh.

Not forceful.

Just… sure.

And for the first time since this began—

Alina believed him.
