Kael selected Path of the Vanguard.
The moment his choice registered, the stone in his hand dissolved. Green light flooded through him, not painful but overwhelming, filling every corner of his being with a warmth that felt like standing in sunlight after a lifetime of shadow.

Kael opened his eyes. The clearing looked different sharper, clearer, as if the world itself had been brought into focus. He could feel the forest around him, not as a threat but as a frontier. A place to explore. A place to claim.
The old woman was watching him, her blind eyes somehow seeing everything. "You chose the path of the hunter," she said. "The path of the blade. I thought you might."
"It's the only way to grow fast enough," Kael said. "We have a threat in the ruins. A steward who wants us gone. A war coming. We need to be strong enough to survive all of them."
"Strength is not the same as power," the old woman said. "Strength can be broken. Power can be stolen. But growth..." She smiled. "Growth is forever. The Vanguard path will take you far, Guild Master. But remember: the best hunters know when to stalk and when to strike. They know when to fight and when to wait. Be patient. Let your guild grow. And when the time comes to act, act with everything you have."
Kael nodded. "Will you join us? We need someone who understands the old magic. Someone who can help us prepare for what's coming."
The old woman laughed again, but this time there was warmth in it. "I've spent a hundred years hiding. I suppose it's time to come out of my shell." She rose from her stool, gathering her herbs, her tools, the few possessions that had sustained her through decades of solitude. "Call me Morwen. It's the name I had before the war. Before everything."

They returned to Millbrook as evening fell, the forest seeming less hostile with Morwen walking among them. Animals that had hidden from Kael and Garrick now watched from the trees, curious rather than afraid. The old woman hummed as she walked, a tune that seemed to resonate with the wind, the leaves, the very earth beneath their feet.
When they reached the village, a crowd was waiting.
Not the hopeful crowd of farmers who had come to thank them for the road. This crowd was different—angry, fearful, their faces lit by torches that cast long shadows across the street. And at the center of it all, standing in front of the guild hall with a dozen armed men at his back, was Vex.
The steward's assistant was smiling. It was the same smile he'd worn in the cellar, the smile of a man who enjoyed watching smaller creatures squirm.
"Well, well," he said as Kael approached. "The Guild Master returns. Just in time."
Kael's hand moved to the knife at his belt. Behind him, he heard Garrick's bow string creak as the hunter nocked an arrow. Rina faded into the shadows, her movements fluid and silent.
"What do you want, Vex?"
The assistant's smile widened. "The steward has issued a decree. All unofficial organizations operating within the barony must register with his office. There is a fee, of course. And an inspection. To ensure that such organizations are not... disruptive to the peace."
He produced a scroll, its wax seal gleaming red in the torchlight. "The Millbrook Guild is hereby ordered to appear before the steward's court in seven days. You will present your charter, your membership rolls, and your financial records. Failure to appear will result in the dissolution of your organization by force."
Kael took the scroll. His face was calm, but inside, his mind was churning. Seven days. The steward was giving them just enough time to panic, to make mistakes, to try to flee or fight before they were ready.
"The guild will appear," Kael said.
Vex's smile flickered. He'd expected resistance, fear, maybe even violence. He hadn't expected calm acceptance.
"The steward will be... pleased to hear that. He looks forward to meeting the man who thinks he can build a guild in the Baron's own lands." He turned to leave, then paused. "One more thing. The guild's little expedition into the forest? The steward is curious about what you found. He's sent his own men to investigate the ruins. For the village's safety, of course."
Cold fury washed through Kael. The steward wasn't just threatening the guild. He was going after the ruins. Going after whatever was waking there. And if his men were as incompetent as everything else in this barony, they'd make things worse. Much worse.
"Tell the steward we look forward to his inspection," Kael said, his voice steady. "And tell him to be careful in the ruins. The forest doesn't welcome fools."
Vex's smile finally vanished. He stared at Kael for a long moment, something dark moving behind his eyes. Then he turned and walked away, his men falling in behind him.
The crowd dispersed slowly, the villagers casting frightened glances at the guild hall as they retreated to their homes. By the time the last torch had disappeared, Kael and his people were alone in the street.
"A week," Brenn said, his voice tight. "We have a week before the steward comes for us."
"We have a week to become too strong to touch," Kael said. He turned to his guild, his people. "We need every advantage we can get. Garrick, you know the ruins better than anyone. How long to get there and back?"
"Two days, if we push hard. Three if we want to be careful."
"We don't have time to be careful. You, me, Rina, and Morwen. We leave at dawn. We find out what's in those ruins before the steward's men can make it worse."
"And the steward's court appearance?" Elara asked.
"We'll be back in time. I promised we'd appear. We're going to keep that promise. But when we walk into that court, we're not going to be beggars asking for permission to exist. We're going to be a force the steward has to reckon with."
He looked at Morwen, who had been silent since they'd entered the village. "You said the Guild Cores were meant to rebuild what the war destroyed. That the old ones dreamed of a world where the weak were protected. That dream is dying. The nobles are squeezing everything that's left. The monsters are waking. War is coming."
He looked at each of them in turn. "We're going to rebuild that dream. Starting now. Starting here. But first, we have to survive the week."
That night, Kael couldn't sleep.
He lay on his pallet in the guild hall, staring at the ceiling, his mind running through possibilities, contingencies, plans. The system window hovered in his vision, a constant reminder of how far they had to go.

Three quests. Seven days. And a steward who was already moving against them.
Kael sat up, reaching for the charcoal he used to make notes on the barrel. He started drawing, mapping out the next seven days. Each hour accounted for. Each resource allocated. Each risk assessed.
He was still working when Morwen appeared at his side, her blind eyes somehow finding him in the darkness.
"You carry the weight of the world on your shoulders," she said softly. "It will break you, if you let it."
"The world is heavy," Kael said. "And I'm the only one who can carry it."
"That's not true. That's never been true." She sat beside him, her old hands folding in her lap. "The old ones built the Guild Cores for exactly this reason. So that no one would have to carry the weight alone. You have five people who chose to follow you. Let them help. Trust them. Or you'll burn out before the real fight even begins."
Kael looked at the map he'd drawn. At the lines and arrows and careful calculations. He'd built it all himself, every step planned, every contingency accounted for.
But she was right. He couldn't do this alone. He'd never been able to do anything alone. In his old life, he'd managed projects by building teams, by trusting people, by giving them the tools they needed to succeed.
He'd forgotten that. In the rush to survive, in the terror of being dropped into a world that wanted to crush him, he'd forgotten the most important lesson of his old life.
He couldn't do it alone. He didn't have to.
He picked up the charcoal and started again. This time, he sketched out roles for each of his members. Garrick would lead the expedition to the ruins. Rina would handle the forest navigation. Morwen would provide knowledge of the old magic. Brenn would coordinate with the villagers, organizing them for defense. Elara would manage supplies and communications.
And Kael? Kael would do what he'd always done. He'd hold it all together. He'd make sure every piece fit. He'd be the center that couldn't break.
When he was finished, the plan was better than before. More flexible. More resilient. Stronger.
Morwen smiled, though she couldn't see the map. "You're learning," she said. "Good. The Guild Master who tries to be everything is the Guild Master who dies alone. The Guild Master who builds a team, who trusts his people..." She patted his hand. "That Guild Master changes the world."
Kael looked at the plan, then at the sleeping forms of his guild in the darkness. They had come so far. They had so much further to go.
But for the first time, he believed they could actually make it.
