In Zideus, affinity is no longer preference, talent, or personality like it used to be thousands of years ago because mana mutated. It is adaptation.
The world's mana is toxic, reactive, and saturated with emotional and environmental corruption. A person's affinity is determined by what kind of corruption their body and mind learned to survive during their formative years.
Affinity is not what you like. Affinity is what did not kill you.
CORE CONCEPT
What Affinity Represents:
- A biological and spiritual adaptation
- A specialization of the individual's "mana filter"
- A scar left by environment, trauma, or prolonged exposure
The type of corrupted mana a person can:
- Harmonize with more easily
- Refine more safely
- Use with less backlash
Everyone can attempt many kinds of magic but:
- Your affinity determines what is safest
- What is most efficient
- And what is least likely to poison or mutate you
Outside your affinity, mana becomes:
- Harder to harmonize
- Dirtier to filter
- More likely to cause long-term damage or sudden failure
HOW AFFINITY FORMS
Affinity is shaped early in life, when the body and mind are still developing their mana-processing structures.
There are three main influences:
The Protective Scar (Trauma-Based Affinity)
Definition:
- If a child grows up in a region saturated with a specific type of corrupted mana, their body may mutate and adapt to survive it.
Examples:
- Acid-scarred industrial ruins > Corrosive / Dissolution affinity
- Necrotic war zones >Decay / Entropy affinity
- Crystallized wastelands > Mineral / Rigid affinity
- Storm-warped regions > Surge / Kinetic affinity
Mechanism:
The child's "mana filter" and nervous system adapt to:
- Neutralize that specific toxin
- Process that specific instability
- This becomes their natural safe zone for magic use
Narrative Meaning:
The Echo (Emotional Resonance)
Definition:
- Because mana carries emotional residue, a child's dominant long-term emotional state can permanently "color" their mana processing.
Examples:
- Prolonged fear / silence > Stasis, Concealment, Dampening affinities
- Chronic rage / hatred > Combustion, Rupture, Surge affinities
- Long-term despair / grief > Erosion, Decay, Entropy affinities
- Constant vigilance / tension > Precision, Severance, Control affinities
Mechanism:
- The emotional state becomes a stable pattern in the person's mana flow
- Their filter becomes best at handling mana with similar "emotional contamination"
Important Consequence:
These users are often:
- Extremely effective with their affinity
- Extremely unstable if they lose emotional control
- Their emotions don't just power their magic
- They destabilize or stabilize the filtration process
The Filter Type (Physiological Affinity)
Definition:
- Different people naturally develop different mana-processing structures—biological or metaphysical "filters" that are better at handling certain contaminants.
Examples:
- Mineral-heavy filter > Earth / Metal / Structure-type magic
- Psychological-residue filter > Illusion / Mind / Spectral-type magic
- Chemical/decay filter > Corrosion / Rot / Dissolution-type magic
- Thermal/energetic filter > Heat / Kinetic / Explosive-type magic
Mechanism:
Even without major trauma, some bodies:
- Process certain "mana impurities" better than others
- This creates natural efficiency differences between people
Result:
Two people in the same corrupted zone:
- One collapses from poisoning
- The other can operate almost normally
III. WHAT AFFINITY DOES MECHANICALLY
Affinity affects three things:
Harmonization
- You can match the local mana frequency more easily if it aligns with your affinity
- Less resistance, less backlash, less instability
Filtration
- Your body/tool removes specific contaminants more efficiently
- Less internal damage
- Slower toxin buildup
- Higher sustainable output
Risk Profile
Inside your affinity:
- Safer
- Cleaner
- More repeatable casting
Outside your affinity:
- Faster poisoning
- Higher mutation risk
- Greater chance of spell failure or recoil
GROWTH AND LIMITS
How Affinity Develops
Affinity does not usually change types.
What improves is:
Filter efficiency
Toxin tolerance
Control under stress
How far you can safely operate outside your natural range
So growth looks like:
"I can handle more of my own type without dying"
"I can briefly touch other types without collapsing"
Not: "I unlocked five new elements"
Classification at Academies
They does not sort students by "elements." They run diagnostic exposure tests to determine:
- Which corrupted environments the student stabilizes in
- Which toxins their body neutralizes fastest
- Which mana states cause the least physiological stress
- Where their filtration system starts to fail
Common Testing Facilities:
- Instability Chambers (general corruption)
- Emotional Residue Fields (war echoes, psychic noise)
- Mineral Saturation Zones
- Necrotic Trace Rooms
- Chemical/Corrosive Exposure Halls
Results Are Used To:
- Assign training environments
- Restrict dangerous specializations
- Determine medical risk profiles
- Classify students into Affinity Processing Types (APT)
SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES
Not all affinities are treated equally.
Some are:
- Considered dangerous
- Restricted by law or academy policy
- Associated with disasters, war crimes, or taboo magic
- Feared as "walking contamination sources"
Examples:
- Necrotic or decay affinities may require isolation labs
- Corrosive affinities may be banned from civilian districts
- Emotionally volatile surge-types may be monitored or restrained
- "Clean" or low-risk affinities are often favored and fast-tracked
So affinity becomes:
- A social label
- A career limiter or accelerator
- A source of prejudice or privilege
- Not just a combat specialization
VII. RELATIONSHIP TO HARMONIZATION & FILTERING
Affinity is not a separate system.
It is:
- The personal tuning of your Harmonization and Filtration pipeline.
- Harmonization: Affinity determines what you can sync with safely
- Filtration: Affinity determines what you can clean efficiently
- Anchoring (Emotion): Affinity determines how badly your emotions can destabilize the process
Together, they define:
- Your safe operating range
- Your burnout threshold
- Your long-term health risks
- Your combat role and limitations
