Aria: Okay, logic check. I am currently pinned to a heart-shaped bed by Julian Vane, the man who once gave me a 2-page memo on why my desktop wallpaper was 'distracting.' His heart is literally thumping against my shoulder. Is it the 'Jealousy Protocol' or is he actually... no. Focus, Aria! The shadow-ex is charging a binary blast!
"Thorne, get up!" Julian yelled, grabbing her waist to heave them both off the mattress just as a bolt of black pixels obliterated the towel-swans.
"I'm trying! But the tether is tangled in your stupid tuxedo buttons!" Aria shrieked, scrambling to her feet.
Because of the 2-meter tether, they looked like a pair of three-legged race contestants in a horror movie. Every time Aria lunged left to dodge, she yanked Julian right.
"Coordination, Aria! Follow my lead!" Julian commanded, his Lead Dev brain kicking into overdrive. "On three, we slide-dash. One, two—"
"I don't take orders from people who use 'Elegant' to describe code!" Aria countered, but she moved anyway.
They slid across the digital hardwood. The Shadow-Ex—a flickering, monstrous version of Aria's past mistake—roared.
Julian: Why is my 'Primal Urge' meter hitting 80%? I don't even know this guy. But seeing him look at Aria like she's his property... it's making the System's 'Berserker' buff trigger in my veins. If I don't punch this glitch in the face in the next ten seconds, I might actually combust.
"Aria, the Master Key is in his chest cavity," Julian hissed, pinning her against the wall as another blast whistled past his ear. "I'll distract him. You reach in and grab it."
"Distract him how?!"
Julian looked at the Love Meter. It was flickering. "The 'Jealousy Protocol' feeds on emotional instability. If we show 'Extreme Intimacy,' the System will lag. It won't know how to process the data."
Aria's eyes went wide. "You want me to... in front of my ex-glitch?"
"Do it now!"
Julian grabbed Aria's waist and pulled her flush against him. He didn't kiss her—he buried his face in the crook of her neck, his breath hot against her skin.
SYSTEM ALERT: INTIMACY OVERLOAD.
PROCESSING... PROCESSING...
LAG DETECTED: 400ms.
The Shadow-Ex froze, its pixels stuttering.
Aria: Oh my god. Oh my god. He's actually hugging me. He smells like expensive sandalwood and panic. This is the best/worst day of my life. GRAB THE KEY, ARIA! GRAB THE KEY!
Aria lunged, her hand disappearing into the Shadow-Ex's chest. Her fingers closed around a cold, metallic object.
"Got it!" she yelled.
As soon as her fingers touched the key, a massive data-dump flooded her brain. It wasn't game lore. It was Real World Security Footage.
Aria saw a video feed of their real-life bodies in the lab. They were sitting in their chairs, headsets on. But standing over them wasn't Julian's father.
It was Julian's Assistant, Marcus, holding a syringe.
"Julian," Aria whispered, the world around them slowing down as the Shadow-Ex dissolved into white light. "It's not your father. We're not being stress-tested by the company."
Julian pulled back, his eyes searching hers. "Then who is it?"
Aria looked at the Master Key in her hand. It started to glow with a dark, purple light.
"We're being harvested," Aria said, her voice trembling. "Project Chimera... it isn't an AI. It's a way to download human consciousness into a digital hive-mind. And because we're the 'Enemies,' our high-friction emotions are the most valuable energy source."
The Cliffhanger
The System Voice suddenly changed. It was no longer bubbly. It was Marcus's voice, cold and echoing through the suite.
"Correct, Ms. Thorne. And the more you fight—or fall in love—the faster the download completes. So please... keep the Rom-Com going. I need ten more chapters of 'Tension' before your brains are completely fried."
The door to the suite vanished. Outside was no longer a village, but a void of endless falling code.
Julian grabbed Aria's hand, his grip tightening. "Aria, if we stop feeling... we die. If we keep feeling... he wins."
