Chapter 2 - Title: The Last Promise

Chapter 2 :A Strange Friendship

After the day sujit learned khepi's name, something in his life slowly began to change.

Before that, every day had felt exactly the same. He would wake up early in the morning, walk to the shop, work all day, and then return home feeling tired and silent. Life had been nothing more than a routine filled with responsibilities.

But now, there was something new in his day.

A small hope.

Sometimes, when the shop door opened and a soft breeze came inside, sujit would look up immediately. For a moment he would wonder if khepi had come again.

And sometimes… she did.

Khepi started visiting the shop more often than before. At first it seemed normal. She bought tea, sugar, biscuits, milk, or small household items.

But sujit slowly realized something strange.

Sometimes she bought things she had already bought the day before.

Once she bought two packets of the same biscuits in the same week.

Sujit smiled quietly to himself. Maybe she just liked talking.

One afternoon, when the sun was bright and the street looked calm, khepi entered the shop again.

Sujit looked up and smiled politely.

"Hello," he said.

Khepi returned the smile. "Hello, sujit."

It was the first time she had called him by his name.

For some reason, that made sujit feel unexpectedly happy.

"What do you need today?" sujit asked.

Khepi looked around the shelves as if thinking carefully.

"Just a packet of biscuits," she said.

Sujit took the biscuits and placed them on the counter.

But instead of leaving immediately, khepi stayed there quietly.

After a moment she asked, "Do you work here every day?"

Sujit nodded.

"Yes. Morning to night."

Khepi looked slightly surprised. "Every day?"

Khepi smiled softly.

"When life is hard, you don't really get holidays."

Khepi didn't reply for a few seconds.

Then she said gently, "You must be very strong."

Sujit laughed a little.

"No… I'm just trying to survive."

For a moment, silence filled the small shop.

Outside, a bicycle passed slowly along the road.

Khepi looked outside for a while, then suddenly asked,

"Do you ever feel tired of everything?"

Sujit looked at her, slightly confused.

"Tired?"

"Yes… tired of life," she said quietly.

Rahul thought for a moment.

"Sometimes," he replied honestly. "But if I stop trying, my family will suffer. So I keep going."

Khepi looked at him carefully, as if studying his words.

Then she gave a small smile.

"You're stronger than most people."

Sujit scratched his head awkwardly.

"No… I'm just a shop helper."

Khepi shook her head slightly.

"Sometimes the strongest people are the ones nobody notices."

Her words stayed in sujit's mind long after she left the shop that day.

Days continued to pass.

Their conversations slowly became longer.

At first they only talked about small things — the weather, the market, the town.

But slowly their talks began to change.

Khepi sometimes spoke about books she liked to read.

Sujit listened carefully even though he had never read most of those books.

Sometimes sujit told small stories about his childhood.

Khepi listened quietly with a gentle smile.

For the first time in many years, sujit felt comfortable talking to someone outside his family.

One evening, dark clouds gathered in the sky.

The wind began to blow softly, carrying the smell of rain.

Sujit was standing outside the shop when khepi arrived again.

She looked a little different that day.

Her face seemed tired.

Her eyes looked distant.

"Are you okay?" sujit asked.

Khepi forced a smile.

"Yes… I'm fine."

But sujit could tell she wasn't telling the truth.

They stood outside the shop for a moment as the first drops of rain began to fall.

"Do you like rain?" khepi suddenly asked.

Sujit looked up at the sky.

"Yes," he said. "Rain makes everything quiet."

Khepi nodded slowly.

"Yes… quiet."

For a moment she looked like she wanted to say something important.

But then she stopped.

Instead, she simply said, "I should go."

Sujit nodded.

"Take care."

Khepi walked away slowly into the rain.

Sujit watched her disappear down the street once again.

Something about her sadness troubled him deeply.

He didn't know why.

But he felt a strange connection with her.

A connection that was growing stronger every day.

Sujit still didn't know much about khepi's life.

He didn't know where exactly she lived.

He didn't know about her family.

And he didn't know the truth about the pain she carried in her heart.

But soon…

sujit would discover a secret that would change everything.

A secret that would turn their simple friendship into something far more complicated.

Because Meghla was hiding more than just sadness.

She was hiding a life that sujit had never imagined.

And once sujit discovered that truth…

Nothing between them would ever be simple again.
