This side of Julian Winslow was clearly unfamiliar to Shalma Hughes. In her mind, he was always high-spirited, the center of attention wherever he went, and worshiped like a god.
At that moment, Shalma really wanted to wake Mrs. Lewis—or anyone else in Winslow Garden, for that matter—to help the man standing outside the iron gate. However, she figured it would be inconsiderate to disturb their sweet dreams, so she simply braced herself and went out to meet him.
She had never seen Julian drunk before and had no idea how to handle him. It wasn't until she reached the gate that she realized his eyes were actually closed. She wondered if he was asleep.
"Mr. Winslow..." she called out as she unlocked the gate. She figured that if he really was asleep, there was no way she could carry him inside.
The heavy iron gate creaked loudly as she pulled it open.
