Chapter 7: One Fire, Twenty-Five Strangers
Night had completely swallowed the Sahara Desert.
The sky looked unreal.
Thousands of stars.
Cold wind moving across endless sand.
And in the middle of it all—
A messy, half-organized student camp.
---
After hours of work, everyone was exhausted.
Two huge tents stood in the sand.
They were not perfect.
They leaned slightly.
The ropes looked questionable.
But they stood.
And right now… that was good enough.
---
Alex wiped sweat from his forehead.
"Okay. I'm officially done building things for today."
Lyra collapsed onto a crate.
"Same. My arms are dead."
Ash stretched.
"If the tent collapses at night, I'm blaming Alex."
Alex looked offended.
"HEY."
---
Near the edge of camp—
Care was hammering the final stake into the sand.
One last hit.
Done.
She stood up and brushed sand from her hands.
Behind her—
Cole leaned against a supply crate watching.
"You know," he said casually, "if you had followed my wind calculations, that tent would be more stable."
Care slowly turned.
"Oh really?"
Cole nodded.
"Scientifically speaking."
Care smiled sweetly.
"Scientifically speaking, you should shut up."
---
Across the camp—
JJ burst out laughing.
"This is better than TV."
Keifer nodded.
"They've been fighting for six hours."
Cin added,
"And they're still not tired."
---
Meanwhile—
Gorya looked around the camp.
"Alright. Before it gets colder, we need fire stands."
Everyone groaned.
---
Thyme
"More work?"
MJ
"If we don't freeze tonight, yes."
---
Soon—
Everyone was moving again.
Small fire stands were placed around the camp's boundary.
Little flames began glowing like protective lights.
And finally—
A huge fire was built in the center.
---
Kavin tossed dry wood into it.
The flames roared upward.
Warm orange light spread across the sand.
Everyone instinctively moved closer.
---
Now came the best part.
Food.
---
Freya opened a supply bag.
"Okay we have dried vegetables, instant soup, and bread."
Rakhi frowned.
"That sounds depressing."
Percy shrugged.
"It's survival camp, not five-star hotel."
---
Alex stirred the soup pot over the fire.
Lyra sat beside him.
"Chef Alex."
Alex smirked.
"Respect the cook."
Ash peeked into the pot.
"Don't poison us."
---
Nearby—
JJ sat cross-legged beside Keifer.
"So… how long before someone panics about desert animals?"
Cin immediately raised his hand.
"I'm already panicking."
---
On the other side—
Thyme tossed more wood into the fire.
MJ leaned back on his elbows.
"This is actually kinda cool."
Kavin nodded.
"Yeah… if we ignore the part where we might die."
Ren quietly stared at the flames.
---
Soon bowls of hot soup were passed around.
Everyone sat in a rough circle around the fire.
For the first time since arriving—
The tension faded a little.
---
Lyra
"So which genius planned this camp?"
Rakhi
"I want their name."
JJ
"So I can fight them."
---
Everyone laughed.
Even Care smiled slightly.
---
Then Cole spoke.
"Technically… survival environments improve leadership skills."
Care rolled her eyes.
"Oh no. He's giving a lecture."
---
Thyme
"Please don't."
MJ
"Spare us."
---
Cole ignored them.
"Statistically, unpredictable environments increase strategic thinking."
Care leaned closer to the fire.
"Statistically, people talking too much near fire become firewood."
---
Alex almost choked on soup.
Keifer laughed loudly.
"Okay that was good."
---
The chaotic energy returned.
People talking over each other.
Teasing.
Complaining.
Arguing about food portions.
---
At one point—
Cin accidentally dropped a spoon into the fire.
Freya
"CIN!"
Cin
"IT SLIPPED!"
---
Meanwhile—
At the edge of camp—
Some students were… not relaxing.
---
In the shadows beyond the firelight—
Zein stood silently.
Beside him were Ace, Matt, Mia, and Allison.
They weren't looking at the camp.
They were looking farther away.
Toward the dunes.
---
Faint shapes stood there.
Two figures.
Watching.
Guards.
Sent by the university administration.
But far enough to pretend they weren't interfering.
---
Matt spoke quietly.
"They've been there since sunset."
Mia
"They're rotating positions every thirty minutes."
Allison
"Watching us."
---
Ace looked toward the campfire.
"Or watching someone."
---
Zein said nothing.
His eyes remained fixed on the distant shadows.
---
Back at the fire—
The chaos continued.
---
JJ
"Okay serious question."
Everyone looked at her.
"If the tents collapse tonight… who are we blaming?"
---
Thyme
"Alex."
Ash
"Alex."
Lyra
"Alex."
---
Alex raised both hands.
"WHAT?!"
---
Care pointed calmly.
"Alex tied the rope wrong."
Cole nodded.
"For once, she's correct."
---
Alex stared at both of them.
"You two are evil."
---
More laughter.
The fire crackled.
Stars burned bright above the Sahara Desert.
For a moment—
Twenty-five strangers felt almost like a team.
---
Finally—
Exhaustion won.
---
The group stood.
Fire was reduced to safe embers.
Boundary fires remained burning.
---
Lyra stretched.
"Girls tent."
JJ grabbed a blanket.
"Race you."
---
Soon—
All the girls disappeared into one giant tent.
And the boys into the other.
Still arguing.
Still laughing.
---
Outside—
The desert wind moved across the dunes.
The fire flickered.
And far away—
The guards continued watching.
But they didn't realize something important.
---
The quiet group had already noticed them.
And Zein was still awake.
Watching back.
