Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 — What the Village Knows

Ren still hadn't woken up.

They brought him back before sunset.

No one spoke during the walk.

Not because there was nothing to say—

But because none of them were ready to say it.

Silence Before Questions

The house felt different now.

Not safe.

Just… quieter.

Kaito sat beside Ren, watching him like he might disappear if he looked away.

Aoi stayed near the window.

The outside felt heavier than before.

Like something was pressing closer.

Haruto broke the silence.

"…We can't keep doing this blindly."

Aoi didn't turn.

"…I know."

The Real Problem

Haruto leaned against the wall.

"It adapts."

He paused.

"First it targeted you. Then Ren."

Aoi's fingers tightened slightly.

"…Because I resisted."

Haruto nodded.

"And next time, it won't make the same mistake."

Aoi's Decision

Aoi turned finally.

Her eyes were tired—

But sharper than before.

"…Then I need to understand it better."

Kaito looked up immediately.

"You almost—"

"I know," she cut him off softly.

There was no anger in her voice.

Only certainty.

"…But running isn't working."

Training Begins

That night—

They didn't sleep.

Instead—

They tried something new.

Haruto set the rules.

"Short exposure only."

"No full connection."

"And the moment it feels wrong—we stop."

Aoi nodded.

This wasn't about bravery anymore.

It was about control.

The First Attempt

She sat in the center of the room.

Not outside.

Not at the burial ground.

Inside.

Safer.

Or at least—

They hoped so.

She closed her eyes.

Focused.

Slower this time.

Careful.

She reached for that feeling.

That thread.

That invisible link.

Controlled Contact

It came easier now.

Too easy.

A faint cold spread through the room.

Kaito stiffened.

"…It's happening again."

Haruto didn't interrupt.

"Stay steady," he said quietly.

Aoi's breathing slowed.

"…I can feel it…"

Something Changes

But this time—

The vision didn't pull her completely.

It stayed at the edge.

Like a door—

Half open.

The Observation

"…There are more of them…" she whispered.

Haruto's eyes narrowed.

"More… what?"

"…Spirits…"

Her voice grew softer.

"…Not just one…"

The Truth Expands

Aoi's hand trembled.

"…They're connected…"

"…Like… they're part of the same thing…"

Haruto's expression darkened.

"…A collective."

The Danger Returns

Suddenly—

Aoi flinched.

Her breathing broke.

"…It noticed me."

"Stop," Haruto said immediately.

And this time—

She listened.

She pulled back.

After the Attempt

The cold vanished.

The room returned.

But the tension didn't.

Kaito exhaled sharply.

"…So it's not just one spirit…"

Aoi shook her head slowly.

"…No…"

"…It's something bigger."

The Interruption

A knock came from the door.

Sharp.

Unexpected.

Everyone froze.

Haruto moved first.

Carefully—

He opened it.

The Visitors

Three villagers stood outside.

Silent.

Watching.

One of them stepped forward.

An older man.

"…You shouldn't be here."

His voice was calm—

But not welcoming.

The Warning

Haruto didn't back down.

"…We already know something's wrong."

The man's eyes shifted slightly.

"…Then you should leave."

Aoi stepped closer.

"…People are dying."

The man didn't react.

"…That's why you need to leave."

Suspicion

Kaito frowned.

"…Wait… you know about this?"

Silence.

Too long.

Too deliberate.

The Truth They Won't Say

The man finally spoke again.

"…Some things…"

He paused.

"…are meant to stay buried."

Aoi's heart dropped slightly.

Because she understood what that meant.

They weren't surprised.

They were hiding it.

The Shift

Haruto's voice hardened.

"…You've known this whole time."

No denial.

No explanation.

Just silence.

Final Warning

"…Leave by morning," the man said.

"…Or you'll regret staying."

Then—

They turned.

And walked away.

Aftermath

The door closed slowly.

No one spoke for a moment.

Then—

Kaito broke.

"…What the hell was that?"

Haruto exhaled.

"…That…"

His voice lowered.

"…means we're not just dealing with spirits anymore."

Aoi's Realization

Aoi looked toward the dark outside.

Her voice was quiet.

"…They're protecting it."
