Chapter 60 - Chapter 60 – The Presence

They ran.

No questions.

No hesitation.

Branches whipped past them as they cut through the forest.

Roots tore beneath their feet.

None of them looked back.

Not even Kushina.

Because somehow—

she already knew.

If she looked—

she would see it.

Daichi led without slowing.

Every movement precise.

Every turn chosen before anyone else even saw it.

Minato stayed beside Kushina now.

Closer than before.

Close enough that she noticed.

"…that's new…"

"…he's protecting you…"

"…I noticed…"

She hated how much that thought calmed her.

Another tremor.

Closer.

The earth shook beneath them.

Not violently.

Purposefully.

Like footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Something impossibly large…

walking.

Kushina swallowed.

"…what is that…"

Neither Daichi nor Minato answered.

That frightened her more than anything.

Several minutes passed before Daichi suddenly stopped.

His hand shot up.

A silent signal.

Immediately—

all three disappeared into the shadows beneath the dense roots of an enormous fallen tree.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed louder than necessary.

Only silence.

Waiting.

Then—

the footsteps stopped.

Kushina's heartbeat echoed loudly in her ears.

Too loudly.

"…it's here…"

"…yes…"

"…don't move…"

She stayed perfectly still.

The pressure outside grew heavier.

Not crushing.

Simply…

present.

As if the forest itself had acknowledged something standing within it.

A voice drifted softly through the trees.

Calm.

Deep.

Almost gentle.

"I know you're here."

Silence.

Nobody answered.

The voice continued.

"You hide well."

A pause.

"But not well enough."

Kushina felt every muscle tighten.

That voice…

wasn't like the hunters.

It carried no emotion.

No curiosity.

No cruelty.

Only certainty.

Minato's fingers slowly tightened around a kunai.

Daichi barely moved.

Only his eyes shifted toward Kushina.

One silent command.

Don't.

The voice spoke again.

"I did not come for you."

A pause.

"I came for the Nine-Tails."

Cold silence.

Kushina's stomach dropped.

"…me…"

"…no…"

Kurama's voice rumbled quietly.

"…me…"

For the first time—

there was no amusement.

No teasing.

Only caution.

That alone terrified Kushina.

Outside—

the footsteps resumed.

Slowly circling.

Not searching.

Knowing.

"I wondered," the voice continued quietly,

"how long it would take before you awakened."

Silence.

"You resisted longer than expected."

Kushina felt the pressure inside her shift.

Not fighting.

Listening.

"…don't answer…"

"…I wasn't planning to…"

Another pause.

Then—

the stranger laughed softly.

"You fear me."

Kushina frowned.

"…I don't even know you…"

"No."

Another pause.

"But he does."

The pressure inside her tightened instantly.

Kurama fell completely silent.

Kushina's eyes widened.

For the first time—

Kurama didn't respond.

Not one word.

Not one thought.

Nothing.

"…Kurama?"

Silence.

"…Kurama?"

Nothing.

The stranger stopped moving.

Just outside the roots.

Only a few meters away.

Close enough that Kushina could hear slow breathing.

Close enough that she realized…

he wasn't trying to find them anymore.

He already had.

"I will not force the meeting today."

The voice remained calm.

"You are not ready."

A pause.

"But soon…"

Another.

"You will seek me."

Kushina's jaw tightened.

"…not happening…"

The stranger chuckled.

Softly.

"We shall see."

The pressure slowly began to fade.

One step.

Then another.

The impossible weight disappeared deeper into the forest.

The silence lingered for several long moments afterward.

Nobody moved.

Not until Daichi finally exhaled.

Barely.

"…gone…"

Minato lowered his kunai.

For the first time—

his calm expression had cracked.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Kushina looked between them.

"…who…"

Her voice came out quieter than expected.

"…who was that?"

Silence.

Daichi answered first.

"I don't know."

A pause.

"But whoever it was…"

He looked toward the forest where the presence had vanished.

"…the hunters fear him."

Cold silence settled around them again.

Kushina closed her eyes briefly.

"…Kurama?"

Still nothing.

No answer.

No rumble.

No sarcasm.

Only emptiness.

And somehow—

that frightened her more than the stranger ever could.
