"FIGHT ME!"
Natsu's declaration echoed through the guild hall three days after Calvin's promotion. The pink-haired Dragon Slayer had been building up to this moment—Calvin could track the pattern in his increasingly aggressive behavior, the way his eyes followed Calvin during training sessions, the subtle challenges disguised as casual conversation.
Calvin had refused every previous challenge. Fighting for entertainment rather than necessity seemed inefficient. But now, with his coat's recent evolution and several theories about physical enhancement he wanted to test, the opportunity had value.
"Yes," Calvin said.
The guild went silent.
Natsu's grin widened. "REALLY?!"
"I have modifications to test. You provide adequate combat pressure."
"I'll take that as a compliment!" Natsu's fists ignited. "Let's do this outside before Erza yells at us!"
The entire guild migrated to the training ground. Word had spread fast—Calvin rarely fought unless required, so this was apparently noteworthy entertainment. Money was changing hands as people placed bets.
Calvin stood at one end of the training ground and focused inward. His Dragon Scale coat pulsed against his shoulders, responding to his intent. Over the past week, he'd been experimenting with its physical enhancement capabilities—the way it had improved his healing factor after consuming the crocodiles suggested it could boost other biological functions.
He pushed magic through their connection and felt his muscles respond. Not dramatically—no sudden explosion of power like Natsu's dragon force. Just a steady enhancement that increased strength output by approximately forty percent while the effect remained active.
"Ready?" Erza called from the sidelines. She'd appointed herself referee, probably to prevent excessive property damage.
"Ready," Calvin confirmed.
"BEGIN!"
Natsu charged immediately, flames trailing behind him. His combat style was predictable but effective—overwhelming aggression backed by enormous magical reserves.
Calvin didn't retreat. He drew Ivory and focused on the weapon's pattern. The gun had evolved alongside his coat, developing its own nascent intelligence. If the coat could reshape itself, perhaps Ivory could as well.
He pushed his intent into the weapon: adapt for close combat.
Ivory's structure shifted. The barrel retracted and split. The grip expanded. Within two seconds, Calvin held two elemental gauntlets—one wreathed in flames, the other emanating cold.
The guild erupted in surprised shouts.
Natsu's flaming punch connected with Calvin's fire gauntlet. The impact created a shockwave that kicked up dust and cracked the ground beneath them.
Calvin held his ground. The strength enhancement was working—he'd matched Natsu's physical power without being knocked backward.
"Whoa!" Natsu's eyes lit up. "You're strong! This is gonna be AWESOME!"
He launched a combination of fire-enhanced strikes. Calvin blocked with the ice gauntlet—the temperature differential created steam clouds that obscured vision. He countered with the fire gauntlet, landing a solid hit to Natsu's ribs.
Natsu laughed and breathed fire directly at Calvin's face.
The coat's vines erupted automatically, forming a barrier. The crocodile heads absorbed the flames, converting thermal energy to magical power that fed back into Calvin's reserves.
"You can eat fire too?!" Natsu looked delighted rather than concerned.
"Absorption and conversion," Calvin corrected. "Not consumption."
He pushed forward, using the strength enhancement to match Natsu's speed. Fire gauntlet strikes alternated with ice gauntlet blocks. The pattern was chaotic by necessity—Natsu's fighting style didn't follow predictable rhythms, forcing constant adaptation.
But Calvin was learning. Each exchange provided data about optimal strike angles, energy distribution, the way Natsu's dragon slayer magic interacted with elemental attacks.
"FIRE DRAGON'S IRON FIST!"
The enhanced strike caught Calvin in the shoulder and sent him sliding backward ten feet. His strength enhancement had held, preventing serious injury, but the impact jarred his entire skeleton.
Natsu inhaled deeply, scales forming on his skin. "Time to end this! FIRE DRAGON'S—"
Calvin recognized the pattern. Dragon's Roar—a concentrated beam of dragonfire with enough power to destroy buildings.
"—ROAR!"
The massive flame attack engulfed the training ground. Heat washed over everything. Several spectators yelped and scrambled backward.
Calvin's coat reacted before he consciously commanded it. Every crocodile-headed vine extended simultaneously, forming a spherical cage around him. The mouths opened wide and consumed the dragonfire.
Not blocked. Not deflected. Absorbed.
The magical energy flooded into Calvin's system—raw ethernano laced with dragon slayer properties. His coat processed it rapidly, converting fire to ice using the elemental balance maintained by Ivory's dual cores.
When the flame cleared, Calvin stood unharmed. Frost now covered every vine. The crocodile heads glowed with pale blue light.
"My turn," Calvin said.
He released the converted energy.
Dozens of ice beams erupted from the crocodile mouths simultaneously, each one targeting Natsu from a different angle. The barrage created a three-dimensional web of freezing attacks that left no obvious escape route.
Natsu dodged desperately, flames melting some beams while others grazed him and left frost burns. "THAT'S SO COOL! I mean—cold? Frozen? Whatever—THIS IS AWESOME!"
The assault continued. Calvin maintained steady output, using the absorbed dragonfire to fuel sustained attacks. Natsu was taking damage, slowing down, frost accumulating on his clothes and hair.
"ENOUGH!"
Erza materialized between them, requipped into heavy armor. She deflected the remaining ice beams with her sword and glared at both combatants.
"This was supposed to be a friendly match, not a demolition project. Look at the training ground!"
Calvin surveyed the damage. Craters from impacts. Scorch marks from Natsu's flames. Ice covering approximately thirty percent of the surface. Several trees at the perimeter had been knocked over or frozen solid.
"Acceptable collateral damage for combat testing," Calvin observed.
"NOT acceptable!" Erza pointed at the guild hall. "You nearly hit the building twice! The repairs will be expensive!"
"Worth it though!" Natsu was grinning despite being partially frozen. "Cal's super strong now! And those gauntlets! And the ice thing! We should fight again tomorrow!"
"Absolutely not. Both of you will help repair this mess."
Calvin nodded. That seemed fair. He'd gathered extensive data about his new capabilities—further immediate testing wasn't necessary.
The gauntlets shifted back into Ivory's gun form as he relaxed his intent. The transformation was seamless now, responding to need rather than conscious instruction.
His equipment was definitely evolving intelligence.
Gray approached while Calvin examined frost patterns on a nearby tree, looking for ways to reverse the damage.
"That ice magic was impressive," Gray said. His shirt was already gone despite the cold. "Converting fire directly to ice attacks? I've never seen anything like that."
"Energy transformation using elemental balance principles," Calvin explained. "The dragon fire provided raw ethernano. My equipment processed and converted it based on available elemental templates."
"Still impressive. Though..." Gray paused. "Have you considered learning magic circles? They'd enhance your attack power significantly."
Calvin had seen magic circles in action during missions—geometric patterns that amplified spells by drawing ambient ethernano from the environment. But his pattern copying ability let him replicate magical effects directly.
"Why would I need them? I can copy spell patterns without intermediate steps."
"What you call Patterns are probably the core of the spell," Gray said, "but circles supercharge everything. They pull ethernano from the air instead of just using your reserves. At higher levels, you can add effects like delayed activation or trajectory control. Makes complex magic way more efficient."
Calvin considered this. His lacrima reserves had been depleting faster lately as his creations grew more sophisticated. If magic circles reduced personal energy expenditure...
"Where can I learn about runic theory?"
"Ask Mira. The guild has books on basic runecraft. Good luck." Gray waved as he left.
Mirajane provided three books: Introduction to Magical Circles, Runic Theory for Practitioners, and Advanced Spell Architecture. Calvin took them to his treehouse workshop and spent the next twelve hours reading.
The theory was fascinating. Gray had been right.
Patterns were indeed the internal core of spells—the instructions that told magic what to do. But magic circles were external frameworks that supercharged those patterns by channeling ambient ethernano.
A fire spell cast with pattern alone used only the caster's magical reserves. The same spell cast within a properly constructed magic circle drew additional power from environmental ethernano, multiplying output while reducing personal cost.
At advanced levels, circles could add complex commands: delayed activation, trajectory adjustment, conditional triggers, sustained effects. The geometric precision acted as programming language for magical phenomena.
Calvin's pattern copying ability let him replicate the what of magic. Circles would let him control the how.
He needed to test this immediately.
Calvin retrieved several bone fragments from his material storage and selected two elemental lacrima crystals—one fire, one ice. Then he carefully traced magic circles from the introductory book onto the bone constructs.
First test: a simple flame circle designed to produce sustained combustion.
He embedded the fire lacrima in the bone, traced the circle around it, and activated the pattern.
The construct ignited. A steady flame burned at the bone's tip—bright, hot, controlled. Perfect for use as a torch or candle.
But the lacrima's energy depleted rapidly. Within thirty seconds, the crystal had consumed one-third of its stored ethernano.
The circle wasn't drawing ambient power. It was only channeling the lacrima's reserves more efficiently, which actually increased consumption rate.
Second test: an ice blade construct.
Calvin carved the appropriate circle into a longer bone piece, embedded the ice lacrima, and activated it.
A blade of solid ice formed along the bone's edge. Sharp, dense, maintaining structural integrity at room temperature. The enchantment prevented natural melting.
Again, the lacrima depleted rapidly. The circle enhanced output but didn't reduce energy cost.
Calvin reviewed the theory books. According to the text, magic circles should tap ambient ethernano automatically. The geometric patterns created resonance with environmental energy, forming connections that supplemented the caster's power.
But his constructs weren't establishing those connections.
He examined the circles he'd traced. Perfect geometric accuracy. Correct runic symbols. Proper alignment with the lacrima cores.
The problem wasn't the circles themselves. It was how his life magic interfaced with runecraft.
His power worked through life force manipulation—biological patterns rather than pure magical construction. The circles enhanced his constructs' internal patterns but couldn't bridge the gap between remnant life force and ambient ethernano.
He'd need to research hybrid techniques. Ways to integrate biological magic with environmental ethernano channeling.
But that required resources he'd depleted in testing.
Calvin looked at his two functional constructs—the eternal flame candle and the never-melting ice blade. Both were technically successful despite the efficiency problems.
The guild would probably buy them for study. Mirajane had mentioned that experimental magical items sold well to researchers and specialty shops.
Calvin brought both constructs to the guild hall the next morning. Mirajane examined them with obvious interest.
"These are remarkable," she said, carefully touching the ice blade. "The enchantments are stable, the construction is elegant... How much do you want for them?"
"Whatever price you consider fair. I need funds for materials to continue research."
"Fifteen thousand jewels for both? The guild's research fund will cover it."
"Acceptable."
Mirajane completed the transaction and handed him the money. "By the way, Natsu was looking for you earlier. Something about a high-paying mission."
Calvin found Natsu, Happy, and Lucy gathered around the quest board. Lucy was pointing excitedly at a notice with a remarkably large reward number.
"Two MILLION jewels!" she was saying. "We have to take this one!"
"What's the job?" Calvin asked.
Natsu turned, grinning. "Perfect timing! We're gonna destroy a book for some rich guy. Wanna come?"
Calvin read the quest notice. Client: Kaby Melon. Task: Destroy the book Daybreak, currently held by Duke Everlue in Shirotsume Town. Reward: 2,000,000 jewels.
"Why does he want it destroyed?"
"Dunno. We'll ask when we get there." Natsu crumpled the notice. "But two million jewels! Split four ways, that's... uh..."
"Five hundred thousand each," Calvin said.
"Yeah! That! So you coming?"
Calvin considered. The reward was substantial. The task seemed straightforward. And he'd never observed a corrupt noble's magical defenses—that could provide interesting data.
"Yes."
"AWESOME! Let's go!"
