Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Clear Skies

(POV: Kai)

The sky above Cyprus didn't feel deceptive this time.

Still cold. Still vast. Still endless—but no longer carrying that quiet sense of threat at every edge.

There was calm.

Kai held his position steadily above the operational zone, the F-35 responding like an extension of himself. Systems clean. Radar's active.

No surprises.

For once.

"Oracle to all units."

Scarlett's voice cut through—precise, controlled.

"I'm picking up a weak signal from the Sentinel's emergency beacon. Grid Foxtrot-3. Possible survivors."

Kai's focus sharpened instantly.

"Copy. Shadow-1 moving ahead."

Behind him, Amelia's A400M adjusted course—more cautious this time, maintaining distance.

"Atlas-1, stay behind me," he said. "We're not repeating yesterday."

A brief pause.

"Relax, Dawson," Amelia replied lightly. "I don't plan on getting shot down twice."

A faint smirk.

Good.

---

Island – Contact Zone

The island appeared beneath them—harsh, silent, deceptive.

"Oracle, radar status?"

"Active, but lower. Likely repositioned SAM systems."

More dangerous.

"Shadow-1 moving in."

Kai dropped altitude.

Seconds stretched.

Then—

"I've got visual."

Wreckage.

Smoke.

"Two survivors. One mobile. One down."

"Atlas-1, you have a window."

"Copy. Moving in."

---

Extraction

The A400M didn't land.

It held a controlled low altitude above the zone.

"Atlas-1 holding. You have less than two minutes."

The rear ramp opened.

Wind tore through the aircraft.

Ropes dropped.

"CSAR—go!"

One by one, the team descended—fast, efficient.

Kai circled above, scanning.

"Movement east side," Scarlett warned. "They're closing in."

"Copy."

Kai dropped lower—just enough presence.

Below—

"Contact established!"

"One conscious!"

"One critical!"

Time stretched.

"Atlas, prepare extraction."

"I'm ready."

The ropes tightened.

They were pulled up.

Slow.

Too slow.

"Last man coming up!"

Kai's radar flickered—

Vehicles.

Closing.

"Atlas, move. Now."

Ramp closed.

Engines surged.

The A400M climbed.

Only then—

Kai breathed.

---

Exit

Kai moved alongside Atlas—closer than standard.

"You're safe."

A pause.

"…Copy. And thank you."

He didn't reply.

He didn't need to.

---

Return to Akrotiri

No alarms.

No chaos.

Just landing.

Done right.

Kai stepped out.

And walked.

Toward her.

Amelia stood beside the aircraft—tired, marked—

alive.

Their eyes met.

No urgency.

Just certainty.

---

Final Briefing

"Operation successful."

Simple.

Enough.

"You will return to your respective units."

There it was.

Distance.

Again.

---

Departure

Morning light stretched across the runway.

"So… back to our own lives."

"Seems that way."

A pause.

Then—

"I'll come."

"To Brize Norton."

No joke.

No shield.

Just intent.

Amelia held his gaze.

"…Okay."

Enough.

The aircraft moved.

Kai stayed.

Watching.

Because this time—

he wouldn't let distance win again.

Not after everything.

Not after coming this far.

Some distances were not measured in miles,

or missions,

or time apart—

but in the choices they made

when walking away was easier.

And this time—

he chose not to.
