Chapter 1
The Transfer to Section E
Morning arrived slowly over the tall iron gates of HVIS — Horizon Valley International School.
The campus was already alive.
Students walked across the courtyard in neat uniforms, voices blending into the usual rhythm of another school day. Some hurried toward their classes, clutching notebooks and half-finished breakfasts. Others gathered near the fountains, laughing loudly like the day had no responsibilities waiting for them.
But inside the Academic Building, one corridor always felt different.
The hallway where Section E was located.
Even students from other sections walked a little quieter there.
Because everyone knew what Section E meant.
It wasn't just another class.
It was the class.
The most competitive students. The most difficult curriculum. The ones teachers expected to become future leaders, scholars, or heirs to powerful families.
Section E had a reputation.
And reputations attracted attention.
Inside the classroom, the students were already settling into their seats.
Some were reviewing notes from yesterday's lecture. Others were chatting lazily, unconcerned.
At the back of the room, sitting comfortably in a chair near the window, Mark Keifer Watson leaned back slightly, one arm resting on the desk behind him.
He looked relaxed.
But people who knew him well understood that his relaxed expression didn't mean he wasn't paying attention.
Keifer noticed everything.
He had sharp eyes, the kind that observed people quietly without making it obvious.
Tall, composed, and confident without needing to prove it, Keifer carried the quiet authority that came naturally to someone who had spent his whole life being prepared to lead.
Which was exactly what his future demanded.
As the legal heir of Watson Corporation, expectations followed him everywhere.
But right now he was simply the class president of Section E.
And he took that role seriously.
Keifer glanced around the classroom.
Cin was already writing something in his notebook.
Felix and Rory were whispering about a math problem.
Denzel and Calix were arguing quietly about yesterday's sports match.
Everything looked normal.
Predictable.
And Keifer liked predictable.
Predictable meant control.
Predictable meant things stayed efficient.
Then the classroom door opened.
The teacher walked in.
Immediately the room grew quieter.
But Keifer noticed something else.
Someone was standing beside the teacher.
A girl.
That alone was unusual.
Section E rarely accepted transfer students in the middle of the term.
The teacher placed a folder on the desk before turning toward the class.
"Good morning, everyone."
"Good morning, ma'am," the class responded automatically.
The teacher nodded before gesturing toward the girl beside her.
"We have a new student joining us today."
Murmurs immediately spread across the classroom.
A transfer student?
To Section E?
That almost never happened.
The teacher continued.
"Class, this is Jasper Jean Mariano."
The girl stepped forward.
For a moment, the room fell completely silent.
She stood calmly at the front of the classroom.
Her posture was straight, but not stiff.
Her hands were folded loosely in front of her.
No nervous fidgeting.
No awkward shifting.
Just quiet composure.
Keifer watched her carefully.
The first thing he noticed was how calm she looked.
Most transfer students entering Section E were nervous.
This class could be intimidating.
But she looked completely unaffected.
Like standing in front of thirty curious strangers meant nothing to her.
Her dark eyes scanned the room slowly.
Not shy.
Not arrogant.
Just… observing.
Students whispered quietly.
"Who is she?"
"Another transfer?"
"I've never seen her before."
Keifer studied her silently.
Jasper Jean Mariano.
The name didn't sound familiar.
Which was strange.
Most students entering Section E had known academic reputations.
But he had never heard of her.
That alone made him cautious.
The teacher spoke again.
"JJ transferred here this semester, and she'll be joining Section E starting today."
Then she turned toward the girl.
"Would you like to introduce yourself?"
The girl looked at the class again.
Her expression remained calm.
For a brief moment, Keifer expected the usual introduction.
Name.
Previous school.
Academic interests.
Something.
But instead she simply said,
"You can call me JJ."
That was it.
Nothing else.
The classroom fell silent again.
Students exchanged confused looks.
That was the entire introduction?
No explanation.
No details.
Just a nickname.
The teacher looked slightly surprised but quickly recovered.
"Well… welcome to Section E, JJ."
She gestured toward the empty desk near the window.
"You may take that seat."
JJ nodded once.
Then she walked down the aisle.
Her footsteps were quiet.
Unhurried.
Several students watched her curiously as she passed.
But JJ didn't look at anyone directly.
When she reached the desk, she placed her bag down and sat.
The seat happened to be only two rows away from Keifer.
Close enough for him to observe her easily.
Which he did.
Because something about her bothered him.
Not her appearance.
Not her attitude.
But the way she behaved.
She looked too calm.
Too comfortable.
Like someone who had already decided she belonged there.
Keifer leaned back slightly in his chair.
Another rich transfer student who thinks she belongs here.
He had seen plenty of those before.
Students who believed money or influence guaranteed them a place among the top class.
Section E had a way of proving those assumptions wrong.
The teacher began the lesson.
Within minutes the class returned to its normal rhythm.
Except for the occasional glance directed toward JJ.
She took out her notebook quietly.
Her movements were precise.
Organized.
Focused.
She wrote down the lecture points quickly without asking questions.
Keifer noticed something.
She wasn't struggling.
Not even slightly.
Most new students took at least a few days to adjust to Section E's pace.
But JJ followed the lecture easily.
Like she had already studied the material before arriving.
That was interesting.
The class continued.
About twenty minutes into the lecture, the teacher suddenly turned toward the students.
"Let's review something from yesterday's lesson."
She wrote a complex question on the board.
A few students frowned immediately.
Even some of the strongest students looked uncertain.
The teacher crossed her arms.
"Who can explain the concept behind this equation?"
Silence.
Cin looked thoughtful but unsure.
Felix scratched his head.
Rory flipped through his notes.
Keifer already knew the answer.
But he waited.
He liked seeing who else would attempt it.
Seconds passed.
Still no volunteers.
Then, slowly, a hand rose.
Everyone turned.
It was JJ.
The teacher nodded.
"Yes, JJ?"
JJ stood.
Her voice was calm.
"The equation represents a structural variation of the previous formula we studied yesterday," she said.
She walked toward the board.
Students watched curiously.
She pointed to one section of the equation.
"The mistake most people make is assuming this variable behaves the same as the earlier model."
Then she wrote a quick correction.
"But if you apply the revised coefficient here instead, the equation simplifies naturally."
She stepped back.
"That's the solution."
Silence filled the classroom.
The teacher looked impressed.
"Correct."
Students murmured.
Keifer stared at the board.
Her explanation was not only correct.
It was precise.
Efficient.
Even better than the explanation he had prepared in his mind.
JJ returned to her seat quietly.
Like nothing unusual had happened.
Keifer crossed his arms slightly.
Interesting.
But something about the moment still irritated him.
Not because she answered correctly.
But because she answered with complete confidence.
Like she had already expected to be right.
He spoke casually.
"Looks like the new student came prepared."
The class looked between them.
JJ glanced at him.
Her expression remained calm.
Then she replied,
"Or maybe the question wasn't that hard."
The room went silent.
Some students widened their eyes.
Cin nearly dropped her pen.
Felix looked like he was trying not to laugh.
No one talked to Keifer like that.
Especially not on their first day.
Keifer's eyes narrowed slightly.
Not angry.
Just curious.
JJ looked away and returned to writing in her notebook.
The teacher cleared her throat and continued the lesson.
But the atmosphere in the classroom had already changed.
For the rest of the period, Keifer occasionally glanced toward JJ.
She stayed focused on her notes.
Calm.
Silent.
Unbothered.
And somehow that calmness annoyed him more than arrogance ever could.
Because arrogant people were predictable.
But JJ?
She felt like a puzzle.
And Keifer Watson had never liked puzzles he couldn't solve.
Outside the classroom window, the morning sunlight slowly brightened the campus.
But inside Section E, something new had quietly begun.
A new presence.
A new mystery.
And without anyone realizing it yet—
The arrival of Jasper Jean Mariano was about to change everything.
