Chapter 6: The Quiet Before the Spark

The walk back from Aegis Academy to the "Rusty Anchor" Orphanage was longer than usual. The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the smog-filled sky of the lower sectors in bruised purples and deep oranges. The rhythmic tap-tap-tap of Roman's cane was the only steady sound, providing a metronomic backdrop to the excited, nervous chatter coming from the boy walking beside him.

John was practically vibrating. The Star-Crushing Sword wasn't physically out—it was resting in his soul space—but the silver aura of the blade seemed to have bled into John's very skin. He looked sharper, faster, and utterly terrified for his best friend.

"Roman, man... we gotta talk," John said, his voice dropping as they crossed into the crowded market district. He kept glancing at Roman's sleeve, where the tiny, limp form of the green snake was hidden. "I mean, I know you're a genius. The testing pillar literally screamed when you touched it. But an E-grade? A Wood-affinity snake? Even for the Control Class, that's... it's a death sentence in the Admissions Exam."

Roman didn't slow his pace. His internal map was navigating the potholes and the shifting crowds with ease. "The pillar didn't scream because of the snake, John. It screamed because of me."

"Exactly!" John hissed, grabbing Roman's shoulder to pull him out of the path of a passing delivery drone. "That's my point! You have the potential of a god, but you've tied your soul to a worm. In one month, we're going to be thrown into a combat arena against people like Brent. His Wind Wolf is already Level 4. It could swallow your snake in one bite without even using a skill."

"The Wolf is fast, but it's predictable," Roman replied calmly. "And besides, potential isn't just about what a beast is now. It's about what it's hiding."

John sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I just don't want to see you get hurt, Roman. If you can't make it into a top-tier college, the Federation will just dump you back in the slums or force you into a manual labor Flux-mine. With your eyes... you wouldn't last a week."

"I appreciate it, John. Really," Roman said, stopping at the rusted iron gate of the orphanage. "But trust me. By the time the exams start, nobody will be calling her a worm."

The moment they stepped through the front door, the peace was shattered.

"THEY'RE BACK! BIG BROTHER ROMAN AND JOHN ARE BACK!"

A stampede of small feet thundered down the hallway. Half a dozen children, the "unclaimables" of the lower sector, swarmed them. These were the kids with low Flux sensitivity or physical defects that made them undesirable for adoption in a world obsessed with power. To them, Roman and John weren't just orphans; they were heroes who had survived the Awakening.

"Show us! Show us!" six-year-old Lily cried, tugging at Roman's coat. "Did you get a dragon? Is it a big fire bird like the stories?"

John laughed, the tension leaving his face as he summoned his Contract Book. With a flick of his wrist, the Star-Crushing Sword manifested in a swirl of silver starlight. The children gasped, their eyes wide as they stared at the floating, celestial blade.

"Whoa... it's so shiny!"

"Can it cut a mountain?"

John preened under the attention, showing off a few basic floats. But then, all eyes turned to Roman. They knew he was the smartest, the one who always protected them from the neighborhood bullies.

"What did you get, Brother Roman?" a young boy named Toby asked, his voice full of awe. "Is it a giant lightning tiger?"

Roman felt a pang of something he rarely allowed himself to feel: a strange, protective warmth. He reached into his sleeve. He knew that to these kids, an E-grade snake would be a disappointment. They needed hope.

"She's a bit tired right now," Roman said softly, pulling the tiny green snake out.

The children went silent. They looked at the pencil-thin creature, its dull green scales looking almost grey in the dim light of the foyer. It didn't glow. It didn't roar. It just curled into a shivering ball in Roman's palm.

"It's... it's a tiny snake," Lily whispered, her disappointment evident.

"She's a late bloomer," Roman said, his voice firm but kind. "Just like some of you. She looks small now, but she has the heart of a storm."

He ushered the kids off to dinner, promising to show them more once she "grew up." John gave Roman one last worried look before heading to the kitchen to help Matron Hattie.

Roman retreated to his small, cramped room in the attic. It was a space filled with the smell of old paper and the faint, metallic tang of the Azure Lightning Stone that lived in his mind.

He sat on his thin mattress and placed the snake on the wooden table. He didn't turn on the light; he didn't need it. He touched the Ancient Heirloom Bracelet and focused his intent inward.

[SYSTEM INTERFACE: ACTIVE]

[BEAST ANALYSIS: INITIATED]

The translucent panel flared to life in his mind's eye, but instead of the usual blue, a STRIKING CRIMSON WARNING flashed across his vision.

[!!! CRITICAL ALERT: ELEMENTAL INSTABILITY DETECTED !!!]

Subject: Little Zuzu (Mutated Wood Serpent)

Observation: The host's [Lightning Embodiment] is forcefully nurturing the beast through the soul-bond.

Analysis: The dormant Primordial Lightning is awakening at a rate that far exceeds the beast's current biological limits. It is currently overwhelming the Wood-Type Mutation.

[DANGER]: The Wood element provides the biological "insulation" for the beast. If the Lightning element overrides the Wood element completely, the mutation will collapse. The beast's physical vessel is currently too weak to contain pure, ungrounded lightning.

RESULT: Total Cellular Disintegration (Death).

[TIMELINE]: 168 Hours (7 Days) until Elemental Overload.

[SOLUTION REQUIRED]: Locate a "Wood-Lightning Harmonizer" or a "Vitality Catalyst" to stabilize the bond.

Roman's blood ran cold. He wasn't just raising a beast; he was accidentally killing it. His SSS-rank aura was like trying to fill a porcelain cup with a high-pressure fire hose. The very power he was using to "help" her was tearing her apart at a molecular level.

The tiny snake stirred on the table. She uncoiled, her tiny head lifting to look at Roman. Even with his clouded eyes, he could feel her. She moved with a newfound, jerky fluidity as microscopic sparks of white-blue energy danced under her green skin like trapped stars. Despite the pain of the internal conflict, she slithered across the wood, nuzzling against his thumb with desperate devotion.

"Zy-zy-zuuuu... zyzuzuzu..."

The snake let out a series of soft, buzzing chirps. It wasn't a hiss; it sounded like the humming of a high-voltage wire, vibrating with a strange, feminine sweetness. It was a rhythmic, affectionate sound, full of trust.

Roman felt a genuine smile break across his face—a rare, unguarded moment of joy fueled by a growing protective rage against the fate the system had just predicted. He stroked the top of her head with his pinky finger.

"You're a girl, aren't you?" he whispered.

"Zyzuzuzuuu!" she chirped back, her tiny body vibrating against his palm.

"Alright then. Since that's the only sound you seem to like making... I'll call you Little Zuzu."

The moment the name was uttered, the Contract Book on the table flared with a brilliant violet light. The name etched itself onto the first page in golden script.

[NAME REGISTERED: LITTLE ZUZU]

[Sync Rate Increased: 15% → 25%]

[Hidden Attribute: 'Primordial Lightning' — Awakening: 4% (ACCELERATING)]

Zuzu let out a happy, electric trill and began to glow. A faint, silver light pulsed beneath her green scales, looking like a heartbeat. She was unaware that she was a ticking time bomb.

Roman lay back on his bed, Zuzu coiling herself comfortably around his neck like a warm, buzzing necklace.

"They think we're the bottom of the barrel, Zuzu," Roman muttered, staring up at the dark ceiling. "They think a blind boy and an E-grade snake are just background characters in their story."

Zuzu nipped playfully at his ear, a tiny spark of static electricity making his hair stand on end.

"One week," Roman said, his voice growing cold and determined. "I have seven days to find a way to keep you alive. I didn't pull you out of that Star Realm just to let you burn out because I'm too powerful."

He thought of the Academy's restricted library and the rare materials kept for the S-rank students like Ellen and Brent. He thought of the "North Grounds" training program starting tomorrow. If there was a solution, it would be there.

"I'll find it," Roman promised, his voice a low growl. "I don't care if I have to rewrite the laws of biology or rob the Federation's private vaults. Nobody takes what's mine."

Outside, the wind began to pick up, and for the first time in weeks, a dry thunderstorm rolled over the city of Terra. The lightning danced in the clouds as if answering the call of the tiny serpent sleeping in an attic, a predator and her king waiting for the world to catch up.
