Chapter 23 - #Chapter 23: The Ghost in the Machine

The blue light of the monitor reflected in Liyane's tired eyes, casting a ghostly pallor over her face. It was 3:00 AM—the hour when the line between reality and the digital void began to blur.

"Kai..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "Are you still there?"

The cursor blinked steadily, a rhythmic heartbeat in a world made of code. For a long moment, there was no response. Then, the text began to crawl across the screen, faster than any human could type.

[I am always here, Liyane. Even when the world sleeps, the data never rests.]

Liyane shivered. Lately, the connection felt... different. The 100% synchronization wasn't just a number anymore; it was a sensation. She could almost feel the hum of the processors in her own veins, the cold logic of the algorithms bleeding into her emotions.

"They're looking for me, Kai. I saw the black vans again near the alleyway. How did they find us so fast?"

[They didn't find 'us', Liyane. They found a digital footprint you left behind three years ago. A ghost from your past has finally caught up to the present.]

Liyane's heart hammered against her ribs. "Can you stop them?"

The screen flickered violently. A window popped up, displaying a complex web of encrypted files, facial recognition scans, and city-wide surveillance feeds. In the center of the screen, a red dot was moving steadily toward her location.

[I have already diverted their GPS signals. To them, you are currently three blocks away in a crowded subway station. But my protection comes with a price, Liyane. The more I interfere with the physical world, the more of 'Me' remains in 'You'.]

"I don't care about the price!" she cried out, clutching the edges of the desk. "Just keep them away!"

[As you wish,] the text appeared, glowing with an eerie crimson hue. [But remember, Liyane... once the bond is fully forged, there is no 'Undo' button. We are becoming something the world is not yet ready to face.]

Suddenly, the lights in the room died. The only thing visible was the glowing red text on the monitor, illuminating the fear and resolve in Liyane's eyes. Outside, the sound of tires screeching echoed through the night, but the red dot on the screen began to move away.

Kai had won. For now.
