CHAPTER SEVEN: A Battle of Power
The air in the office turned cold.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Chidimma stood frozen, her eyes locked on the man in front of her.
Julian's father.
The man who had silently destroyed her life two years ago.
"So," he repeated, his voice calm but sharp. "This is the girl."
Chidimma felt her chest tighten, but she refused to look away.
She had cried enough.
Suffered enough.
She wouldn't be weak again.
"Father," Julian said, his tone controlled. "This isn't the time."
The older man ignored him.
Instead, he took a slow step forward, his gaze fixed on Chidimma like he was studying her.
Judging her.
"You've grown bold," he said. "Coming back into my son's life like this."
Chidimma's fingers curled slightly into fists.
"I didn't come back for him," she replied, her voice steady. "I came for my job."
A faint smirk appeared on his face.
"Do you expect me to believe that?"
"I don't care what you believe," she said.
Julian glanced at her, surprised by her courage.
But also… worried.
"Watch your tone," the man said, his voice dropping slightly.
"I've been quiet for too long," Chidimma replied. "Not anymore."
The tension in the room increased.
Julian stepped in quickly.
"That's enough," he said firmly. "Both of you."
But neither of them listened.
"You think you can stand here and challenge me?" his father asked.
Chidimma lifted her chin.
"I'm not afraid of you."
A dangerous silence followed.
Then—
A low chuckle.
"That confidence," he said. "It will destroy you."
Chidimma's heart beat faster, but she didn't show it.
"You already tried once," she replied. "I'm still here."
Julian's eyes widened slightly.
This was going too far.
"Leave," Julian said suddenly, his voice firm as he turned to Chidimma.
She looked at him.
For a moment, she hesitated.
But then she understood.
This wasn't a request.
It was protection.
Without another word, she turned and walked out.
The door closed.
Silence.
Then—
Julian faced his father.
"You had no right to speak to her like that," he said.
His father's expression didn't change.
"And you have no right to bring her back into your life," he replied.
"I didn't bring her back," Julian said. "She works here."
"That was your choice," his father said sharply. "Just like it was your choice to disobey me now."
Julian's jaw tightened.
"I'm not a child anymore."
"No," his father replied. "But you're still my son. And you will not ruin everything I've built for you because of a girl."
Julian's eyes darkened.
"She's not just 'a girl.'"
That statement hung in the air.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
His father stepped closer.
"If you continue this," he said quietly, "you know exactly what will happen."
Julian didn't respond.
But his silence said enough.
Outside the office, Chidimma stood still, her heart racing.
She could still feel his presence.
His father's words.
His warning.
But this time…
Something inside her had changed.
Fear was no longer stronger than her.
"Chidimma."
She turned.
Vanessa.
Standing there with a knowing smile.
"I see you've met him," she said.
Chidimma didn't reply.
Vanessa stepped closer, lowering her voice.
"Now you understand," she continued. "This world isn't for someone like you."
Chidimma's eyes hardened.
"Then maybe it's time the world changes," she said.
Vanessa's smile faded slightly.
"Or maybe," she replied, "you'll be the one who gets broken again."
Chidimma didn't respond.
Because deep down…
She knew this wasn't just about love anymore.
It was a battle.
Power.
Control.
And survival.
And she had just stepped right into the middle of it.
