Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The after shock

The academy felt wrong.

Not quiet—just… muted.

Like something heavy was still sitting on it.

Kai Ryan Korr walked through the corridor alone.

His steps were steady, but not relaxed.

His shoulders were slightly stiff. His fingers flexed once in his pocket before going still again.

Students passed him.

Their voices dropped the moment he got close.

"…That's him…"

A boy avoided eye contact.

A girl quietly stepped aside.

No one said anything directly.

But they didn't need to.

Kai noticed.

He just didn't react.

But his jaw tightened slightly.

"…I didn't do it," he muttered under his breath.

Then paused.

"…I did."

His expression didn't change—but something behind his eyes did.

Inside the training courtyard—

Ren Qin was sitting on the railing like he owned the place.

One leg hanging loose.

Hands behind his head.

Like nothing in the world had ever tried to kill him.

When he saw Kai, he grinned immediately.

"…You've got that face again."

Kai stopped a few steps away.

"…What face."

Ren tilted his head.

"…Like you're thinking too hard."

Kai didn't answer.

His eyes flicked away for a second.

Ren dropped down from the railing and stretched his shoulders.

His voice lowered slightly.

"…You still feeling it?"

Kai paused.

A beat too long.

"…No."

Ren stared at him for a moment.

Then smirked—but it wasn't teasing this time.

"…Liar."

Silence settled between them.

Not uncomfortable.

Just real.

Kai finally spoke.

"…You should've died."

Ren blinked once.

Then shrugged.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…But I didn't."

Kai looked at him now.

Properly.

His expression tightened—just slightly.

Not anger.

Something closer to disbelief.

Ren stepped closer.

His tone softened a bit.

"…Hey."

A pause.

"…You're still you, right?"

Kai didn't answer immediately.

His fingers curled once.

Then relaxed.

"…I think so."

That answer made Ren exhale quietly.

"…Good."

Across the courtyard—

Aeris stood near the wall.

Still.

Controlled.

But her eyes didn't leave Kai.

Not fully.

Not even for a second.

Her face stayed calm.

Cold.

Perfectly composed.

But her fingers were gripping the strap of her uniform slightly tighter than usual.

When Kai's gaze briefly shifted toward her—

She turned away immediately.

Too fast.

Too practiced.

But her breathing changed.

Just a little.

Rex cracked his knuckles nearby.

"…So this is the calm before another disaster, huh."

Mina didn't laugh this time.

"…It feels heavier than before."

Ray leaned back against the wall.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Something's still off with him."

He nodded toward Kai.

Darius arrived without warning.

The courtyard went silent instantly.

Even the air felt like it straightened itself.

He looked at all of them.

Not angry.

Not pleased.

Just… measuring.

"…Seven days."

A pause.

"…That is all you have left."

A few students shifted uncomfortably.

Darius continued.

"…You will not represent yourselves."

"…You will represent this academy."

A boy in the back muttered excitedly—

"We'll crush them!"

Another followed—

"No chance they survive us!"

But Darius didn't react to them.

His eyes stayed forward.

"…Confidence is easy."

A pause.

"…Survival is not."

That shut them up.

Kai exhaled slowly.

His expression stayed calm—but his eyes sharpened slightly.

Like something inside him had finally focused again.

Ren stretched his neck.

"…Good."

A faint smile returned.

"…I was getting bored of waiting."

Aeris finally spoke.

Her voice was quiet—but firm.

"…Don't underestimate them."

Ren blinked.

Then grinned again.

"…Was that worry?"

Aeris didn't look at him.

"…It was advice."

But her grip on her strap loosened only after she said it.

Not fully.

Just enough.

Kai noticed that too.

He said nothing.

But his eyes lingered for half a second longer than usual.

Darius turned slightly.

"…Prepare."

A pause.

"…Because what comes next will not feel like training."

Silence followed.

This time, it wasn't calm.

It was anticipation that sat too heavy in the chest.

Kai looked down briefly.

Then forward again.

His expression was steady.

But something inside it had changed.

Ren stood beside him.

Smiling.

But his eyes were sharp now.

Aeris remained where she was.

Still composed.

Still cold.

But not distant.

Just… watching.

And for the first time since the incident—

The academy felt like it was breathing again.

Not safely.

But waiting.
