Chapter 54 - Target — Hayes

Darkness doesn't hide danger.

It concentrates it.

The lights went out—

And the game changed.

No system.

No structure.

No rules.

Just instinct.

Inside Obsidian Tower—

Daniel Hayes didn't move.

Not because he froze.

Because he listened.

Breathing.

Footsteps.

Air shifting.

Someone else was there.

"Stay low," Alexander said quietly.

His voice—

Different now.

Not amused.

Focused.

💬 In total darkness… would you fight blindly or wait for the enemy to move?

Daniel's eyes adjusted slowly.

Shadows forming shapes.

Movement—

Left.

He turned—

Too late.

A strike came from the dark.

Fast.

Silent.

Daniel blocked—

Barely.

The impact pushed him back.

This wasn't a shooter.

This was something else.

"Not amateurs," Alexander muttered.

A pause.

"Not even close."

Another movement.

Behind them this time.

Alexander reacted—

Fast.

He grabbed the attacker—

Twisted—

But the man didn't go down.

He adapted.

Countered.

Silence broke into violence.

No gunshots.

Just controlled strikes.

Precision.

"They're trained," Daniel said.

Alexander smirked faintly.

"Obviously."

Outside—

Emily Carter was already moving.

Not toward the building.

Around it.

Because rushing in—

Was predictable.

And predictable—

Got you killed.

Her phone buzzed.

Daniel.

She answered immediately.

"Status," she said.

"Not ideal," Daniel replied.

A hit.

A grunt.

The line didn't cut.

Which made it worse.

Emily's voice dropped.

"How many?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

"They're not stopping," Alexander added.

Emily's eyes narrowed.

Of course they weren't.

"They're not here to kill fast," she said.

A pause.

"They're here to break you first."

Silence.

Because that—

Was worse.

💬 Would you try to escape… or fight until the end?

Inside—

The fight escalated.

One attacker—

Then two—

Then three.

They didn't rush.

They rotated.

One engaging.

Two watching.

Learning.

"They're adapting," Daniel said.

Alexander laughed softly.

"Good," he said.

A pause.

"Let's make it harder."

Daniel moved first this time.

Not reactive.

Aggressive.

He closed distance—

Faster.

Unpredictable.

One attacker miscalculated.

Just slightly.

It was enough.

He went down.

But the others—

Didn't hesitate.

Didn't panic.

They adjusted.

Across the system—

The countdown changed.

Not for Alexander.

For Daniel.

01:30

Emily saw it.

Her expression hardened.

"They accelerated it," she said.

Because they could.

Because they controlled the rules.

Her car stopped two blocks away.

She stepped out.

Didn't run.

Walked.

Controlled.

Because panic—

Was predictable.

Inside—

Daniel felt it.

The pressure shifting.

Time closing in.

"Something changed," he said.

Alexander nodded.

"They're done playing," he replied.

Another strike—

Faster now.

More direct.

Daniel blocked—

But this time—

He felt it.

The difference.

They weren't testing anymore.

They were ending it.

💬 Do you think Daniel can survive this… or is this the end?

Outside—

Emily reached the building entrance.

Locked.

Of course.

She didn't hesitate.

Pulled out her phone.

Typed one command.

Inside—

The emergency system flickered.

Just for a second.

Then—

A door unlocked.

Alexander saw it.

"Exit," he said.

Daniel didn't move.

"Go," Alexander added.

Silence.

Because now—

It was a choice.

Leave—

Or finish it.

Daniel looked at the attackers.

Then at the door.

Then—

Made his decision.

He didn't run.

He moved forward.

"That's stupid," Alexander muttered.

Daniel's voice was calm.

"No," he said.

A pause.

"It's necessary."

That word again.

And for a moment—

Alexander almost smiled.

Because now—

They understood each other.

Outside—

Emily stepped into the building.

Alone.

Her eyes scanned everything.

Dark.

Silent.

But not empty.

She whispered softly—

"Let's end this."

Inside—

The final seconds ticked down.

00:21

The attackers moved together now.

No hesitation.

No testing.

Daniel stepped forward.

Ready.

Focused.

And just before impact—

The lights came back.

Blinding.

Everything stopped.

Just for a second.

And in that second—

Everything changed.

Because now—

They could finally see each other.

And what Daniel saw—

Was worse than anything he expected.

They weren't just trained.

They were identical.

No emotion.

No hesitation.

No identity.

Not people.

Assets.

The countdown hit zero.

And the system responded.

"Evaluation Complete."

Silence.

Because this—

Was never about survival.

It was about measurement.

And Daniel Hayes—

Had just been measured.

💬 Was Daniel right to stay and fight… or should he have escaped?

And what exactly are these "assets"?
