Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Ones Who Are Left Behind

The bell did not echo this time.

It exploded.

KRRRIIINNGGG—

The sound ripped through the air at point-blank range, so loud Andi felt it inside his skull, like something had struck directly against his thoughts.

He staggered.

His grip on the door faltered.

"What—what is that?!" he shouted, his voice barely audible over the ringing.

Rina didn't answer.

She didn't even flinch.

She just stood there—

Facing the approaching mass.

Waiting.

The moment stretched.

Everything slowed.

The creatures—

All of them—

Stopped.

Mid-motion.

Mid-step.

Mid-lunge.

Frozen.

Andi blinked, disoriented.

"…Rina?"

His ears rang violently, the sound of the bell still vibrating through him. The world felt distant, muffled, like he had been dropped underwater.

"Don't move," Rina said quietly.

Not urgent.

Not panicked.

Certain.

"…again?" Andi muttered weakly.

But he obeyed.

Because right now—

It was the only thing that had kept him alive.

The things in front of them—

Didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Didn't exist.

Not fully.

They looked like broken frames of something paused mid-action—unnatural, incomplete.

One of them—

Right in front of Andi—

Was reaching toward him.

Fingers stretched.

Just inches away.

Frozen.

Andi's breath trembled.

"…they stopped."

Rina nodded once.

"This is the window."

Before he could ask what that meant—

The door behind them clicked.

Both of them froze.

Then slowly—

Very slowly—

The massive doors creaked open.

Not fully.

Just enough.

A narrow gap.

Darkness beyond.

Andi stared at it.

"…that's it?" he whispered.

Rina didn't respond.

Her eyes were fixed on the opening.

Calculating.

Measuring.

"…we go through that?" Andi asked.

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Something about the way she said it—

Made his stomach twist.

"Together," he added quickly.

Rina didn't look at him.

"…Andi."

His chest tightened.

"No."

She exhaled slowly.

Like someone preparing to say something they had already accepted.

"Listen carefully," she said.

"I am listening."

"Not all of us can leave."

The words hit harder than anything before.

Andi stared at her.

"…what?"

Rina finally turned to face him.

And for the first time—

There was no distance in her expression.

No cold calculation.

Just something quiet.

Something tired.

"I told you," she said softly. "The second bell… chooses."

Andi shook his head immediately.

"No. No, that's not happening."

"It already is."

"Then we both go. Simple."

"It's not."

"Why not?!"

Rina didn't answer right away.

Instead—

She glanced at the frozen figures around them.

Then back at him.

"You're still… new," she said.

Andi frowned.

"…what does that have to do with anything?"

Her gaze lingered.

"…you still belong out there."

Something about that—

Felt wrong.

Deeply wrong.

"And you don't?" he asked.

Silence.

That was answer enough.

"No," Andi said firmly. "I'm not leaving you here."

Rina almost smiled.

Almost.

"You don't get to decide that."

"Then who does?!"

The bell pulsed again.

Not a full ring.

Just a vibration.

A reminder.

Time was running out.

Rina stepped closer to him.

Close enough that he could see the details he had missed before.

The faint discoloration beneath her skin.

The way her eyes didn't quite reflect the light properly.

The subtle delay in her movements—

Barely noticeable.

But there.

"I've tried," she said quietly.

Andi froze.

"…what?"

"Leaving," she continued. "More times than I can count."

Her voice didn't break.

Didn't shake.

That made it worse.

"And?" he asked.

Rina looked past him.

At the gap in the door.

"…I'm still here."

Something inside Andi tightened.

"No," he said again. "There has to be a way."

"There isn't."

"There is!"

The frozen figure in front of him—

Twitched.

Just slightly.

Rina's eyes snapped toward it.

"Time's up," she said sharply.

The bell rang again.

Short.

Violent.

KRRRIIINNG—

Everything moved.

The creatures surged forward all at once.

The silence shattered into chaos.

"GO!" Rina shouted.

Andi didn't move.

Not yet.

"GO!" she screamed again, grabbing his arm and shoving him toward the door.

He stumbled forward.

The gap—

Right there.

So close.

But he stopped.

Turned.

"…Rina!"

She was already stepping back.

Away from him.

Toward them.

"No!" Andi shouted.

Something lunged past him.

Fast.

Too fast.

Rina moved.

Intercepted.

Andi's breath caught.

"…what are you doing?!"

Rina didn't look at him.

Her voice came out steady.

Final.

"Buying you time."

"No—no, that's not—!"

Another creature rushed toward her.

She stepped into its path.

Deliberately.

Andi felt something inside him crack.

"You said not all of us can leave," he shouted, his voice breaking. "That doesn't mean it has to be YOU!"

For a moment—

Just a moment—

Rina hesitated.

Then she looked back at him.

And this time—

She smiled.

Not cold.

Not empty.

Human.

"It was always going to be me."

Something grabbed her arm.

Hard.

Pulling.

Andi took a step forward.

"No—!"

"DON'T!" she snapped.

He froze.

"If you come back now…" she said, her voice sharp despite everything, "…you lose your chance."

The door behind him creaked wider.

The gap expanding.

Light—

Faint, distant, but real—

Seeping through.

"…I'm not leaving you," he said.

Rina shook her head.

"…you already are."

More of them closed in.

Surrounding her.

Blocking her from view.

"Rina—!"

Her voice came one last time.

Soft.

Almost lost in the chaos.

"Don't… come back…"

And then—

She was gone.

Something slammed into Andi from behind.

The force knocked him forward—

Through the door.

He stumbled.

Fell.

Hit the ground hard.

The door behind him—

Slammed shut.

Silence.

No whispers.

No dragging.

No breathing that wasn't his own.

Just wind.

Soft.

Real.

Andi lay there, unmoving.

His chest rose and fell rapidly, his lungs burning as if he had just surfaced from deep underwater.

Slowly—

He pushed himself up.

The sky above him was the same pale amber as before.

The school yard—

Normal.

Quiet.

Empty.

He turned.

The gate stood behind him.

Closed.

Still.

Ordinary.

"…Rina…?" he whispered.

No answer.

No sound.

Nothing.

Andi's hands trembled.

But this time—

Not from fear.

From something else.

Something heavier.

Something quieter.

He swallowed hard.

"…I made it out," he said.

The words felt wrong.

Because it didn't feel like surviving.

It felt like losing.
