Chapter 48: The Pride You Gave
While the two were chatting, Bei Wei walked over in small steps and personally brought them some velvet cake.
"Brother Zhang, Brother Xiang, come have some."
Zhang Yang looked up and saw Bei Wei secretly wink at him.
Xiang Youde quickly stood up and thanked her repeatedly, showering praise non-stop, directly praising this so-called mysterious boyfriend to the heavens.
Zhang Yang felt slightly embarrassed listening to it.
If you don't know how to praise someone, then don't force it. He wasn't a thin-skinned person, but Xiang Youde's inexplicable flattery still made him feel a bit awkward.
The portion of afternoon tea was quite generous, enough for everyone to share. Although none of the colleagues had ever met Bei Wei's mysterious boyfriend, every one of them praised him endlessly.
"Bei Wei's boyfriend is so thoughtful, so nice!"
"If I had a boyfriend like that, I'd probably wake up laughing from my dreams!"
"Bei Wei, thank your boyfriend for us. If there's a chance, bring him out so we can meet him."
The chorus of praise around her made Bei Wei feel like she was immersed in an ocean of happiness. She smiled softly and secretly lowered her head to send Zhang Yang a message.
"Hey, mysterious boyfriend, how do you feel?"
"Feels like I've created a perfect rival for myself," Zhang Yang laughed silently. Yes, competing with myself-this feeling is really quite strange.
At five-thirty in the evening, Zhang Yang clocked out right on time. Not long after, he saw Bei Wei leaving work as well.
"Brother Zhang." She affectionately hooked her arm through Zhang Yang's and walked briskly beside him.
It was obvious that she had almost fully recovered.
That evening, outside Bei Wei's apartment, Zhang Yang saw Gu Jiani again.
"Um… please come in." Inside the doorway, Gu Jiani invited him in with a slightly unnatural expression.
"Brother Zhang." Bei Wei broke the awkwardness and pulled Zhang Yang inside.
Gu Jiani came from a well-off family and had been cherished by her family since childhood. Naturally, she had some pride. Even the occasional hint of coquettishness she showed was usually only directed toward her close friend Bei Wei.
So inside the apartment, she could only awkwardly invite Zhang Yang to sit down. She wasn't very good at making small talk or polite conversation.
"Y-you sit first. I'll go cook."
A moment later, Zhang Yang saw Gu Jiani enter the kitchen, looking somewhat lost as she glanced around.
Bei Wei had just taken some washed green grapes from the refrigerator and even popped one into Zhang Yang's mouth.
"Does your roommate really know how to cook?" Zhang Yang asked suspiciously.
"She… probably does." Bei Wei smiled awkwardly, as if she knew the truth about her own family.
While the two were talking, a sudden scream came from the kitchen.
Zhang Yang stood up and walked in to take a look. The oil in the pan was crackling loudly-it was obvious that the water hadn't completely evaporated before the oil was added.
"What dish were you trying to make?" Zhang Yang asked as he turned off the stove.
"Tomato… tomato scrambled eggs," Gu Jiani stammered.
The prepared ingredients beside her were actually arranged quite well, but when it came to cooking, she was completely lost.
"Go out." Zhang Yang glanced toward the kitchen door, clearly trying to send her away.
"Huh?" Gu Jiani froze.
"I'm saying you go out and let me cook. Do you want all three of us to go hungry tonight?" Zhang Yang waved his hand and practically pushed Gu Jiani halfway out of the kitchen.
Cooking was really a piece of cake for Zhang Yang.
After all, Zhang Zhaohai was a chef, and Zhang Yang had essentially learned from his father. He might not have extremely refined culinary skills, but everyday home-cooked dishes were second nature to him.
Outside the kitchen, Gu Jiani stared blankly at Zhang Yang cooking with smooth, effortless movements. A strong sense of shock suddenly surged through her mind.
He drove a Bentley and spent money lavishly, yet he could also cook excellent dishes in the kitchen.
In her mind, she suddenly recalled many years ago. Back then, her businessman father was often away from home socializing, but whenever he returned, he would always make time to personally cook a lavish meal.
"Dad?" she murmured unconsciously while watching Zhang Yang.
Beside her, Bei Wei widened her eyes in disbelief while looking at Gu Jiani, not understanding what had gotten into her. Why was she suddenly calling her boyfriend 'dad'?
How could that be acceptable?
Evening deepened as night fell.
Inside the apartment, the lights were bright as one home-style dish after another was brought to the table.
Tomato scrambled eggs, braised prawns, dry-fried cauliflower, pork rib and winter melon soup, stir-fried wild rice stems…
Gu Jiani was usually a master of ordering takeout and also a regular customer at various high-end restaurants. But when she thought about it carefully, it had been a very long time since she had eaten such warm, homely dishes.
"Go ahead and start eating." Zhang Yang washed his hands and sat down.
"Brother Zhang, I love you to death." Bei Wei stepped forward, hugged Zhang Yang, and planted a loud kiss on his cheek without any hesitation.
The pride and surprise Zhang Yang gave her truly appeared everywhere.
On a certain level, no matter what kind of girl it is, they all care about pride and face in various ways.
During dinner, Gu Jiani held her chopsticks, taking a bite here and a bite there, feeling that every dish was unbelievably delicious.
She nearly swallowed her tongue.
These warm home-style dishes were indeed very friendly to the stomach.
Only after finishing the meal did she belatedly react.
"Um… I'll go wash the dishes."
Soon after, Gu Jiani could be seen clumsily busying herself in the kitchen. As for the main purpose of today's visit, Gu Jiani didn't bring it up, and Zhang Yang naturally didn't mention it either.
After dinner, Zhang Yang showed no intention of leaving. Gu Jiani seemed to realize what Zhang Yang intended-he planned to stay the night.
After hesitating for a while, she returned to her room, consciously closed the door, and chose to silently accept it.
"Brother Zhang, come to my room."
Bei Wei pulled Zhang Yang's hand and led him into her room.
Once the door closed, the inside and outside were instantly separated.
"How's the soundproofing in this room?" Zhang Yang hadn't properly looked around the room the last time he came, so he now took the chance to examine it.
"Brother Zhang, you can't mess around." Bei Wei hugged him and scolded him softly, then gave him a long passionate kiss. "Next time, can we go out instead?"
His hands rested on her soft waist, feeling the endless tenderness and affection from the sweet girl. Zhang Yang nodded and lowered his head to kiss her.
"Alright, no messing around."
As night deepened, Bei Wei went to take a shower first and quietly returned to the room not long after.
"Jiani should have showered already. I checked and there's no movement next door. Later you can quietly go wash up."
Zhang Yang looked at the time-it was already past ten-and nodded.
After a while longer, there was indeed no sound outside. Beside him, Bei Wei had already changed into her pajamas and slipped into the blankets, fragrant and waiting.
Thinking about getting under the covers with Bei Wei sooner, Zhang Yang didn't want to wait any longer. He simply got up, left the room, and prepared to go take a shower.
