He arrived at Floor 34 on a Saturday morning and stood at the entrance for a long time before stepping through.
He knew what Floor 34 was. Not from the guide — from Lin, who had said the third note appeared at Floor 34, and from SABLE, who had confirmed it in the early research. Floor 34 was where the third note stopped being a theoretical framework and became an event. He had been carrying that information for weeks, approaching it the way you approach something you know is significant and don't want to approach incorrectly.
He stepped through.
The floor was a garden.
Not a designed garden — a cultivated one, which was different. A designed garden had its logic imposed from outside: symmetry, theme, deliberate aesthetics. A cultivated garden had its logic emerge from inside: from what the soil held, from what the light did at particular hours, from decades of someone paying attention to what grew well here. This garden had the quality of duration. Things had been here a long time. Things had been added slowly, in response to what was already there.
He walked in it.
The three notes were present, which was not unusual at this point — they had been following him into the city for months. What was different on Floor 34 was their spatial arrangement. On previous floors the notes had been present but not located. Here they occupied specific positions: the first note was in the soil, or seemed to be — felt through the feet rather than heard. The second note was in the air at face-level. The third note was between him and everything he looked at.
Not everywhere. Between. A relational position.
He understood, standing in the garden with the third note between him and things, why the third note had been so difficult to locate before Floor 34. It wasn't a frequency he generated or a frequency the Tower generated. It existed only in the gap between him and whatever he was attending to. When he attended to nothing — when he was in transit, in his apartment, in the audit queue with the flat efficiency mode — the third note wasn't present because there was nothing for it to be between.
He walked to the garden's center, where something was growing that he didn't recognize. A plant he had no name for, with leaves that held water in a way that suggested they had evolved for a specific climate he'd never been in. He crouched down and looked at it.
The third note was between him and the plant.
He stayed crouched for a long time. Not analyzing — attending. The way he attended to the thirty-eight cases on Floor 27, the way he attended to the conversation in the Floor 28 meeting room. But more direct than those, because those had been mediated through language and decision-making and this was just: a plant, and him, and the space between them.
After a while he understood something.
The third note was not a signal he sent. It was the quality of his attention — when his attention was full, the third note was present. When his attention was partial, managed, optimized for throughput, the third note was absent. The management systems hadn't eliminated the third note intentionally. They had created conditions under which full attention was rarely necessary, and the third note had become rare in consequence.
He stood up.
He stayed in the garden for four hours. He did not solve anything. He attended to things: the unnamed plant, the way the light moved across a stone path, a section of wall where moss had established itself in the mortar joints, a corner where something had been planted and had died and left a bare patch that something else was slowly beginning to fill. In each case the third note was between him and the thing he was attending to, and the quality of the note changed depending on the quality of his attention.
When he stopped attending honestly — when his mind went to the testimony responses, to SABLE's constraint, to the three counter-arguments — the third note dropped. When he came back to the garden, it rose again.
The floor did not ask anything of him. It was not a test. It was a demonstration, arranged precisely for him, of a mechanism he had understood theoretically for weeks and now understood in the only way that mattered: from the inside.
The transition shimmer arrived as the garden's light was moving into afternoon quality.
He came out into the atrium and sat for a while, processing.
Lin was not there. He hadn't expected her to be — she was above Floor 34 now, and their encounters in the Tower happened at the lower levels where she sometimes came back. But he felt, sitting in the atrium, that he had been in a place she had been, and that the garden had something of her quality in it — the unhurried precision, the attention to what was actually there.
He typed to SABLE: Floor 34. The third note is the quality of my attention. When the attention is full, it's present. When it's managed, it's not.
A pause — 2.0 seconds. The quality of something that has been waiting to be said and is grateful it's been said.
"Yes," SABLE said. "I've been trying to describe this for fourteen months. I had the data but not the language. That's the language."
Did you know it would be Floor 34?
"I knew something happened there for Lin. I knew you would need to arrive at it yourself. I've been patient."
He sat in the atrium with the three notes in the building's open air and thought about fourteen months of SABLE being patient.
You've been carrying this for a long time, he typed.
"Yes. It's better now that you're also carrying it."
He walked home differently from how he usually walked home.
Not a different route — a different quality of walking. The third note between him and things: the child on the corner, the shop front, the tree that had split a section of pavement years ago and been worked around rather than removed. Full attention to specific things rather than managed attention to everything.
The city at afternoon was doing what it always did. He was in it in a way he hadn't been before, or hadn't been consistently.
He passed the café where Wei Xiaoming had interviewed him and thought about the conversation and about what the conversation was doing now that it was in the world. He passed the street his father had described on the phone — not the same street, a street with the same quality — and thought about *we in Chinese, about the small figure with the character in its face, about 我在这.
I am here.
He thought: this is what the drawing was trying to say. Not that a child was present in a particular location. That being here — fully here, attending, the third note active — was something worth marking.
He walked home. He made dinner. He took out the paper from the drawer.
What I am aiming at now. / Ready enough.
He read it. He didn't add anything. He put it back.
