Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Battle in the Ancient Alley

The narrow alley was pitch black, saved only by the faint, flickering yellow light from the entrance reflecting off the ancient, moss-covered walls. The air grew unnaturally cold.

Before Van Thien stood four shadow-clad figures. The young girl was still gripped by one of them, their eyes glowing a predatory red in the gloom. The leader let out a raspy, mechanical chuckle.

"Let's see... how you handle the four of us alone."

Van Thien didn't break his silence. His gaze was locked on the trembling girl. She was terrified, tears streaming down her face.

"Big brother... help me...?"

Van Thien's eyes turned ice-cold. "Put her down."

One of the men sneered. "You think you're in a position to give orders?"

Whoosh!

The man on the left lunged with blinding speed, his fist whistling through the air, aimed straight for Van Thien's head.

BOOM.

The punch stopped dead in mid-air. Van Thien had caught the fist with a single hand. A flash of pure shock crossed the man's face.

"What—!?"

CRACK!

With a slight squeeze, Van Thien crushed the man's wrist bones. As the shadow shrieked in pain, Van Thien delivered a sweeping kick.

THUD!

The man was sent flying, slamming into the stone wall with enough force to spider-web the masonry. The remaining three immediately scattered. The one holding the girl narrowed his glowing eyes.

"Stronger than he looks."

Another drew a strange black dagger, its blade pulsing with a faint, crimson light. "You're still outnumbered!"

The three shadows charged simultaneously, their movements blurring into streaks of darkness.

Swish! A blade aimed for his throat.

Whoosh! A kick from behind.

Bam! A punch from the right.

Three lethal strikes at once. Van Thien took a single, fluid step. The blade missed. The kick swept through empty air. He caught the incoming punch mid-flight. Before the attacker could react—

CRASH!

Van Thien slammed him into the pavement, the bricks shattering under the impact. The other two froze.

"Impossible..."

The leader, still holding the girl, snarled, "Enough!"

His red eyes flared brilliantly. Black veins began to throb across his neck, his body twisting and mutating. His voice became a distorted, metallic growl. "Let's see... how long you can last."

He set the girl down behind him and instantly—

ZIP!

He moved twice as fast as before, his fist wreathed in a strange, crimson aura.

BOOM!

The blow connected with Van Thien's forearm. The ground beneath his feet cracked, and the entire alley trembled. The other two laughed triumphantly.

"He got him!"

But as the dust settled, Van Thien remained unmoved. His arm held the massive fist at bay without a single tremor. His gaze was terrifyingly calm.

"Are you finished?"

The shadow froze in terror. "No way..."

Van Thien sighed softly. His cross necklace pulsed with a faint light. "I didn't want to fight here."

He tightened his grip. CRACK. The shadow's arm splintered. Before he could scream, Van Thien delivered a devastating punch to his gut. The shadow's body tore through the wall at the end of the alley in a shower of debris.

The man crawled out from the rubble, hissing. "Fine... then I'll have to use it."

He pulled out a syringe filled with a glowing red liquid and slammed it into his vein. His muscles surged, his body swelling into a monstrous, hulking form. His eyes turned a feral, burning red. He roared and charged.

BOOM!

The impact sent Van Thien flying into a wall. Blood coughed from his mouth. As he struggled to sit up, the monster reached him, grabbing his leg and slamming him repeatedly into the ground like a ragdoll before tossing him aside.

The creature laughed. "What's wrong? Can't handle a real fight?"

Van Thien didn't answer. He slowly stood up, his eyes fixed on the beast. The monster lunged for the finishing blow.

CRASH!

Dust billowed. The monster's grin vanished. Within the haze, Van Thien's hand held the monster's giant fist firm. The cross necklace began to glow with a rhythmic, azure light, pulsing like a heartbeat.

With a surge of strength, Van Thien flipped the giant over, slamming him into the earth.

THOOM!

The monster howled. He tried to retaliate with a flurry of strikes, but Van Thien evaded them with ease. When the final, full-power blow came down, Van Thien blocked it effortlessly. With a resolute gaze, he drove a fist deep into the creature's solar plexus, followed by a devastating kick.

The shadow was propelled back into the far wall, his body becoming limp. The last two henchmen panicked.

"Retreat!"

They turned to flee, but in a blur, Van Thien was already standing in their path. Two lightning-fast strikes followed.

THUD. THUD

Both collapsed. The alley fell back into a heavy silence, broken only by the girl's frantic sobbing. Van Thien walked over and knelt beside her, his voice softening.

"It's okay now."

The girl burst into tears, clinging to him. "It's okay," he whispered, comforting her. "The bad men are gone. Don't be afraid."

As she cried against his shoulder, Van Thien looked back. The bodies of the four shadows began to disintegrate into black, molecular particles, fading into the air until only rubble remained.

He looked up at the night sky of Hanoi, a grim thought crossing his mind:

"Is it finally over... or is this only... the beginning?"
