Chapter 15 - THREE SHADOWS AROUND HER

The moment Min-Joon disappeared from the balcony, the air shifted.

Chairman Min-Jae remained still for a long moment, watching the sliding doors where his son had vanished. Wind tugged at the strands of hair near his temples, but his expression didn't soften.

He finally turned to Lyla.

"Did he frighten you?" he asked softly.

Lyla's heart pounded. "No. He… confused me."

One brow lifted slightly. "He tends to do that."

She expected Min-Jae to dismiss the conversation, but instead, he stepped closer. Slowly. Deliberately. Until the space between them felt too intimate, too warm, too dangerous.

"You're trembling," he murmured.

She stiffened.

His hand hovered near her cheek — not touching, but close enough that she could feel the warmth of it. "You don't need to fear my sons."

The word "sons" felt like a warning.

"Min-Jae…" she whispered, unable to hide the conflict in her voice.

He noticed instantly. "You're overwhelmed."

"I'm fine," she said — but it came out unconvincing.

He lowered his hand, shifting back into that elegant, impenetrable aura.

"Walk with me."

It wasn't a request.

He guided her inside the building and through a private hallway lit with soft gold lights. She followed hesitantly, her dress whispering across the carpet, her heart a drumbeat against her ribs.

He opened a door into a quiet sitting room — luxurious and dimly lit. The noise from the event disappeared as soon as the door shut.

Min-Jae moved to the bar and poured two glasses of water.

"Drink," he said.

She obeyed.

Only after she set the glass down did he finally speak again.

"You handled yourself well tonight."

She blinked. "Handled… what?"

"Pressure," he said simply. "My Board was watching you. My sons were watching you. And you didn't crumble."

Her breath caught.

"I didn't expect anything less."

The compliment struck her harder than she expected. Not flirtatious. Not manipulative. Just… sincere.

"Why are you saying this?" she asked softly.

He stepped closer, and his presence swallowed the room.

"Because," he said quietly, "I need to know what you're capable of."

Her pulse stuttered. "Capable of what?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he raised a hand and gently lifted her chin with one finger, forcing her eyes to meet his.

"Lyla," he murmured, "do you know how difficult it is for someone to get my attention?"

Her breath stopped.

He continued, voice deep, quiet, devastating.

"You have it."

Her knees weakened.

"But the question," he added, "is whether you intend to keep it… or run from it."

Her lips parted, but she couldn't speak.

His gaze dropped to her mouth.

Tension crackled in the room like electricity.

"Chairman—"

A sharp knock interrupted them.

Min-Jae's eyes slid to the door, irritation flickering across his face for the first time all night.

"Come in."

The door opened.

Junho.

His eyes immediately found Lyla.

Then Min-Jae.

Then the distance — or lack of it — between them.

His jaw tightened. "Father. We need to talk."

Min-Jae's gaze cooled instantly. "Not now."

Junho stepped inside, ignoring the warning in his father's voice.

"This is important."

Min-Jae exhaled faintly, turning away from Lyla. "Fine. Speak."

Junho's eyes flicked to her again. "Privately."

"No," Min-Jae said simply. "If it concerns her, she stays."

The challenge landed like a blow.

Junho stiffened, then composed himself.

"Fine." He turned directly to Lyla. "Are you okay?"

The question shook her.

Min-Jae's expression darkened. "Junho—"

"No." Junho cut him off. "She was dragged into the middle of something she didn't ask for. And I can't pretend I didn't see how uncomfortable she looked on the balcony."

Lyla's breath caught.

Min-Jae's eyes sharpened. "If you think I would harm—"

"It's not about harm," Junho snapped. "It's about purpose. Why is she here? Why her?"

Lyla swallowed hard.

Min-Jae's voice turned icy. "My decisions do not require your approval."

"And what about her?" Junho shot back. "Does she get a say?"

Silence.

Min-Jae turned slowly to Lyla.

"Do you wish to leave?" he asked, tone soft but heavy.

Her breath trembled.

If she said yes… everything would collapse. Her father's wrath. The billion-dollar contract. Her fragile safety.

She forced herself to shake her head.

"I'm… okay," she whispered.

Junho closed his eyes — devastated.

Min-Jae nodded, as though he expected nothing less. "Then the matter is settled."

But Junho wasn't done.

"I'm warning you," he said to his father, voice unsteady with anger and something like fear, "if you drag her into your world the wrong way, I won't stand aside."

Min-Jae's expression was unreadable. "You're speaking recklessly."

"No," Junho said. "I'm speaking the truth."

Then he turned to Lyla, voice softening with heartbreaking gentleness.

"If anything happens… if you feel cornered… call me. I'll come."

Min-Jae's eyes flashed.

"Junho."

But Junho didn't look at him.

Only at her.

Then he left, the door slamming quietly behind him.

Silence rushed back into the room.

Min-Jae stared at the door for a long time before speaking.

"You are… important to him," he said carefully.

Lyla's breath caught. "Junho and I… we have a past."

Min-Jae didn't react visibly.

But she felt the shift in the room — the tension, the dangerous calm.

"I see," he said quietly. "That complicates things."

Her stomach twisted. "Chairman—"

"We'll discuss it later," he said. "Not here."

Before she could respond, another knock sounded.

This time Min-Jae sighed. "Come."

The door opened.

Min-Joon entered, hands in pockets, expression unreadable.

He walked forward slowly, eyes shifting between Min-Jae and Lyla.

"Everyone seems tense," he remarked lightly.

No one spoke.

Min-Joon's gaze lingered on Lyla's slightly shaken expression.

"Did my brother disrupt something?" he asked.

Min-Jae's jaw tightened. "It doesn't concern you."

Min-Joon hummed. "Everything concerns me."

He leaned against the edge of the bar, fingers tapping lightly, rhythmically.

I have a question," he said. "Who exactly is she to our family?"

Min-Jae's eyes narrowed slightly. "That is not your concern."

Min-Joon smiled faintly. "Father, when you bring a beautiful woman to a closed-door event and hold secret meetings with her… it becomes everyone's concern."

Lyla tensed.

Min-Jae's voice dropped. "Watch your tone."

Min-Joon raised a hand in mock surrender. "I'm only asking. You've never acted this way over anyone."

Min-Jae didn't answer.

Min-Joon's smile deepened. "Interesting."

The air thickened.

Then his focus shifted to Lyla, and she felt pinned in place.

"You should go home," Min-Joon said quietly.

She blinked. "Why?"

He gave a calm, knowing smile. "Because the night won't get easier."

Min-Jae's eyes hardened. "You are not dismissed, Lyla."

Min-Joon looked at his father. "You're keeping her here for a reason. But whatever the reason is… it won't end well."

Lyla's breath hitched.

"Leave," Min-Jae said, voice sharp.

But Min-Joon didn't move.

Instead, he stepped closer to Lyla, lowering his voice.

"If you stay here tonight," he murmured, "you'll be stepping into a world you're not prepared for."

Her pulse quickened.

He turned slightly, addressing Min-Jae without looking at him.

"And Father knows that."

Min-Jae's expression darkened, tension rolling off him like a storm.

Min-Joon straightened.

"I'll take my leave," he said calmly. "But Lyla…"

She looked up.

He held her gaze.

"When you're ready to understand what's really happening… come find me."

Then he left.

The door clicked shut

Silence.

Chairman Min-Jae exhaled slowly, finally turning fully toward Lyla.

"You must be wondering," he said softly, "why they're behaving this way."

She shook her head weakly. "I don't understand anything anymore."

He walked toward her — not fast, but with the quiet authority of a man who owned every room he stepped into.

When he stopped in front of her, she felt the full weight of his presence.

"You don't need to understand," he said gently. "You just need to trust me."

Her throat tightened. "Can I?"

He didn't speak for a long moment.

Then—

"You will learn."

He lifted her hand — slowly, deliberately — and pressed it to his chest.

The warmth of him.

The steady beat of his heart.

The closeness.

The intensity.

It was almost overwhelming.

"Stay close to me," he murmured. "No matter what they tell you."

Lyla's breath shook. "Why?"

His voice lowered.

"Because you're already mine."

Her pulse exploded.

But before she could respond — before she could run or breathe or deny — the door burst open again.

"Lyla!"

She turned.

Junho.

Standing there.

Breathless.

And behind him—

Min-Joon.

Expression unreadable.

The three men stared at her.

And Lyla realized—

Her life was no longer her own.

She was standing at the center of three shadows.

Three desires.

Three dangers.

And this was only the beginning.
