Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12: WHAT YOU CAN’T HIDE .

Heaven had grown quieter.

But not in a peaceful way.

It was the kind of silence that came before something broke.

Lin Mo could feel it.

Every step he took through the celestial halls felt heavier than before, as if the light itself had begun to weigh him down.

"…You didn't rest."

The voice came softly from behind him.

Lin Mo didn't need to turn.

"I'm fine."

A small sigh followed.

"…You always say that."

He turned this time.

She stood there again.

The same calm expression.

The same sharp eyes that seemed to see too much.

"You should stop saying it," she added quietly.

"…Why?"

"Because it's not true."

Silence.

Lin Mo didn't argue.

Because

He couldn't.

She stepped closer this time.

Not too close.

But closer than before.

"…You've been avoiding me."

"I haven't."

"You have."

A pause.

"…Ever since that day."

Lin Mo's gaze shifted slightly.

"…You noticed."

"…Of course I did."

Her voice softened just a little.

"…You're not as unreadable as you think."

Silence.

Her eyes moved briefly,

To his hand.

Then back to his face.

"…He touched you there, didn't he?"

Lin Mo froze.

"…I don't know what you mean."

But the answer came too quickly.

Too carefully.

She smiled faintly.

"…You really are bad at lying."

Lin Mo said nothing.

Because

There was nothing he could say.

"…It wasn't just a demon, was it?"

The question lingered.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

Lin Mo's fingers curled slightly.

"…Be careful what you're implying."

Her gaze didn't waver.

"…I'm not implying anything."

A pause.

"…I'm asking."

Silence.

Long.

Heavy.

Lin Mo turned away.

"…It doesn't concern you."

For a moment

She didn't respond.

Then

"…It does."

That made him pause.

"…Why?"

A faint smile appeared on her lips again.

"…Because I care."

Lin Mo stilled.

"…About Heaven?"

"…About you."

Silence.

The words settled between them.

Uncomfortable.

Unexpected.

Lin Mo didn't know how to respond.

Because

He hadn't expected that.

"…You shouldn't."

The answer came quieter this time.

But it didn't push her away.

Not completely.

"…And you shouldn't be meeting demons," she replied just as softly.

Lin Mo's breath caught slightly.

"…You're assuming too much."

"…Am I?"

A pause.

"…Then prove me wrong."

Silence.

He couldn't.

And she knew it.

Her gaze softened slightly.

"…You've changed, Lin Mo."

The words came gently.

"…And whatever is causing it…"

She stepped closer again.

"…It's dangerous."

Before he could respond

A sudden shift in the air.

Sharp.

Familiar.

Lin Mo's expression changed instantly.

She noticed.

"…What is it?"

He didn't answer.

Because

He already knew.

That presence.

That feeling.

Too close.

Too strong.

"…Stay here," Lin Mo said suddenly.

"What"

But before she could finish,

He was gone.

The lower realm was quiet.

Too quiet.

Lin Mo landed lightly, his gaze scanning the area.

"…You came."

The voice came from the shadows.

Low.

Familiar.

Lin Mo didn't turn immediately.

"…You shouldn't have called me here."

A soft chuckle followed.

"…And yet you still came."

Silence.

Then

Mo Ran stepped forward.

This time,

There was no distance.

No hesitation.

He closed the space between them instantly.

"…You took your time."

Lin Mo frowned slightly.

"…I didn't come for you."

Mo Ran's eyes darkened.

"…Liar."

The word came out softly.

But it carried weight.

Lin Mo didn't respond.

Because

Part of it was true.

Mo Ran's gaze lingered on him.

Carefully.

"…You were with someone."

Lin Mo stilled.

"…That's none of your concern."

A pause.

Then,

Mo Ran stepped closer.

Even closer than before.

"…It is."

His voice dropped.

"…When they stand that close to you."

Lin Mo's breath caught slightly.

"…You're overstepping."

"…And you're letting them."

Silence.

Mo Ran's hand moved suddenly,

Grabbing Lin Mo's wrist again.

The same place.

The same way.

"…You didn't pull away."

Lin Mo froze.

"…You were watching?"

"…I always am."

The answer came without hesitation.

Without shame.

Lin Mo's heart skipped.

"…That's not normal."

Mo Ran leaned closer.

"…Neither is this."

The words were quiet.

But the meaning wasn't.

Lin Mo didn't move.

Didn't pull away.

Didn't stop him.

And that,

That was enough.

Mo Ran's grip tightened slightly.

"…You're changing."

"…So are you."

A pause.

Mo Ran's gaze dropped

Just for a moment

Then returned.

"…Stay away from her."

Lin Mo blinked.

"…What?"

"…You heard me."

Silence.

"…You don't get to decide that."

Mo Ran's expression darkened.

"…Then stop giving me a reason to."

The tension snapped.

Sharp.

Unavoidable.

Lin Mo pulled his hand back this time.

Not harshly.

But enough.

"…You're crossing a line."

Silence.

Mo Ran stilled.

For a moment

Something unreadable flickered in his eyes.

Then

"…And you're pretending there isn't one."

The words came quieter this time.

But they cut deeper.

Lin Mo didn't answer.

Because

He couldn't.

The distance between them returned.

But it didn't feel real.

Because everything else,

Still remained.

"…Go back," Lin Mo said finally.

"…Before it gets worse."

Mo Ran didn't move.

"…It already has."

Silence.

Then,

Slowly,

He stepped back.

The shadows wrapped around him again.

"…Next time…"

His voice lowered.

"…Don't let anyone stand that close to you."

Lin Mo's breath caught.

"…You don't get to say that."

Mo Ran almost smiled.

"…Watch me."

And then,

He was gone.

Leaving behind silence

And something else

Something heavier than before.
