Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: It's Devour or Be Devoured

The roar shook the crater.

It wasn't just loud—

It was heavy.

Like the sound itself carried weight, pressing down on Kael's body, forcing the air from his lungs.

Dust and fragments of stone trembled around them as the creature fully rose from the core.

It had no fixed shape.

That was the first thing Kael noticed.

Its body shifted constantly—

A mass of dark energy and hardened fragments, twisting into something vaguely humanoid, then breaking apart, then reforming again.

Its limbs extended and retracted unnaturally.

Its torso pulsed in sync with the massive core behind it.

"…So it's not just guarding it…"

Kael muttered.

"…It's part of it."

The girl beside him didn't respond immediately.

Her gaze remained locked on the creature.

"…A manifestation," she said finally.

"…A defense mechanism."

The creature's head turned.

Slowly.

Until its gaze—

Or whatever passed for eyes—

Landed directly on Kael.

A pulse of energy surged outward.

Kael's body tensed instantly.

"…It's targeting me."

"Of course it is."

The girl's voice was calm.

"…You're the bigger threat."

Kael let out a short breath.

"…Good."

The creature moved.

Not like a normal being.

It didn't step—

It surged.

Forward.

Like a wave crashing toward them.

"Move," the girl said.

Kael already had.

He dashed to the side—

Just as the creature slammed into where he had been standing.

The ground exploded.

Stone shattered.

A deep crater formed instantly.

"…That would've killed me."

"No," she replied calmly.

"…It would've erased you."

Kael's eyes sharpened.

No room for error.

Not even once.

The creature shifted again.

Its arm extended—

Stretching unnaturally—

And lashed out.

Kael ducked—

But the tip grazed his shoulder.

"—!"

Pain exploded.

Not physical—

Something deeper.

Like his energy itself had been torn.

He staggered back.

"…What was that…?"

"…Energy erosion," the girl said.

"…It doesn't just damage your body—it eats your core."

Kael clenched his teeth.

"…Then I can't get hit again."

The creature didn't wait.

It attacked again.

Faster this time.

More aggressive.

Kael activated Core Sense.

Ignoring the sharp pain that followed.

The world shifted.

The creature's form became clearer.

Not physically—

But structurally.

"…There…"

At its center—

A core.

Connected directly to the massive heart behind it.

"…So that's the link…"

If he destroyed that—

He moved.

The creature lunged.

Kael stepped in.

Not away.

Its arm swung—

Kael slid under it—

Closing the distance.

"…Now!"

He drove his sword forward—

But—

The creature's body shifted.

The blade passed through—

But didn't hit anything solid.

"…Damn it!"

The creature retaliated instantly.

A spike formed from its body—

And shot toward him.

Kael barely twisted away—

But it tore through his side.

"—GHK!"

He was thrown back.

Rolling across the ground.

Blood stained the dirt.

Kael coughed.

"…This isn't working…"

The girl watched from above.

Still.

Not interfering.

"…You're approaching it wrong," she said.

Kael forced himself up.

"…Then enlighten me."

"…You're trying to fight it like a normal enemy."

A pause.

"…It's not."

Kael's eyes flickered.

"…Then what is it?"

She looked at the core.

"…It's a system."

Silence.

"…A system that consumes… and evolves."

Kael froze.

"…Like mine…"

Her gaze shifted to him.

"…Exactly."

A chill ran down his spine.

"…Then how do I beat it?"

She smiled faintly.

"…You don't."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…Then why am I here?"

Her smile deepened slightly.

"…You devour it."

Everything went still.

"…What?"

Before she could answer—

The system activated.

[New Condition Triggered]

[Target: Core Entity Detected]

[Option Available: Devour]

Kael's breath caught.

"…Devour…"

[Warning: High Risk]

[Success: Massive Growth]

[Failure: Core Collapse / Death]

"…Of course…"

High risk.

High reward.

That's how it worked.

The creature roared again.

Charging once more.

Kael tightened his grip.

"…If I do this…"

He might survive.

Or—

Lose everything.

His mind flickered.

Memories.

Fading ones.

Lina.

Her smile.

Her voice.

"…I can't afford to hesitate."

He stepped forward.

"…I'll devour it."

[Command Accepted]

The world changed.

The system flared to life.

Energy surged from Kael's body—

Connecting to the creature.

A link formed.

The creature froze.

Then—

It roared violently.

Resisting.

Kael's body trembled.

"…It's fighting back…!"

Pain exploded inside him.

Not external—

Internal.

Like something was tearing through his core.

[Devour Process Initiated]

[Progress: 3%]

"…Too slow…!"

The creature lashed out wildly.

Attacking without pattern.

Without restraint.

Kael dodged—

Barely—

Maintaining the connection.

Each second—

Felt like an eternity.

[Progress: 7%… 12%…]

His vision blurred.

His body weakened.

"…It's taking too much…"

The system responded.

[Warning: Stability Falling]

[Current Stability: 29%]

"…Damn it…"

The creature surged again—

Striking him directly this time.

"—!"

Kael was thrown back.

But the connection—

Didn't break.

[Progress: 18%]

"…I can't stop now…"

He forced himself up.

Blood dripping.

Body shaking.

"…Come on…"

The creature roared—

And charged.

Kael didn't move.

He stood his ground.

"…I'm not running."

The impact came—

But this time—

He endured it.

"AAAAAAHHHH—!"

Pain consumed everything.

But the connection held.

[Progress: 31%… 46%…]

His vision darkened.

Memories flickered—

And vanished.

Something important—

Gone.

"…No…"

His voice trembled.

"…Not that…"

But he couldn't remember what it was.

Only the feeling remained.

Loss.

"…Keep going…"

The creature began to destabilize.

Its form breaking apart.

[Progress: 62%… 78%…]

Kael's body reached its limit.

He dropped to one knee.

"…Almost…"

The girl watched silently.

Her eyes—

Focused.

"…Don't stop now," she whispered.

Kael clenched his teeth.

"…I won't…"

With everything he had left—

He pushed.

"FINISH IT—!"

[Progress: 100%]

Silence.

Then—

Explosion.

Light consumed everything.

Kael's body lifted off the ground—

Engulfed in energy.

The creature—

Gone.

The core—

Cracked.

And then—

Shattered.

Everything went still.

Kael fell.

Hard.

The world faded.

Darkness creeping in.

The last thing he saw—

Was her.

Standing above him.

Watching.

"…You survived…"

Her voice was soft.

"…Barely."

Kael's vision faded.

But before everything went black—

One final notification appeared.

[Devour Complete]

[Core Evolution Initiated]

And then—

Nothing.
