Chapter 3 - City of Watching Shadows

The city loomed like a nightmare carved from shadows.

Black towers pierced the violet sky, their edges jagged like broken blades frozen mid-strike. Nothing about them felt built—only grown. Twisted.

Faint lights flickered within the structures.

Not steady.

Not natural.

Like something inside was breathing.

Watching.

Waiting.

"No way we're going in there," John said immediately, his voice tight.

"We have to," Chris replied without hesitation.

Tony didn't argue.

He didn't need to.

The system window hovered faintly in front of him.

[Objective: Reach Ashen City]

"It's not optional," Tony said quietly.

Bruce cracked his neck, eyes locked on the towering skyline.

"Then we stop hesitating."

Emily didn't move at first.

She stared at the city, her expression uneasy.

"It feels… wrong."

Chris nodded once.

"It is wrong."

A pause.

"But it's also our next step."

No one spoke after that.

Because they all understood.

They moved forward.

The closer they got, the more the world changed.

The ground beneath their feet shifted.

From rough stone—

To something smoother.

Darker.

Like streets that had been burned long ago and never recovered.

Strange markings covered the surface.

Thin lines.

Symbols.

Faintly glowing.

Tony slowed slightly, noticing them.

"…these weren't here before."

Chris glanced down. "…no."

Emily whispered, "They look like… paths."

"Or warnings," John added quickly.

Bruce didn't stop walking.

"Either way—we keep moving."

The gates of the city stood ahead.

Massive.

Towering.

And completely open.

Too open.

John frowned. "No guards?"

Bruce smirked slightly.

"Or no need for guards."

That answer didn't help.

They crossed the threshold.

And the moment they did—

Everything changed.

Silence.

Not normal silence.

Not the absence of sound.

This silence pressed against them.

Wrapped around them.

Made even their breathing feel too loud.

Buildings lined the streets.

Tall.

Empty.

Broken windows staring down like hollow eyes.

Dark doorways waiting like open mouths.

Tony felt it again.

That same sensation from before.

Being watched.

Not from one place.

From everywhere.

A faint whisper echoed.

Soft.

Barely there.

Emily grabbed Tony's arm instantly.

"Did you hear that?"

He nodded slowly.

"…yeah."

Chris raised his hand.

"Stay close."

They tightened their formation.

Step by step.

Careful.

Alert.

Then—

Something moved.

A figure appeared at the end of the street.

Standing still.

Facing them.

Human.

Or at least—

It looked human.

Its head tilted slightly.

Too far.

At an unnatural angle.

John called out, hesitant.

"Hey! Are you—"

The figure moved.

In a blink—

It was closer.

Too fast.

Its face twisted.

Skin stretched wrong.

Eyes glowing faintly from within.

"Not human," Bruce said coldly.

The figure lunged.

Everything exploded into motion.

Tony reacted first.

Sprint activated instantly.

His body moved faster than before—cleaner, sharper.

Chris stepped in, coordinating.

"Left side—watch the angle!"

Emily stayed back, focused.

"Behind you!"

John barely dodged the attack.

"…okay yeah DEFINITELY not human—"

Bruce met it head-on.

One strike.

Clean.

Powerful.

The figure collapsed.

Silence returned.

Brief.

Fragile.

Then—

More appeared.

From the alleys.

From rooftops.

From the shadows themselves.

"They're everywhere!" Emily shouted.

Tony's system flickered.

[Wave Event Triggered]

John stared. "Wave…?"

Chris answered instantly.

"Means more are coming."

And they did.

The next wave hit harder.

Faster.

Smarter.

But this time—

They were ready.

Tony moved with precision.

Not just reacting—anticipating.

Chris directed their flow.

Keeping them together.

Keeping them alive.

Emily tracked movement.

Warning them seconds before danger struck.

John adapted.

Less panic.

More action.

And Bruce—

Broke through everything in front of him.

The fight didn't stop.

One wave became another.

Then another.

Time blurred.

Movements sharpened.

Instincts took over.

They were changing.

Not just surviving.

Evolving.

Finally—

The last figure fell.

Silence returned.

Heavier this time.

Tony leaned against a wall, breathing hard.

"We can't keep doing this forever."

Chris nodded.

"We don't."

A pause.

"We find a base."

Bruce looked ahead.

"…there."

At the center of the city—

A massive structure rose above everything else.

A tower.

Unlike the others.

It wasn't broken.

It wasn't dead.

It pulsed.

Faint light moving through it like veins.

"Yeah…" Tony said quietly.

"That's not normal."

"That's our target," Bruce replied.

They moved again.

Slower now.

More careful.

The closer they got—

The colder the air became.

The streets grew quieter.

Even the whispers faded.

Like something deeper inside the city—

Didn't need them anymore.

The tower stood before them.

Massive.

Silent.

Waiting.

And then—

The doors opened.

On their own.

A cold wind rushed out.

Sharp.

Unnatural.

Inviting.

Or warning.

Tony stopped for a second.

His system flickered again.

[Dungeon Discovered: Tower of Echoes]

Chris exhaled slowly.

"This city… it's a trap."

Bruce stepped forward anyway.

"Then we break it."

Emily whispered,

"…or it breaks us."

Tony looked at them.

His team.

Still standing.

Still moving forward.

Then he looked at the tower.

And stepped inside.

The others followed.

The moment they crossed the entrance—

The doors slammed shut behind them.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Not dim light.

Not shadows.

Complete darkness.

Then—

A sound.

A voice.

Soft.

Cold.

"You've finally arrived."

Tony froze.

His heart stopped for a split second.

Because that voice—

Didn't come from outside.

It came from inside his head.

And it wasn't alone.

Another whisper followed.

Fainter.

Closer.

"…you're late."

Tony's breath hitched.

Because this time—

He recognized it.

It sounded like him.
