Chapter 9 - Chapter: 09 Hard Working Mom's

*As the days passed, Echo learned quickly that caring for a newborn Pokémon was far more challenging than she had anticipated. The Ralts—still unnamed—cried frequently, her small voice piercing through the cave. with high-pitched whimpers that echoed off the stone walls and out through the cave and into the night of the forest. Echo tried everything she could think of: she rocked the tiny Pokémon gently in her arms, she offered food and drink, she sang soft lullabies, she even tried to mimic the gentle vibrations she had heard from other Pokémon mothers in passing.*

*But nothing seemed to soothe the crying.*

*One particularly difficult evening, exhausted and frustrated, Echo found herself holding the wailing Ralts against her chest, trying to hum a melody she remembered from her past. But the little one only cried louder. In desperation, she tried to feed her again, the Ralts's took the food in her mouth....only to spit it back out in Echo's metal face the makeshift milk.*

*The mechanical Pokémon paused, feeling the sweet, musky liquid slide down her cheek. She looked down at the Ralts, who was still crying, and something clicked in her mind she wiped the makeshift milk off her metal face withher hand.*

"Wait…" *Echo said softly, her voice barely a whisper.* "What am I doing wrong? I'm trying to be a mother, but I don't know if I'm doing it right…"

*She sat down on the moss bed, still cradling the crying Ralts. Her mechanical chest seemed to sink slightly, the weight of exhaustion and doubt settling on her shoulders. Her glowing eyes dimmed for a moment as she struggled with the overwhelming feelings.*

*But then she looked at the Ralts's face—those gentle red eyes, now red-rimmed from crying, the soft green hair matted from the day's activities—and her resolve hardened. She didn't know everything, but she would learn. She would figure this out.*

*Standing up, she began to rock back and forth gently, her mechanical arms supporting the tiny Pokémon's weight. As she moved, she started to hum again, but this time with more conviction, with more love behind it.*

*A soft, wordless melody filled the cave—not the same as before, but something deeper, something that came from her heart. The Ralts's crying began to slow. Then stop. The tiny Pokémon looked up at her mechanical mother, its large red eyes focusing on Echo's face with curious wonder.*

*Echo's heart swelled with emotion. She wasn't perfect at this, but she was trying. And maybe that was enough.*

*She continued to rock gently, humming her sweet tune, her metal fingers stroking the Ralts's soft green hair. The small Pokémon made a small contented sound, its body relaxing against Echo's chest.*

"I love you," *Echo whispered, her voice thick with emotion.* "No matter what, I will always love you and take care of you. We'll get through this together, little one."

*The Ralts's eyes began to close, exhaustion finally taking over. It had been a hard day for both of them, but as the baby Pokémon drifted off to sleep in Echo's arms, the mechanical mother felt a warmth spread through her chest—a feeling she had never experienced before. It was worth it. Every difficult moment, every challenge, every mistake and frustration—it was all worth it for this small, fragile life that had chosen to come into the world through her care.*

*Echo carefully placed the sleeping Ralts in the soft moss nest and warm, tucking the small Pokémon in gently. She sat beside the nest, watching over her child, her glowing eyes soft with maternal devotion.*

"Tomorrow," *she promised quietly,* "we'll try again. And the next day too. Until you're strong and healthy and happy. That's what mothers do, right? They never give up?"

*She settled herself nearby, her mechanical body entering a light sleep mode, but keeping one eye open to watch over her precious daughter through the night.*

*five minutes later after the Ralts had finally settled into sleep, a soft rustling sound came from the entrance of the cave. Echo's glowing eyes snapped open immediately, her mechanical head turning toward the sound with alert precision.*

*The mechanical Pokémon quickly glanced at the sleeping Ralts, then back at the cave entrance. Her body tensed, ready to react to whatever was approaching. The sound was subtle—too subtle to be a large Pokémon—but she knew better than to assume anything was safe.*

*She rose to her feet silently, her metal feet making barely a whisper against the stone floor as she moved toward the entrance. Her hands were ready, positioned to either protect her daughter or defend her territory, depending on what emerged.*

*As she reached the cave entrance, Echo's sensors activated automatically, scanning the area outside. The Hoenn forest at night was a dangerous place, filled with Pokémon and other creatures that might not recognize her protective instincts. Her magenta eyes reflected the dim moonlight filtering through the canopy above.*

*Then she saw it—a small figure moving through the underbrush. The shape was familiar, but not threatening. Echo's posture relaxed slightly, though her vigilance remained high.*

*"Lopunny," she muttered quietly, recognizing the rabbit Pokémon's distinctive form. Lopunny she had known this particular Lopunny for a while now after all she had saved this Lopunny from a pack of Mightyena a long time ago, she had been visiting her territory more frequently than lately, probably drawn by some berries growing nearby.*

*The rabbit Pokémon paused, her large ears twitching as she noticed Echo standing at the cave entrance. Lopunny's eyes widened slightly, and she spoke in a soft, cautious voice:*

"Oh… Echo. I didn't realize you lived here now. I'm sorry if I woke you."

*Echo's expression softened, though she remained protective of her territory and, more importantly, her Ralts.*

"It's alright," *she said gently.* "She's sleeping. Please don't make too much noise."

*Lopunny's long ears perked up with curiosity, she looked behind Echo and sees the small Ralts sleeping she then hopped a bit closer, to Echo voice dropping to a whisper.*

"She? You have children? That's wonderful! How old is she?"

*Echo's glowing magenta eyes brightened with maternal pride at the question, though she noticed Lopunny's surprise at the idea of her—a mechanical Pokémon—having children.*

"She's about four days old," *Echo said softly, her voice filled with barely contained affection.* "She hatched just a few days ago. I found her egg and… well, I've been taking care of her ever since."

*She paused, then added with quiet emphasis,* "I'm her mother."

*Lopunny's ears perked up fully, her eyes widening with genuine surprise and wonder. The rabbit Pokémon took a cautious step closer, her curiosity getting the better of her.*

"Really? A mechanical mother?" *Lopunny whispered, her voice tinged with awe.* "That's… that's actually beautiful, Echo. I've never heard of anything like this before."

*The Lopunny's own eyes, which had been warm with surprise, now glowed with a gentler understanding. She glanced toward the cave entrance, clearly wanting to see the baby but respecting Echo's space.*

"May I see her? I promise I'll be quiet. And I'll be very careful not to disturb her."

*Echo considered for a moment, her mechanical hand unconsciously moving to touch her chest where she could still feel the warmth of maternal love. The mechanical Pokémon had spent so long alone, but now she had something worth protecting and sharing.*

*She stepped back slightly, gesturing toward the cave entrance.*

"Just a moment," *she said, her voice gentle but firm.* "She's very small and fragile. You have to be careful."

*Echo turned and padded silently back into the cave, her metal feet making no sound against the stone floor. She approached the moss nest where the Ralts was sleeping, her movements slow and deliberate. The tiny Pokémon was curled up in a small ball, her soft green hair fanned out around her like a blanket, her small chest rising and falling with each breath.*

*Echo carefully lifted the sleeping Ralts, cradling her gently in one arm while her other hand supported the baby's head. The Ralts's large red eyes remained closed, her small body completely relaxed in sleep. Echo could feel the warmth radiating from the tiny Pokémon, and it made her heart feel like it might burst with emotion.*

*She carried the Ralts back to the cave entrance, where Lopunny was waiting patiently, her long ears folded back respectfully. The rabbit Pokémon's eyes went wide as she saw the small creature in Echo's arms.*

"Oh…" *Lopunny breathed, her voice barely audible.* "She's absolutely precious. Look at her… those horns are so tiny and cute!"

*The Lopunny leaned in closer, her own protective instincts kicking in as she carefully studied the baby Ralts. Her voice dropped to an even softer whisper.*

"She's so small. Is she… is she okay? She was born just four days ago, right?"

*Echo nodded, her mechanical voice filled with quiet pride and exhaustion.*

"She's doing well. She cries a lot, and I'm still learning how to take care of her properly, but she's strong. She's fighting to grow and get stronger every day."

*Lopunny's ears twitched with understanding, and she looked between Echo and the tiny Ralts with newfound respect.*

"That's the most important thing," *the rabbit Pokémon said gently.* "You're doing great, Echo. She's lucky to have you."

*As they stood there in the moonlight, two mothers—one mechanical, one natural—shared a moment of connection. Lopunny's presence reminded Echo that she wasn't completely alone in this journey, that other Pokémon cared about what she was doing.*

*Echo carefully shifted the sleeping Ralts in her arms, making sure the baby was comfortable.*

"I should get her back to sleep," *she said softly.* "Thank you for visiting, Lopunny. And… thank you for understanding."

*She gently carried the Ralts back to the moss nest, tucking her in carefully before returning to the cave entrance. Her glowing eyes met Lopunny's once more.*

"If you need anything," *Echo said,* "or if you want to check on her again, please come by. I… I think I could use the company. Raising a child is harder than I thought it would be."

*Lopunny's face softened with empathy and affection.*

"I'd be happy to help however I can," *the rabbit Pokémon said warmly.* "Maybe I could bring some berries for you? You look tired, Echo. Taking care of a baby is exhausting work, no matter what kind of Pokémon—or person—you are."

*With that gentle promise, Lopunny hopped away into the night, leaving Echo alone once more with her precious daughter. The mechanical Pokémon's eyes glowed softly in the darkness, filled with determination and love.*

*She settled herself nearby, ready to watch over her sleeping child through the night, knowing that tomorrow would bring new challenges—but also new joys. She was a mother now, and she would face every day with the fierce devotion and care that role demanded.*

*The Ralts continued to sleep peacefully in her moss nest, completely unaware of the depth of her mother's love, but surrounded by it nonetheless. And in that moment, as the moon cast its gentle glow over the cave entrance, there was something profound and beautiful about this unlikely family—mechanical and natural, mother and child, finding their place in the vast and wondrous world of Hoenn.*
